870 refinish
Got an old 870 that has some rust on it. Want to refinish and want to know what the brain trust thinks od doing a deep cleaning with copper wool degreasing with acetone and then applying a coat of Rustoleum Bar b Que flat black spray paint. Thoughts?? Or should I just pay to have a ceracoat??

I don’t know about the paint or ceracote but For $230 you could send it to Wilson Combat for their “Remington Steal” makeover.

I've done FAL's with the Rust-Oleum grill black.
Works fine. And it's easy to touch up.

Sounds like the perfect solution.

Since you already know how to do the cleaning and degreasing, I would vote for using Brownell's Oxpho-Blue after this. But paint would work just as well.

I would bead blast everything and apply a spray and bake Teflon coating. If you have an oven big enough to take the barrel. But there are other ways to heat the barrel.

Barrel is only 18" but I believe the wife would go postal if I baked a shotgun in her oven....

I’d leave it as is and rub some dirt on it.

I have done several with DuraCoat aerosol in different colors. Like most things in life, end quality is completely dependent on prep detail. I've had excellent luck with it and would recommend it.

Here's a 50+ year old 870 that's currently living it's 3rd or 4th life. It's been my grouse gun, deer gun, waterfowl gun, and now one of my house guns. This is the first gun I DuraCoated, probably 10-15 years ago, and it has held up well. It doesn't get frequent use, but when it comes out it doesn't get babied.

What about parkerizing it? Had a barrel with worn bluing and had it parkerized. Now it matches the receiver.

I’d clean it like you said, then rub it down with oil and call it good. I like “patina”

Lots of good ideas, my vote goes to paint it. Duck hunting in the bayou is hard on a gun and that paint will take a licking and keep on ticking.

I've done a couple of guns with Brownell's Gun Kote and they turned out well and it holds up. Beware that when you put it in the oven, make sure the wife is not home because it stinks up the house. It dissipates fast once you take the gun out of the oven but while it's cooking, it stinks. I have an 870 that I did up a long time ago for training. It's now my house gun. I'll post some photos when I can.

Take a look at Brownell's Aluma Hyde II paint. I did a gun a few years ago and was well pleased with the look, this was a high end rifle and I got the idea when a buddy showed up at my range with his super expensive custom action long range rifle that he had used the Aluma Hyde for the finish.
Your alternate would be a road trip, go east old man, head east to see Cogan at Accurate Plating and Weaponry in scenic Newville, Al. You could tell the wife you are off to LA for a few days. Great work and many different coating, so one would make that old 870 look new again.

That’s the beauty of 870’s, clean it up and it will probably outlive you. Might not be pretty but it”ll still work. They wear like iron.

Black paint worked quite well for the British in WW2 on their Enfield rifles.

To me, Cerakote is magic on guns like that. Never worry about rusting, durable, stands up to just about anything. Can do lots of colors or camouflage patterns. The paints are a nightmare to someone down the road who wants to refinish the gun properly. Getting that old shake and shoot stuff off is a problem. Cerakote not that expensive, I have done dozens of shotguns.

I think the RustOleum would be an excellent finish ...
Would be easy to apply and easy to change ... OD Green or get some brown black tan and green and go Camo .
RustOleum has kept the Gutters and Downspouts on my house rust free for 25 years ... now ( in Louisiana) I'm a believer ...
... that stuff is amazing !
Wait untill the wife is gone for the day ...she'll never know you used the oven !

I've baked on RustOleum paint in the kitchen oven and it works very well.
One hour at 300 degrees and it's ready to use., and quite durable.
Today I'd probably go with something like one of the tougher gun paints like Brownell's Gun Kote.
Just make sure to thoroughly air out the house before she comes home...........
"WHAT is that awful smell"??????
"You did WHAT in MY OVEN"!!!!!!!!!!
(This sounds remarkably like a dull chainsaw hitting a rusty tree spike.)

