    Overloading 38sp?

Sound like a good excuse to buy a 38 Spl.

    .38 Super question

Try some AA-5 or 3N37 if you have it available.

    357's BULGING?

Is the lead enlarging the case necks a little due to their larger dia. and causing the extra friction? You could try running the loaded cartridges through a sizer (no decapping stem) just to see if that is the cause but of course accuracy might suffer when you fire them from the lead being...

HS-5 Revisited - Heavy Duty Fun in the Desert

I've tried HS-7 only a few times, never in 38/357. I didn't have much luck with it. I didn't really work with it, just tried it here and there with other testing interests. I got the impression it seems to perform best under higher pressure and magnum primers. That's why I was skeptical about...

HS-5 Revisited - Heavy Duty Fun in the Desert

That's better than a 'Nice Job" at 25 yds !! Is Silver State the bullet brand?

    Too hot for the 6" 686 ??

I have to make a confession I'd rather not admit. One day i was testing some 357 loads I worked up for my carbine. I also have some similar reduced loads for my 686. After all testing was done, I found a single 158LFP load left over and couldn't recall what it was, as the code I wrote on it...

    changes in the different cases

Maybe I'm interpreting something wrong, but this post has left me scratching my head. If your talking changes in cases like the shotgun example or balloon head vs solid head then yes, I agree with you but you've got to be joking about the slight changes in head stamps and addition of canneluers...

HS-5 Revisited - Heavy Duty Fun in the Desert

As I mentioned in a recent post, I came across a can of 60’s vintage HS-5 powder. Interested in testing odd-ball powder for no other reason than because I can, I put together 5 each of the following sample loads from ancient tombs of magic I have on hand. I also threw in a couple loads using...

    .270 powders from Accurate

I was in Dillon's store a couple weeks back and they had every AA powder on the shelf except 1680 (the one I'm looking for). You could probably order from them but the hazmat might kill it.

    Picked up some HS-5

I estimate mid-60's My Speer #10 ranks it a little faster than Unique and the 2010 Hodgdon burn rate list puts it slightly faster than Unique, right in with WSL and 473AA. The Speer manuals recommended a magnum primer, but the Lyman & Hornady loads did not. But like HS-7 I was already prepared...

    Picked up some HS-5

now what am I gonna do with it? I did find several loads listed in the older Speer & Hornady books. I read it is inverse temp sensitive and winter is coming here in Arizona so it might be a good time to work some loads up, but what would be the best candidate? I bought it mainly for the...

    Poland powder ?

I think Alcan powder was made by one of the European manufacturers (Bofors IIRC) and were square. I think they also had colored squares in some of them kinda like red dot/green dot.

    Accurate now made in USA?

I just stopped by Dillons and they had all the AA powders except 1680. I got a LB of 5744 cuz I'm low on that one. Paid $30+tax - total about $34. I sure miss those $10/lb days

    Plug Gauges you can afford...

It would be interesting to see the results of using a decent mic to check those tolerances. I recently compared several readings from cheap dial caliper vs a cheap digital vs a mitutoyo micrometer. The digital was consistently .0015~.002 off from the mic. The dial was usually within .0005...

    Plug Gauges you can afford...

I bought the Vermont stainless ZZ gauges on Amazon. for Small primers I went with .173+ and .1745- for Large I chose .208+ and .2095- I had some 30-30 that failed the .2095 pin so I switched from Winchester primers to CCI and they are a still tight enough fit for light to medium loads.

    Plug Gauges you can afford...

I use pin gauges to check for loose/tight primer pockets. I forget the min/max sizes I went with as they're out in the loading room.

    Bullet Puller Tip

If you put something in the tip to cushion the bullet be careful that you get the area clean before pulling different powder loads - especially if you reuse the powder that comes out of the case. anything in the bottom can trap granuals of powder and you don't want to get them mixed.

    Older Reloading Books

I tend to think along the same lines, if it was shot by many people in a variety of guns over a long period of time without frequent incidents then it is probably going to work for me at least to try a couple to see what it shoots like. Notice I didn't say they were 'safe'. I used to shoot a...
