Who has ever done this? I carry a 357 snubby everyday. IDPA is about shooting what you carry. But a snub might be a little tough, but I think I want to try it. I have a 19-5 that will be my IDPA gun but think it would be fun with a snub nose with my 38 reloads of course. I have a Taurus 605 ss that I love. Great gun. I Love my Smith's a little more though :} . Let me know your experiences. I will let you know how it goes this spring. Jim

No reason you cannot....a 5 shot is certainly not competitive....but your K frame certainly is.

Go For It!

I am not expecting to win the car. Hope to improve my skills with my carry gun and have a lot of fun. Jim

I have used a Kahr PM9 with a bunch of magazines in an IDPA match. It is a good experience that gives you a better idea of the capabilities & limitations of your handgun. No, you will not face a 12 to 18 rnd. street situation, (and live to tell about it) but you can see 1 stage as a couple separate situations. It is another good way to have to perform upon demand in a situation not of your choosing.

I used a Kahr CW9 Covert (6 round Mag) in a couple IDPA and 1 USPSA match. The USPSA match I felt under gunned but not really in the IDPA match. This is the first year for me shooting a Revolver and just was thinking how fun it would be with a Snub nose. Jim

Why not? Try it. I was thinking along the same lines recently. I am going to branch out this next year.

Nothing unusual about shooting what you actually carry in an IDPA club match. Most of the more experienced shooters around here do it from time to time.

One of our lady shooters always shoots her carry Shield in my IDPA club matches, and some novices with full-sized Glocks are still trying to beat her!

I have used my 2" Model 64 a few times, and was most accurate shooter once. What I would like to do is use my 64 at a sanctioned match with ammo that barely makes 105 PF out of a 4" barrel, which is legal. I am betting that it would not be able to take down the steel, and then there would be a real dilemma. I don't think anybody has (yet) been arrogant enough to push the issue.

I'm a Range Officer at our IDPA matches......when I don't have a squad of shooters on the course I'm running I can play around and practice....I've shot the course a few times with my Kel-tec 380. Longer shots can be frustrating!

We shoot a Club Defensive Pistol match every other month. It is loosely based on IDPA rules. We have a Club Snub Division. I have shot my 2" Model 15-4 with great results. I also have a 442 Pro Moon Clip. It will load with either moon clips are Jet Loaders.

We also have a Club Snub Division in our ICORE Revolver Match held monthly. I set up our ICORE Match a lot more Defensive Pistol oriented than some ICORE matches. Almost all targets are 20 yards and under.

Shooting your carry gun in matches is a very good plan. You may not win the match, but it might help you win a real gunfight.

Who has ever done this?

I shoot my 640 IDPA every month. I started shooting only .38 special ammo but have been working up to shooting .357. So far I've made it through half a match before I switch back to the .38. I think it's great practice. I learn something new every time and get better every time. Plus it's a bit more challenging figuring out how to handle the multiple reloads and how to do the string of fire so that you don't need to reload at exactly the wrong time.

I shot one match with a Colt Cobra and my .38 reloads.
Not a pleasant experience overall.

I think my snub M15s would do a lot better but haven't gotten
around to trying one.

I just bumped my load down a couple of .10 on my 38's to see how much easier my Snubby and my 19 will be to shoot. I fully plan to shoot the thing in a match and have fun and learn. Thanks for all the encouragement Guys. Jim

One thing I have discovered shooting my carry snubs in matches. A steel gun is way more fun to shoot.
You will also take a lot better look at grips.

I put some nice S&W grips on my 315 Night Guard, which is a K Frame Airweight Snub. About like a souped up Model 12.
Shooting a 50 round match I am sure with one more cylinder full I would have been bleeding. When I got home the rubber grips went back on it.

My 2 Inch Model 15 is way more fun to shoot than the 315NG.

I am sure a 640 would be more fun to shoot than a 442. Light weight is nice for carry, but NOT so nice for shooting.

My most carried revolver would be my 3 Inch 66-2. I belt carry in a pancake about 95% of the time. Carrying on the belt I can put up with a steel snub revolver. For pocket carry steel is a little hard to put up with for me however. That is the main reason my 442 Pro has not been traded for a 640 Pro.

In my opinion if everyone who carries concealed shot their carry revolver in matches regularly, you would see a lot more Model 36's, 49's, 60's, 640's, and 649's carried, along with a huge increase in Snub Model 10's, 13's, 19's, 64's, 65's and 66's being carried a lot more. I am 100% sure you would see a huge increase in steel being carried if more who carried really put rounds through their equipment.

It would be nice if IDPA would make a Division for Snub's to encourage more to shoot their carry guns. The only down side for us S&W fans is you might see more shooters go to a Baby Glock instead of a steel revolver. When I get my tail kicked in Snub Division it is never by a revolver, it is always a Toy Glock.

Just my 2 Cents.

Bob

Yeah competition is about having fun and putting forth real effort in the challenge of beating the other guy. It would be interesting to see a compact revolver competition, separated from the compact autos.

One day, I'll host a competition. I fully plan on buying 25 acres. I've just gotta set up targets and write down some rules

At least once a year a friend and I shoot our 2.5 inch S&W 686s using full house 125 grain JHP magnum ammo. Makes everyone jump for the first couple of stages. But it makes good practice for carrying the short barreled revolver. I also shoot my 2" model 64 on occasion with 158 grain 38s. I actually shoot more accurately with the short barreled revolvers.

I am one of the few who actually carries a Glock 34 CCW everyday, but I mostly shoot a 5" 1911 in CDP in IDPA.

I have just recently bought a S&W mod. 36 snub spesifically to use it in the IDPA BUG (Back Up Gun) matches held at our club. I also heard a "rumour" that the IDPA BUG rules will be modified during the next year to prevent the current "gaming" and I am positive that the 36 will still be legal and a good option for the division.

And even if it is not, i will still have a ton of fun and get some practice with one of my favorite revolvers. I am still toying with the idea of using it in SSR for a bigger match.....

I say " Go for it!"

As long as your focused on fun and not coming in at the top, you'll be OK.
On the flip side, if you do manage to kick a few butt's, those victories will feel allot sweeter knowing you did it with less gun.

I would and probably will use my 19 to be more competitive. I just want to better myself with my carry gun. There is something to say about shooting the snubby, it is so fun to do. I do wish the IDPA would cover the little guns that most carry. There should be something for even the .380 even though the small 9mm has the .380 declining in sales for sure. Jim
