What parts interchange with regular AR's? I.e., the trigger group, the pistol grip, etc?

I just got a used 15-22, mine has no dust cover but I have seen pics of one with it, is mine just an older model or did that owner add the dust cover?

There is no real dust cover for the 15-22 and never has been. There was a cosmetic dust cover custom-made out of Kevlar by one of the forum members but it was pretty much a bust because it was cosmetic, rather than functional.

If you saw a photo with a real AR15 dustcover, it was a one-off home-brewed installation.

You may have to do some searching, but there is a posting available which names all the parts that are interchangeable.

.....and, F.Y.I., none of the S&W M&P 15-22 line come with a dust cover.

However, there is a dust cover created and offered by a member of this forum available for purchase. :D There again, some searching into past forum postings will take you to where you need to be!

Hope this helps.......:)

Parts

The reason I bought the 15-22 over the other AR style .22 rifles is that I could put any AR trigger in it. I am currently running a CMC flat trigger that is absolutely great. I have also slightly modified a MIAD grip to fit my rifle. Keep in mind there are some great after market parts made specifically for the 15-22. NDZ comes to mind. I am sure you will really like this rifle, congratulations.

The trigger group, the pistol grip and anything that can be put on a picatinny rail. Those are the only interchangable parts that I can think of.

The stock; the quad rail (with an adapter from TactiCool22.com); if you have a threaded barrel, just about anything with a 1/2x28 thread (that's legal where you live).

Mil-spec parts rerfers to parts of a particular hardness, strength, and size, proven & tested. It is important to buy a mil-spec receiver to begin with. After that, mil-spec parts will work in a milspec rifle. They are like an erector Erector set, or Leggos. There a some inexpensive, budget-rate, suppliers, but the ease of fit and function is hit or miss.
So stick with a supplier who provides actual mil-spec parts and you will be ok.
FWIW, I built a rifle way back in the '80s with some inexpensive el-cheapo parts and it took me a long time to make it run right. That is, I had to swap out a lot of the internals for the 'real' ones'. I haven't had a problem ever scince with that rifle. My kid has shot the livin' daylights out of it. Runs like a spotted ape.
