Default 1911 Grips….too narrow??

does anyone know of a company that makes thin plates/shims or similar to widen 1911 grips (plus longer grip screws)?

it seems the older I get, the slippery my hands get. when I grip my 1911, support hand feels like its gripping nothing.

I have huge hands and my support hand meaty portion does not touch the gun because my primary hand fingers do give it enough room, and when I do shove my meaty portion of my support hand in the opening, I feel it pushing away my primary hand fingers.

I know there used to be a some thin panels placed under grips to add a little width….but I can seem to find them or know what they are called for a search.

my STI TargetMaster already has a longer grip frame and I use Larry Davidson Chubs (which are a tad fatter than a normal grip).

I don't want to invest in his fatest grip in the area of expense to see if there is such a grip shim to try and fit my hand better.

On my standard 1911s, its even worse as the grip frame is not as long around as the STI frame.

when I say longer around, I am referring to the steel on the front strap. the STI has a more squarish round front strap where the standard is more rounded.

just looking for shims at this time. thanks for looking

Are these what you are looking for? CMM Shooting Supplies

You might also contact them to see if they have longer grips screws to match the shims.

Nice grips but as an alternative, you might just buy thicker grips.
I find thicker grips can affect finger position/reach on the trigger. If you widen the grip, you might want to shorten the trigger before your done.

YES!!!! Thanks Steve.

WeeHooker, thanks for the advice. I have plenty of finger but I like a certain spot and this gun has one of those plastic or carbon fiber trigger and while the trigger break is 3.5#s, it does not have enough positive reset for my liking and would be a good time to change if the width affects finger position.

From your image it looks like a rear target sight and perhaps you're looking for precision shooting. Have you looked at Harrett's National Adjustable Target Stocks?

My wife and I have them on our Model 41s. Also, some adhesive backed emery cloth or sandpaper helps with the sweat and slipperiness.

This is PPC 6" 1911 style pistol. I think the rules don't allow any stick ons to enhance grip. I carry 1911 on duty and don't want to veer to far away from pistol to pistol. If these shims work....I will add them to my other 1911s.

I will look at those grips though. Thanks

I just looked at those grips and not sure they will work as in a 150 round match....there are left hand or alternate hand stages.

If you want to try thicker, invest in a $2.00 flexible plastic 3 ring binder at Staples (or any office supply) and use the cover as shims to see how thick works for you. Use the existing grips as a pattern and cut out with a good scissors. You should be able to get several thickness's from one binder. Cut to about 6" they also make (in smoke or blue color) a great side window sun shade that you can locate anywhere by just shoving it up between the window and the frame.

Herrett 1911 D-45 Walnut Diamond Stocks :: Target Grips :: Bullseye Gear
TRY THESE. THEY ARE THICKER FOR SURE. IN BULLSEYE (CMP) THEY ARE TOO WIDE (THICK)TO BE ALLOWED FOR DISTINGUISHED. ,

I too have same problem with 1911 stock slab grips . I use Herrett's PH 45 fully checkered . They've a slight palm swell & a slight thumb swell . Not legal for CMP / EIC leg matches & don't know if they'd be legal in your discipline . I've attached a pic of my 45 wadgun so you could see stocks I'm talking about .

Currently I am using Larry Davidson Shredders in thickness called Chubs.

this grip is thicker that his normal grip but there is one more thicker. I hate to spend another 75$ or so on something that may not work and thick grips are hard to push on the used market.

I did buy me a poly folder and cut the pattern out but need to find a way to punch the hole (my hole puncher won't reach the area to snap the hole)

not allowed any grip tape and would prefer to try the cheapest method first. the need a little trimming and grip holes punched….but they might work.

Is the material to stiff to fold in half and punch holes on the edge?

Pliers type leather punch reach the center?

Good Luck

If you have a Dremel tool that came with accessories, the cone shaped stone in the kit will allow you to make whatever size hole you need in a sheet of plastic. It will be a little messy, but not too bad.

You can also use a soldering pencil to melt a hole or heat up a metal rod or bolt with a touch, or even on the stove, and melt a hole as needed.

The edges of the hole made with either method will seal nicely but, might need to be trimmed flat with a single edged razor blade.

Best of luck, sir.

If you have a store nearby, get the Harbor Freight Hole Punch Set.
I use mine all the time, especially for gasket making.
Or, just sharpen a piece of small-diameter tubing to make a punch.
