    Smith 29-2 vs 629-4

The pinned barrel is more significant to collectors then as a functional feature. To understand the significance of the pinned barrel/recessed cylinder you have to know a little about the history of S&W design revisions over the decades. S&W has gradually moved towards less expensive...

    Reincarnation?

I was raised Catholic. I still consider myself Christian but my beliefs are quite a bit different then "Catholic" these days. Anyway, I believe that the bible / Jesus' teachings are the dumbed down version. I imagine Jesus as like a rocket scientist trying to explain basic quantum physics to...

Need Info. on Hornady LNL AP

    Measuring Cylinder Throats

Make an impact slug. Measure with micrometer or caliper. Cheap and accurate. Buy a pack of lead egg / bullet fishing sinkers from Walmart for $2. Remove cylinder from revolver. Place a few layers of paper towel down on a flat metal surface (to protect the cylinder). Place cylinder throat-side...

I'm going to say something potentially offensive

I have a brand new sp101. I've read all the trigger job instructions over on the ruger forums but a lot of the fit & finish stuff was perfect from the factory on mine. Not mirror polished but smooth. There were no burs, tooling marks or metal chips, and not even much need to shim the trigger or...

Self-guided sniper bullets - coming soon!

I don't see the utility of self guided rifle bullets. Artillery is different with its high trajectory, beyond visual range, and explosive ordinance. With a rifle though, even if you're shooting 20mm, its going to be line of sight and barrier penetration with limited explosive effect, and minimal...

    Bought an ugly Colt

You can powder coat or anodize aluminum but painting / duracoating won't adhere well to aluminum unless you anodize first. I'm in the leave it as is camp but if you absolutely must, powder coat it. You can even use a clear powder coat to protect the metal without changing the appearance too much.

    Model 629-1 & 629-3

Its more then just the longer notches. The -3 has a hardened yoke, and maybe a few other smaller design revisions. It's a preference thing but I'd keep the -3. Its not like the -1 is a collectible. These are shooters and the -3 will do that better for longer.

    629-2E

I was recently shoping gunbroker for a 629 and in my couple months worth of looking I did see one or two actually marked 629-2E. Just based on the small number I've seen on gb I suspect the -2E is rather uncommon as well as the -3. Lots of -1, and -4 by comparison.

Looking for Opinions of Best 29/629 to Buy

That's interesting about when and why the throats were tightened. I'm new to S&W revolvers so that's the first details about it I've heard. I called S&W a week ago to ask them when they started with the newer ECM rifling in the 629 and they said 1998, or -5 series. -2E and -3 must be pretty...

Looking for Opinions of Best 29/629 to Buy

629-4 is the best shooter, especially if you cast your own boolits. Reason being that prior to the -4 the throats were larger then most molds drop boolits. Throats tightened up in the -4 and mim parts started in -5 so -4 is where the joy is. Pick whatever style 629-4 pleases you.

    629 club

Well, 20yrs puts you in -4, maybe -3 territory so your -1 has to be older then that.

    Calipers

+1. For reloading the harbor freight calipers work great. Digital or dial is a preference thing. I don't mind buying batteries for the digitals. If you have a need for .0001 accuracy look into a micrometer set.

    Fatherhood advice

The idea of being a father took six months to really set-in. By then I had fully embodied my new role. By one year, if you're involved enough you'll really feel like a pro. You'll know what you're doing and generally have that self confidence. If you're at 3mo though, so far its been mostly...

    Fatherhood advice

+1 to numbers and letters. You can start before they can even mumble their first words. Start with picture books. Point and say the name of the picture, number, or letter. Later you can ask them to point to the picture you say. This way they're learning the names for things before they can say them.

    Fatherhood advice

Here's another from personal experience. In a few months you may find that your son delights at riding on your shoulders. It will be lots of fun hearing him giggle up there as you bounce him around while trying to avoid being drooled or spit-up on, but be very mindful of low door jams and...

    Fatherhood advice

I just learned a lesson I'll share. My son is almost 2yo. I cut his hair once a month with a set of clippers. I got the bright idea to give him a Mohawk. I thought it would be fun since a number of other young boys in the family have had them. Figured it will grow out in a couple weeks, and...

    Will S&W reapply roll marks?

I know. But its 4am here and I already spent a half hr on hold with S&W in the last 24hrs. Figured I'd ask just to see if anyone else had given it any thought.