While I understand where folks are coming from, I am surprised at the unilateral opinions involving paints and coatings.
Doesn't anybody else appreciate a vintage 870 Wingmaster with nice bluing?
I came to the Remington 870 and 1100 through skeet and trap shooting. The Remingtons not only perform great, they look great too, even when compared to the expensive Italian jobs.

If you had Wilson Combat re-do it, you’d have something kind of special.
If you rattle can that thing, you just have another cheap Bubba Gun.
If I was in the market for a used 870, and there was a Wilson or a rattle can, I’d gladly pay more for the Wilson.

Will take my 870 over a Wilson anyday.

Caj, "ifin" I lived where you do I'd probably call Mid West Gunworks and ask them how much to do it properly. Given the humidity in your neck of the woods, I'd like it to remain rust free. A home done re-finish might not be adequate for humidity. A phone call won't hurt. You can always give it a shot yourself, but I there's nothing like a real re-blue and they do great work.

I'd Slow/Cold Rust Blue it.
I'm not a fan of Painted on finishes, but that's just me.
Lots of others like 'em and are much easier to apply.

I have an old 870 Wingmaster that came as surplus from the VA Dept of Corrections. Like so many of their retired weapons, the action bars were badly worn, but of course that was an easy fix. The plastic stock was junk, but I found a fairly nice old factory issue set (Wingmaster, not Express) and added a couple more barrels, and mechanically I’m good. If I ever decide to refinish it I’ll either have the receiver and original barrel reblued or blue the barrel and have the receiver hard chromed by Metalloy. The thing is, it’s an honorable old veteran and sort of proud of its battle scars. No way my 40 year old lady would get painted up like a hussy!

I can't believe the people on this forum would advocate painting an 870!
In the same vein, I have an old pre 29 with original cokes, but since she's showing her age I thought maybe a little Rustoleum would fix her right up! Whadayall think????
The collective wisdom of the forum would tar and feather me!!

Big difference between a rusty 870 and a pre 29 with a 4 figure price tag.
And besides, pump shotgun projects are fun.

Here's my 870 that I used GunKote on. Before I sprayed it, I gave it a quick hit with a sandblaster and some fine aluminum oxide. I used one of those cheap Harbor Freight blasters and my shop air compressor. The gun started out as a beat field gun. I scrounged the barrel and stock and added the Scattergun Technologies sights and mag extension. It's been used a lot on the training range and has a ton of magnum buck shot and slugs through it. It's been dropped on the ground more times than I can count. The GunKote has held up way better than I ever expected it to for a 15$ finish. It is now my house gun for when the apocalypse gets here.

I humbly submit if this were a thread on Shotgun World or Trapshooters, opinions might differ. Including on the pre 29.

Clean and lube it. Well used shotguns are attractive to me.

Hit it with some oil and a good scrub. Then leave it alone and hunt with it. If you refinish it you’ll be looking down at your gun instead of the sky while in the blind. It’s a great old field gun, grew up with them. Use it for what it was made for and enjoy it.

I also have an old Winchester Model 1912 made in 1918 (later known as a Model 12). It has been rode hard and put up wet a lot, before it came it me. I won it on auction for the LGS on Gunbroker for $87.00 about 6-7 years ago (IIRC). Had the barrel cut to 18 inches and it now resides in a convenient place in the house. No need to refinish it as it's looks are not to impress anyone. It is still very capable of doing what it was designed for. Some folks would want me to paint it, cerakote it and otherwise refinish it. I ask why?

The cool thing about a model 12 Winchesters is that you hold the trigger back and pump it empty. That a great feature to have if you can sneak up on a flock of starlings.
I have a couple of really nice Model 12s because my dad had one. Growing up, most guys I knew had 870s. But the 870 is couldn’t go “full auto”.

Had I this 870 I would do the wood with boiled linseed and take my time and let it rust and keep after it with 4/0 steel wool and oil. I would rather have my sister in a bordello than use paint or baked on stuff on a good gun.
