Thanks for the input everyone.
I'm gonna try to connect with him and go take a look at it in the next week or so - doesn't sound like anyone else has offered to purchase ... yet.

It seemed a little high - the guy is actually asking $700. I emailed him and told him I'd give him $550 if it is in the condition he says it is. He countered with $620 and said that was as low as he would go.
Seems like the new "classics" are pushing peoples asking price way up on the old ones...
Has original grips and a set of targets grips, has box but not original to this gun. Supposedly has only been fired 6 times since it left the factory. Is it worth an hour drive for $620?

D'Angelo,
Guys who can engrave have always amazed me. Will you have access to original drawings, the gun or just go from the close-up pictures on the Museums web-site? It looks like a challenging project - best of luck.

I had a chance back in 2002 to buy one of the new S&W model 3 Schofields - I was not reloading at the time and pasted on it. If I remember correctly the dealer wanted right at $1300 for it ( I think the msrp was in the $1550 range). The things we end up regretting.
That revolver was...
I have never seen that before - makes me wonder if it could add "collect-ability" to your gun like with errors on currency?
I hate to say it, but I kinda like it and if it was mine I would leave it.
Configured like a 4" 617-1 - just shorten the barrel an inch. Full Lug, No Lock, Combat Grips,Square Butt, No MIM, 6 shot.
Or a 648 in the same configuration with WMR cylinders installed and 22lr in box - I would even take this one in a 4" version.
I have a lot of play in the Thumbpiece - rotational play relative to the frame,so I disassembled and I believe the surface on the bolt that "rides" against the hammer is excessively worn and allowing the unwanted movement. So I would like to purchase a non MIM replacement. I could probably use...
I had never heard of a model 73 - so it interested me - I did a search and came up with some old forum results that I believe are saying the model 73 was a 2" full lugged revolver? See last posting in below linked thread...
I think you should find a Elmer Keith 29 commemorative (gold and all) and shoot the heck out of it. I would think that could start new conversations - I've seen quite a few for sale and they all seem to be new in box never fired outside of the factory :)
360J (only one I've got right now) - need to find a model 36 so I can say I have more than one ... really like the way it rides in the Milt Sparks VMII.
Smith has as pair on their website that look pretty familiar to the uncle mikes - I wonder if they are the same construction? I have not see a set of the below listed in person off of a gun.
Product: J Synthetic Full Size Grip with S&W Logo
I was just out looking to see if anyone has these available - 2 sets are on ebay right now and look like they may go cheap.
SMITH & WESSON J FRAME RND BUTT UNCLE MIKES RUBBER GRIPS.. | eBay
the second picture shows the molded in rib that can be used as a "guide".
I an new to this forum stuff -...
If you don't mind modifying grips - You could find a pair of uncle mikes 59007 "rubber" grips (like the ones that came on the 360J's) and remove the third finger of the grip if you know someone with a mill - there is a nice plastic rib that could be followed for removal. Just a though - at least...
I have a 4" 625-8 that I shoot quite a bit. I love the gun - I will only say a couple of things -
1) if you decide to buy one stick with steel clips (I have had a couple of issues with Beckham RIMZ plastic speedloaders - they are easy to load but I had a round that the firing pin went through...
