    686 question

I vomit in my mouth a little when I read the term, "Hillary Hole". The connotations are simply too much to bear...

Picked up a 686 no dash long barrel today....

Beautiful revolver! I had a 6" 586 in the late 80`s that I stupidly let go and it was more accurate than I could ever shoot. That was the one gun that I really wish I would`ve kept. Enjoy your new (to you) revolver!

Trying to build the "perfect" nightstand gun for the wife

There`s absolutely nothing wrong with what you originally specified as your choice is well thought out and should take care of most situations. Some excellent points have been made like staying in the bedroom until help arrives (I assume you`d take care of business if you`re at home), having a...

    Anyone here have a M-60...

Like Kaaskop49 and two-bit cowboy, I have a Model 60 Lady Smith but unlike some others here, I find the recoil a little on the "stout" side. Like "baseball bat to the hand" stout. Perhaps this is due to the 357`s I fired having been 158gr and just maybe 110`s or 125`s wouldn`t be so bad. I find...

    Favorite range revolver????

Since you listed two guns, I throw in my .02 worth. My 4" 686-6 and 6" Model 17, no dash. I`m somewhat recoil-sensitive so the heft of the 686 helps and of course the Model 17 has no recoil. My Model 60 is BRUTAL w/ 357`s but 38+p are much more pleasant to shoot. 2.5" Model 19 falls somewhere in...

    686 3" or 2.75" 66?

Nothing wrong with the 66`s and I`m assuming that the relative costs of the 686 vs 66 isn`t a factor for you either. With that being said, some things I`d keep in mind while deciding... 1) 3 inchers aren`t as common as other lengths 2) You state you`d shoot "mostly 357`s" 3) 686 should hold up...

    Smith and Wesson quality Kaput.

I hear ya. Been there, done that. I too have had problems with S&W`s, two of the three I`ve bought new having to be returned to the factory for repairs. See my thread on 4/27/17. Not trolling or bashing S&W, just telling MY experiences. I certainly understand that problems can occur during the...

    S&W Quailty?

Finally got my 686 back from S&W yesterday. Took 5 weeks to get it back from the time I took it over to FedEx to the time FedEx brought it to my door yesterday. Took a good look at it and I have to say I`m pleased with the work. No buggered up screws or extra scratches that I can tell. They...

Top couple of guns you REALLY wish you hadn`t let go?

Well, I feel better now that some of you have come clean about your past indiscretions. I guess I have learned from my mistakes and my hope is that others here who haven`t made the same mistakes will learn from ours and not repeat them. After all, that`s what we (older and now wiser members)...

Top couple of guns you REALLY wish you hadn`t let go?

For me it would be a mid 80`s 586 w/6" barrel. Now that was a beautiful gun. At the time I just wanted OUT of the marriage and stupidly let her have it. Found out later that she hocked it within a month or two after the split...wish I`d have given her $$$ instead. Still makes me ill. A Browning...

    S&W Quailty?

Alk8944, I suspect you could be right as I have fired quite a bit of Remington ammo through it. Could this have happened with only one pierced primer or would it have taken multiple defective primers to have caused the damage? I`ve been shooting for many years now, from the mid 70`s I`d guess...

    S&W Quailty?

The Model 60 Ladysmith was bought in Jul `04 and the 686 approx. `06 or so since it`s back at S&W and the paperwork is in the box with the weapon. I forgot to take the paperwork out of the box when I sent it back (I normally keep the paperwork underneath the foam lining in the box it came in to...

    S&W Quailty?

Hi y`all (I am from SC after all) Long time S&W fan here from the 80`s. I have a modest collection of firearms of all types of which I have a 686, Model 19, Model 17 and Model 60 Ladysmith which was a gift to my wife. The Ladysmith was initially cleaned upon receipt and taken to the range with...

1998 686-5 Trigger Pull & Old Age Problem

I don`t know if you`ve "pulled the trigger" so to say on reducing the trigger pull but I too have recently attempted to lighten the pull on my 686. (see threads) Bottom line...you can lighten the pull somewhat but you`ll not get the pull that you`d like to have in double action and retain...

    J-Frame Carry Round....38-special or 9mm and Why?

I have a J frame in 38/357 and as all have mentioned, the recoil in 357 is simply brutal. It`s like getting slapped in the hand with a Louisville Slugger! Switched to 38+P and recoil, while still somewhat snappy, is manageable, even for her. Ammo availability for both should be good so that...

    Help! 686-6 light strikes

I took the advice of all you learned guys and gals and went back to the stock mainspring and left the #13 trigger return spring installed. I also polished all sides of the rebound slide where they contact the frame. "Very" lightly stoned the contact surfaces of the rebound slide, trigger "hump"...

    Help! 686-6 light strikes

Thank you all for your replies. I`ll heed the advice and reinstall the stock mainspring and slick up the rebound slide and mating surfaces. As elm-creek-smith stated, "A smooth, lighter trigger pull is useless if the gun doesn't go "Bang!" when needed." I couldn`t agree more. Thanks again!

    Help! 686-6 light strikes

I`m no gunsmith so correct me if I`m wrong. In figuring the mechanics here when pressing the trigger in double action mode, you`re working against the power of both the return spring and the mainspring...right? If this is correct then the mainspring supplies all the "power" to drop the hammer...

    Help! 686-6 light strikes

I have a 686-6 that, from the factory, took quite a pull to get the hammer to drop. In checking the trigger pull w/ a trigger pull gauge the double action pull was, I`d estimate, at around 12-13 pounds since my pull gauge only went to 10. Single action was at 4.5. Wishing to lighten it I...

    Lurker no more

I`ve been a member for quite a few years but have been, for the most part, lurking in the background. I`d posted a few times over the years but they seem to have disappeared during a "Posting Count Loss" sometimes in the past. Not a problem though as I plan to come out of the shadows. I`d had...
