Newbie Barrel shroud question
Hi! I just got my M&P 15-22 and already want extra's. My question is... I see alot of people with these neat barrel shrouds that go from the muzzel into the had guard making it look awsome and wondering where everyone is buying these..? I have looked at Brownells/Midway USA/Sportsmans Guide/ eBay ect. and can't find anything Can someone point me in the right direction to purchuse one for my rifle, I have the threaded barrel verson. Thanks!! George

I use a Spikes CAR-2. They run $40 plus shipping or less with the LE/Mil discount. Plus, they usually ship a bunch of cool schwag with them.

Brownells/Midway USA/Sportsmans Guide etc, have not wised up to the scope of the 15-22 owners enthusiasm. Oh yeah, BELT_FED is a good choice.

1/2-28 is the standard thread for the 15-22 and most .22LR firearms.
From their website
Most Production barrels for 223/5.56 would be 1/2x28, needing a -1 Fake Can
Most Production barrels for 9mm (ie. Colt, RRA etc.) would be 1/2x36, needing a -2 Fake Can. There have been a number of other calibers also done in 1/2x36

Their CAR fake can is the one that comes back 4" or so and will add a few inches. I'm not sure if that comes back to the rails on the 15-22 or not. They make 2 others that add no length (comes back 6.5") and one that adds 6.5".
And yeah, you need -1 for 1/2x28

okay, just got home off of 3rd shift... I ordered it before I went to work so now I'm gonna have to call them and try to get the 1/2 x 28 thread pitch. I just went by the link that "Kilo 11" had. I just got the rifle so I had no idea or even thought that there were different thread pitch's. So I'm going to try to have them correct my order to get the #1 can instead of #2. We wil see. Thanks for the help!

Good luck.
Post your results.
I know all about the shift work, too. Been doing it for 18 years with no end in sight

The Spikes CAR1 and CAR2 cans will not add a few inches. They shroud the barrel and screw on just like a flash suppressor. Tacticool22 is correct. The can needs to accommodate a 1/2-28 thread pitch. I apologize for the incorrect link. Once you get it, just pop the handguard end cap out and the can will slide on and protrude approx 2" under the handguard. The total length will actually about a .5" shorter with the CAR2 can than with the flash hider. Enjoy.

Okay, thanks for all the info. I already got the FH unscrewed off the barrel and the handguard end cap off ready and awaiting the fake suppressor. I ordered the SD-1 can from spikes 1/2x28 threads. I know this is a little longer and bigger diameter at 1.5 than the CAR-1 can witch is exactly the inside diameter in the handguard however BUT WAIT! it can't be that easy... I once again did not know at the time of me fixing my order that the inner diameter of the handguard is 1.5" just on the end then tappers down to aprox. 1.2"!!! booooooooo I screwed up again! Well by this time (this morning after 3rd's) the can was out the door UPS so nothing I could do. I did some thinking and I think I am going to shorten the can so it fits inside the handguard until the tapper starts aprox. 1/4" on the end of the handguard. I hope this will work. I really like the "big looks" of the SD can but never thought that the inside diameter of the handguard was not 1.5" the whole length. lesson learned once again. But hey, learning alot about this rifle is not a bad thing since I love accesorizing and will help others too!! Thanks again!
P.S. yeah, shift work sucks (been doing it for 12 years) but when you rotate from 3rd's one week to 2nd's the next week then to 1st. the following week and start all over again you feel like a mentaly chalenged zombie all the time! Hard to find time for much of anything and keep any kind of social life. But job's are thin and you do what you have to do!

Yeah, I feel you when it comes to shift rotations. I've been doing it for the last 12 years. It can certainly wear on you. Good luck with the can. Please, post some pics once you get her put together.

Sure thing, I won't recieve it until 10/21/10 and will take me a day or two I am assuming to alter the lenght and fit it but I will be sure to show everyone after I'm done. The hardest part will be measuring to get the perfect lenght to mate inside the front of the handguard into that 1/4" before it tappers. And then to make a perfect straight cut. I can't really come up with a plan until I see it in front of me, but I'm pretty confident I will be able to make it work. And if I bugger it up, I can always just re-order the Car-1 can for another 40.00 and just screw that one on! I just really like the SD-1 "fatter look" for some reason. lol I will take my time fitting and we will see. Thanks again!
P.S.- Just picked up my new carry pistol yesterday! G17 gen4 can't wait to get time off work to play with both my new toys!

If you do bung that one up, you can give mine a try. You won't have to do anything but screw it on. all mine are 1.125 diameter instead of 1.25 and for good reason. Or give BELT_FED a try he makes them to fit the 15-22 also. And they look good.

Well I finished modifying the fake can. Looks pretty good. Had to cut about 1 1/2" off the back to get it to fit. Here are some pictures!!

Nice work. It is especially gratifying doing some of the work yourself to make your rifle, uniquly yours.

I went ahead and ordered the CAR-1 spikes can engraved yesterday. I am going to get another M&P 15-22 saturday for my wife so I thought I would try the other can and see how it would fit and look! I hope the CAR-1 will work with out having to cut it? It is a smaller diameter so I think it will just screw on. I like the silencer "fake can" look I also performed the "tactacrayola" coloring trick for the lettering today, that worked great and a very neat idea! looks awsome. I just hope it will stay and not come off on a hot summer day or from heating the gun up from firing. I think when I clean it I'm going to put tape over the lettering so when I blast the debris out of the FCG with brake cleaner it won't attack the crayon wax and melt it away. We will see!!! I alos bought a "Fakepoint" aimpoint clone off of eBay today so I am anxous to see how that will function and look.

Mine was not the MOE version to begin with, I just added all of the Magpul tan stuff. Yes I too would keep the irons on as well as a optic if I had the MOE version. I'm a little short on $$ this month so the MBUIS for me will have to wait for now. They should just make the "MOE" version IMHO, I love magpul items! The only reason I bought the A2-comp plain one was that I wanted all the Magpul stuff in TAN color. Otherwise I would have just got the MOE version in BLACK. The tan cost me more in the long run but it dosn't seem so bad when it's not spent all at one time

Where did you get that AR-15 pad?
They should make one for the 15-22.

Got it from Amazon. They have a pretty good selection and yeah it would be cool to have a 15-22 version.

I ordered the MBUIS from magpul but am wondering if they will obscure the optic even folded? I have the "L" mount on my fakepoint. Does your cantalever mount co-witness with your aimpont? Thanks!

The Troy micro battlesights are lower in folded height than the Magpul's. I went with the Troys so I can have a rear BUIS mounted under my scope. The scope clears the rear Troy BUIS even with a slave mount on the scope.
