Has original grips and a set of targets grips, has box but not original to this gun. Supposedly has only been fired 6 times since it left the factory. Is it worth an hour drive for $620?

First... 18-4's came with either pinned or unpinned barrels ,
Neither are especially sought as "collectable" guns unless 100% NIB with all accessories.
This gun is fired making it a clean shooter not a collector gun.
(A little bit fired is like a little bit pregnant IMO...either is or isnt)

4" barrel K22's in that condition are worth $500 max IMO.
extra set of grips + $40...Box is not original but might add $20,

1 hour there and 1 hour back....?
Do you not have a local dealer that will do an FFL transfer?
Do you live in the wilderness where Model 18's are unobtainable?
Are you aware the Model 18 is back in production with an internal lock ?

Not a wave off... but definately in the upper stratosphere of what is a good "DEAL".

Sorry for the thread drift but...

I am a shooter, not a collector but is that the criteria?

If it's had one round fired, it's no longer a collectable gun?

Wow, tough hobby.

It seemed a little high - the guy is actually asking $700. I emailed him and told him I'd give him $550 if it is in the condition he says it is. He countered with $620 and said that was as low as he would go.

Seems like the new "classics" are pushing peoples asking price way up on the old ones - I guess I can't blame them. It would be about a 70 mile drive each way to take a look. He sent pictures, but they are blurry.

I do have a local dealer who transfer - but I would not have to use him since we both live in Iowa and I have a permit.

Are people still finding these around for $500? I don't see many around anymore locally.

Fair deal to me

I would take the drive for a looksie-gambling a little time and gas is part of the deal-if that puts you off, you're not that interested.-If I were him,I wouldn't take less either. Not worth the transfer/shipping hassle for that distance, nothing beats a hands on first exam.
I don't care about boxes, especially mismatched boxes-all of mine go into a Boyt case-I would sell the box here, maybe get 35 shipped.
If as nice as the gun,the target grips should be worth 50-75.I'd keep them,so this brings the gun price to 500 and change.
I'm not stumbling across clean 18s in that price range,or frankly at all.Where's the downside,as if that really matters?

i paid 625 for alnib 18,and thought it was a ok deal.Like they say on this forum, you may be a little more, but you have one and its a no-lock.The extra's make it a fair deal,if nice, ask about ammo, tylers etc to sweetin the deal.Where you loose is gas prices and time.

It's priced high ---- but high as compared to what? High compared to a new one?? Probably not. If you were going to buy a new one anyway, this one might seem like a bargain.

Here's mine, also a -4. It was just like new when I bought it 6 years ago but without the original grips (which I didn't realize at the time) and no box. I'd much rather have it than a new one.

Woody,

How often have you run across a Model 18 in great condition? I ended up getting mine from one of the online sites having been unable to find one locally (only found a 617 listed but the owner never seemed able to get his act together enough to sell it).

I love the model 18 but mine had a really rough trigger pull which improved with a little smoothing work and changing springs.

If you want it, get it.

Thanks for the input everyone.
I'm gonna try to connect with him and go take a look at it in the next week or so - doesn't sound like anyone else has offered to purchase ... yet.

Woody

The next week or so?.... Don't think you're that keen on getting it,so no *** story if it's gone by then. There is nothing wrong with that deal,if it's in the shape described.
I've seen but one older 18 for sale in several years of visiting my pushers.18-4 NIB for 750 plus all of the transfer fees.It would have been mine,if I didn't have one already.

Im sorry thats all you got out of my reply.

Point I was trying to make was that $620 was a good price for an unfired NIB 18-4 but not a shooter grade gun,
Although the sellers description of "Fired 6 times" sounds optimistic it describes a clean shooter grade gun.

In hindsight I should have said "This gun is fired making it a clean collectable shooter worth $520 IMO ,
$620 is unfired collector gun price IMO.

Prices on all S&W revolvers are crazy...a guy in Austin has a nickel 19 for $800...again, they did not produce but HOW MANY 19's in various configurations?
I'm looking for an 18, but not at the price range quoted here.

Like every gun purchase, it's the microeconomics. If you have $700 "disposable" and buy a model 18, you'll still have it 20 years from now. Good deal. You won't have the $700 past next week. If you're going to spend $300 from the "rice-and-beans" money, for the same gun, it's not a good deal. $00.02 please. Joe
