Model of 1917 S&W search start

I have a 1917 that may be of interest. It's in unfired condition and was issued to an officer from Pittsburg by the name of Nolan. He brought back three guns. A Colt Army Special, NIB and a 1903 Springfield Mark1, not new. He was apparently in a position to select the guns because the 1917...

    Any Trap Door experts?

The front sight base is attached by a shallow dovetail and then brazed. The whole is then machined off so that it appears to be one piece. Probably more secure than you will need but a good idea on a military rifle. All the rear sights have the same hole spacing.

    1917 Value questiom

There is a photo in Keith's book of them being packed is wooden boxes, maybe a dozen or so to the box. I purchased this one from the son of a WWI veteran who said that officers were allowed to keep their sidearms. It looks like he was able to select a new one along with a new Colt Army...

    1917 Value questiom

I have a pretty fair idea of what 1917 Smiths in varying condition are selling for. I have no idea what a new unfired piece would bring. Does anyone here know or know the best way to sell one?

School me on the Winchester Model 1907 UPDATE at post #18

If you'll drop a 38 spl in the chamber you'll notice that it fits just fine. Thinner brass. If you get reckless and fire it, you'll find that it works as a fine single shot with good accuracy. If that was a +P you'll notice that it ejects. Now if you have access to a lathe you can turn the...

"Metro Ramp" clamp-on front target sight?

You can find them in the Gun Digest 1957--58. I have one for SAA. It has a red post.

    "Fix" a cylinder?

I was once able to save a 2nd Model #3 by chambering it out to 45 Schofield. of course you do lose the authenticity but you can shoot it. And yes you can line the bbl to 45. It's pretty thin but gave no trouble. I would rather recut the rifling if I could.

    32-44 Target Revolver

32 44 Wouldn't that be the 320 rifle round? They were chambered for that and it is full cylinder length. You can make cases from 7.62 Nagant [pistol] brass. As I remember the bullet is .323.

38/44 Heavy Duty convert to .41 mag?

I have one. I used a M58 cylinder and a much reshaped M57 barrel. Made a rather nice long action. The barrel was rehaped to the 38 44 configuration with some grinder work and a lot of file work. I don't know about frame strength but it is mostly used with 1000 fps loads. It has never given...

Anyone else make their own dies?

I have but only for ctgs that I couldn't buy, 9.3x82 and 38 50 Hepburn. And bullet swaging. Other than that I consider almost any price a bargain.

    S&W #3 New Model Target

I think my point was that there were 32 44 Tgts chambered for the .320 rifle ctg. 32 20 brass is too short.

    S&W #3 New Model Target

Can't find the cite now but did find another. P245. Referencing tests made in 1900. Machine rest with standard BP ammunition in S&W revolvers. Best groups were made with the 32 44 Revolving rifle ctg. 1 1/4 x 1 1/2 @ 50 yards. .320 and 44 Russian also shot 3 to 4 inches at 100 yds...

    S&W #3 New Model Target

The Nagant case is the only one with a .350 base (maybe the Lebel). It is fairly easy to make an expander plug to expand the case to a straight cylinder. You can then trim it to any length desired. I made these 1.060 because that is slightly less than the length of my chamber. They shot very...

32 44 The pix from my phone didn't work. Maybe this one?

    S&W #3 New Model Target

If this works, the rusty one is the 32 44.also shown are ctgs made from 7.62 Nagant and also the long ones that didn't work.

    S&W #3 New Model Target

Chicoine lists three lengths for the 32 44 ctg. .980, 1.3 and 1.465. Obviously only the first is correct. The ones I made up (from 7.62 Nagant brass) would be for the 320 rifle, if any one can use them. I made some more at the shorter lgth and they work fine. Great fun, impossible to see...

    S&W #3 New Model Target

Thanks guys. It is a short cylinder (1 7/16). I was taking information from Chicoine's book "S&W Sixguns of the Old West". Not much accurate information available.

    S&W #3 New Model Target

I've always thought that the 32 44 was bored straight through without a chamber shoulder. Is this true? I have one in my shop that does have a shoulder but I have nothing to compare it to. Were there other cartridges this could have been chambered for? The dimensions are: .352 at the base...
