My friends "Real AR15" and the golf ball
Okay, for months, I have been tolerating my friend who bought a nice AR-15 and an expensive Leopold scope. Today, he finally got to me. On several occasions, he would tell someone in our group that my 15-22 was a replica of his rifle and go on and on. Then, he started telling everyone <in his California surfer dude voice> how dead-on his rifle was because he shot a tennis ball at 125 yards. I asked him where he put it because I could not see it with my naked eyes. So, I upped the zoom on my $49 Sweet 22 scope and set it for 125 yards and found it right away. I looked at him and fired one round and knocked his tennis ball down the hill. You should have seen his face.

I know that shooting something at that distance is not a big deal. I have hit targets at much further distances with many different weapons systems while in the Army. But, it is still an accomplishment with a .22 and seeing his look was priceless.

The last time we had a chance to do some shooting at a farm / open land area, we set up golf balls on tees drilled part way into the top of an old saw horse. Had no trouble hitting them with my 5.56 AR within 100-125 yards. Did notice something interesting though...at short distances, the bullet would pass through the golf ball and barely knock it off the tee. Upon closer examination, the hole left from the bullet was barely noticeable. When we moved the saw horse out towards 100-125 yards, the golf ball (still easily hit) would be knocked 10-15' from the tee, and the holes were much more devastating. Fun with targets, nothing more.

So was it a golf ball or tennis ball? There is a difference.

GOLF BALLS
A Bud of mine each have the identical ruger all weather 7722mag with the same 3x9 leup scope. makes it great for shoot offs. we were shooting golf balls on tees at 100 yd's and each hit on the first shot, He then hit the tee with the second shot, He won that round. Those golf balls are extremely tough and can really soak up the punishment, but my fav is grapefruits at 300 yd's with an older Ruger m77 tang safety, med wt bbl, wood stock & leupold vxl 3.5x10x 25-06. Hit em just right and they turn to mist.

All right, you bring the watermelons, I'll bring the pumpkins.
We'll meet somewhere in South Carolina and settle this!

I prefer Prairie Dogs with a Remington 700 VSSF in .22-250
topped with a Leupold 6X20.
Loaded with my handloads, a Nosler 55 gr. Ballistic tip.
Out to and beyond 400 yards. Kaboom, Plop, pieces flying in every
direction.

It's all good!
We had a guy doing that this summer and he quit using his .223 and .243 and borrowed a 12-gauge.

Some years back, one of the local Halloween pumpkin stands dumped a bunch of leftovers in the woods near our hunting club. We found that if you cut a small hole in the top and fill it with water, you can spread pumpkin pulp and seeds over a considerable area with most any centerfire rifle.

Back in the 80's I attended an FBI run Rangemaster's Course. The range we were on ran up to 750 yards and at the end was a large metal plate used as a gong. The two guys next to me were shooting at it with high dollar .308's brought by one of the FBI instructors and remarking how difficult a shot that was. You should have seen their faces when I took an old supposedly worn out Thompson set the sights at 750 yards and emptied the magazine at the gong and hit it at least 15 out of the 20 rounds. I'd love to have a Thompson for my very own but who could afford one now at today's prices.

Do you think the BSA Sweet 22 3-9x40 is still a good scope/value for the price? I have seen comments that BSA now means better stay away because of the decline in the quality. Just try to figure out which optics to put on my 15-22. I'm scratching my head reading everyone's recommendations. TSA-25, TSA-32, Primary arms Fixed Power 6X32 Rifle Scope w/ ACSS .22LR BDC Reticle. I just want to plink up to 100 yards and fast target acquisition is not a consideration. There seems to be a big difference in price among the recommendations.

I once had a Browning B-92 in .44 mag and what a fun rifle to shoot! I would take gallon milk jugs filled with water and until you see what a 240 gr HP does to one, you won't believe it.
The term obliterate is the best way I can describe it.
