    Presentation case value

Thanks everybody - good info. I have never bought one of these because, frankly, I have no worthy hardware. I do have a friend who has a nice 6" 29 though, and one of these might make a cool gift. Amazingly, the blue fuzzy stuff in both boxes was just like new. There were two other boxes...

    Presentation case value

I was at an estate auction preview this afternoon. On the table along with other gun stuff were two presentation boxes, both for Model 29s. One looked like home for an 8 3/8" barrel, the other for a 6". The plastic/flocked liners were unbroken, and they had the pamphlets, etc behind the top...

Question about ejector on my 586 no dash.

Hillbilly - I think I can save you a little trouble on this one since I've been down the same road with the same model/dash piece. The original PNs you need are NLA. Fortunately for me the parts guy at S&W took a little time to find a replacement PN for me. What you need are 2) 07724 Pins. I...

Question about ejector on my 586 no dash.

Since no one commented, these pins are not just a guide. They actually assist in driving the cylinder when the hand operates against the extractor. If you run without these, you will soon experience what appears to be a loose lock-up.

Anyone notice this issue with their Shield?

I can make mine do it, too, although it has never done it on its own. I probably have 750 rounds through mine. Never noticed it, and have "shoved" it into a variety of holsters looking for something to use. Really have no concerns it will happen during carry. Nice little piece...love it!

Considering a Shield and have many questions

My Shield is working really well for one application I have that my other guns just weren't working for...in my motorcycle jacket pocket. While it's not a pocket gun, a motorcycle jacket is a different deal. Mine is a flap-type pocket with zipper, velcro and a snap at the front to aid in...

Shield - Possible problem out of the box?

I agree with NucPhysics. I'm not a huge fan of safeties on this type of pistol either, but this one is done well. I have an old Hi-Power with the small safety. I've learned to use the inside of my thumb knuckle to flip the safety lever up and down on that piece, and the technique is the same...

    Holstering with red dot

Now, that's what I'm talking about! And a JPoint is exactly what I was considering. Looking at my 586 in my Bianchi Black Widow, it didn't seem that easy, especially since the holster was going to need modification on both sides of the weapon. More pics please?

    Holstering with red dot

I've got a 4" 586 that I'm considering putting a red dot sight on. I'm concerned that if I do, holstering is going to be a problem. I'm not interested in a competition-style holster. I just want a belt/slide holster to use around the ranch and at the range. Anybody dealt with this issue...

    Cylinder terminology

Thanks everyone for the info. Cylinder Stop Notch doesn't sound very glamorous, but If that's what it is, that's what it is!

    Cylinder terminology

I have a question that I can't seem to find a quick answer for...need to consult with the experts! What is the correct term for the machined pockets in the cylinder that stop rotation when cycling, and lock the cylinder in place? There must be a proper name for these.

    586 cylinder

Hey What The! Thanks for chiming in. My handgun experience is admittedly thin...probably 3500 - 4000 rounds or so over a 6-month period. Long guns for past 40 years off and on, more off. Hunted a lot when I was younger. So no doubt I can't "hit water falling from a boat" with these things...

    586 cylinder

That's what I'm thinking (about the bullets and accuracy). I can't tell much looking at the cone. So what happened to the originals? Are they known to fall out with use? And where would they go, as they're trapped in the gap so to speak?

    586 cylinder

Update OK, so I pinned the holes in the cylinder and extractor. The holes in the cylinder gauge to .055" (#54 drill). The holes in the extractor face are .058", so an odd size there. The holes in the cylinder are chamfered, and it looks like a pin diameter of .056" is what's needed. Wonder...

    586 cylinder

I've recently purchased a 586 M model, 4". Nice overall condition, doesn't look to have been shot much. Been having a helluva time with it; not getting nearly the accuracy I was expecting. In checking it over it seems the cylinder timing isn't that great. Looking at the hand, it seems to...

New Model 29 - is canted barrel "normal"

Ah hah! I think I see the problem with this 586! There are no extractor pins in the cylinder! Without them, the action of the hand against the extractor face is poorly transmitted to the cylinder. There is quite a bit of radial clearance between the ejector rod and the cylinder. I see that...

New Model 29 - is canted barrel "normal"

Barrel torque? Does anyone know the specified torque of the barrel? Also, anyone know a specified "end shake" limit? This gun measures about .0035", so it seems like a .002" spacer/bushing would be a good thing to add. The max clearance between the barrel and cylinder is .008", and that...

New Model 29 - is canted barrel "normal"

I wondered the same! I have a 586 "M" gun, and the barrel isn't clocked perfectly. The error is such that the rear sight blade has to be almost fully to the right for POA=POI. Since the cylinder crane isn't locked in place on the same axis as the barrel or the crane pivot, how can alignment...
