40 or 357sig in M&P FS against Armor

The shooter at Aurora had some level of protection from armor. Which would be more effecting in stopping him: .40 S&W or .357 sig? It may be that for Home Defense we will face armor like this more frequently in the future. If neither of these, what cartridge would be best?

Shouldn't We Gun Owners Say Something about the Aurora Shooting?

We are taking a beating from some irresponsible members of the press about this Aurora shooting. Tonight I heard two reporters on CBS News say that, something must be done to separate all the gun owners from their guns (or words very similar in effect). They are forgetting the rights granted to...

    Thoughts on laser sites

I have an M&P 40 FS for my HD gun and a smaller Ruger 40 for an SD gun. The M&P is a little more awkward to draw from a concealed holster. I expect to put a laser sight on the M&P. Thanks for the info in this thread for showing me it makes sense. Because use of a laser takes a change in the...

    First handgun

I have an M&P 40 FS. I have liked it. To say a centerfire pistol is only recreational is ridiculous. Chances are good during your lifetime, you will need to save your life, or the life of a loved one using that type of gun. At least it should be adequate for that purpose and you should spend...

    M&P thumb safety or not?

Hadn't thought of this in over a year since I got my M&P 40 with only mag disconnect and a key lock (to get other items I liked from available stock). But today on another Forum about the carry condition, I said I had made a mistake by omitting the thumb safety. It was intended as a home...

Does anyone have a good comparison of recoil between the SHIELD 9 vs 40 ?

I have compared a lot of .40's with 9 mm's. I prefer the .40 as a probable man-stopper. Accuracy of a quick second shot with a .40 is generally harder to achieve than with a 9 mm. But it is unlikely to be as necessary. I would go with a 9 mm only when it gives me a substantial reduction in size...

    Shield Specs??

Thanks. I found it tonight. Just before making the post this afternoon, I looked again at the site and found no reference to the Shield in Pistols or M&P Pistols. But it is there now.

    Shield Specs??

I was looking for a smaller pistol than my M&P 40FS for several months. (I tried the 40C and didn't like it.) So Smith came out with the Shield. But I have not seen any specs on it. I have had Smith & Wesson on my system for well over a year and there is nothing on that site about the shield...

Full size M&P 40 for concealed carry

I have a IWB holster for my MP40FS and it works good with anything more than a white T-shirt. I bought a Ruger SR40C for better concealment but it is only a slight improvement. Go with the M&P40FS.

Best Practice Ammo vs Defense Ammo

With some low-cost reloaded ammo I've bought, I have started a period of practicing with the same ammo I am now keeping ready in my guns for home defense and for personal defense: 165 gr JHP. It seemed like a good idea to try to use the same ammo for practice and for actual defense. How true do...

    Georgia Arms "canned heat" opinions?

I started shooting my order today in two guns. It worked fine in both. It is a little dirty. I'll be cleaning my guns regularly. I saw some Federal ball ammo in my LGS today in 150 round packages at a lower price. For the time being I am going to shoot this JHP for practice.

    Bodyguard .380 or the M&P 40c?

I kept a Browning 380 on hand as a home defense gun for many years until I got serious about as home invasions started occuring around me with more frequency. I got an MP40FS for home defense. Then I lookded for a smaller gun that would be better suited to CC and SD. I finally decided to buy the...

    Georgia Arms "canned heat" opinions?

Very good. I have heard nothing negative and plenty good. I'll be getting some.

    Georgia Arms "canned heat" opinions?

Any one havd an opinion on the quality of Georgia Arms "canned heat"? The price is pretty good. Since I no longer hand load, it seems a good way to make my .40 cal range ammo the same as my .40 cal "defense ammo."

    Traded for a 9c...anything I should know?

Be aware they come with a lot of options regarding safeties. Make sure you know what you have - thumb safety (y/n), mag disconnect (y/n), gun lock (y/n). It's a nice gun in many ways. Did you get the manual? If not you can get one online that is easier to use than the paper book (better photos).

    Favorite holster for M&P?

I put my mp40FS in a Galco inside-the-pants holster (WB 472). It fits very nicely and feels good even riding in the car or sitting in an easy chair.

    Kick in M&P Compact .40

Yes, unfortunately, there is quite a kick in the MP40C. I have an MP40FS and like it fine. I shoot it regularly with good accuracy. It is my Home Defense gun. I recently started searching for a good Concealed Carry gun and tried the MP40C as a logical first step. I like the .40 S&W cartridge and...

    Question about M&P 9 and .40

The only thing of concern is to beware there are both FS (full size) and C (Compact) versions of both the MP9 and MP40. The Compact versions have a smaller frame size. If you leave off the c, the gun is assummed to be a full size. Barrel is 4.25" for FS and 3.5" for c.

    Thinking about an M&P 40

I have a 40FS with the mag safety and like it very much. I shoot it fairly well now after almost a year. I tried a 40C a couple weeks ago at the range and did not like it. I switched between it and the FS and found the recoil was just too much. It was no fun to shoot. It really is not much...
