I bought the thumb safety as I wanted it for when others shot it and for at the range. When carrying, I just leave in in the off position and it doesn't present any problem at all. I carry OWB in a kydex holster - trigger/trigger glad is covered. I do the same with my 9 mm shield.

I'm scratching my head over what anyone would want to shoot 38 special in a 38 S & W? Yea, you might not get split casings but once they are resized as mentioned in one post, then reload with 38 S & W dies???? If you're going to reload, then buy the proper brass and cast the right size...

My 5" is C1847XX which I was told was probably shipped in 1952 - which is my birth year. Anyway, it is my "go to" Smith - there is just something about a 5" that "feels rigth' in my hand - and it is an excellent shooter too! You are really going to enjoy yours - congrats on your find!
