!st Shooting Session Today
1st time out with the 15-22 today with my little girl. great fun. I really am not crazy about the handguard, I like the Magpul MOE on my Colt M4 a lot, I'm already thinking conversion. We shot 150 rounds of pretty old Winchester Super X, it shot great except for one stovepipe. The only thing I really didn't like was on one magfull the bolt did not stay open on the last shot and the gun got dry fired. The manual specifically warns agains this, I'm not sure how many time of this to damage the firing pin. Does this ever happen to any of you guys?

There is no damage from dry firing. Even fully extended, the firing pin is too short to reach the breech face. The same is true of the overwhelming majority of .22s. Mine has been dry fired several hundred times with no ill effect.
The failure of the bolt to lock back is a well known problem and is caused by an overly strong bolt catch spring and a not strong enough spring in 25-round magazines.
The cure is to drift out the pin holding the bolt catch in place, cut two turns off of the spring, and re-assenble. It takes less than five minutes.
Good Daddy for taking your daughter shooting!!!!

Congrats on the new found fun. And the dry fire is ok, as stated above the firing pin doesn't clear the face of the bolt by about .040 on mine. It works in the recess that the rim seats in.

I will look at modifying the spring if this is a persistent problem. Thanks for the tip.

Good Daddy for taking your daughter shooting!!!![/QUOTE]
I'm an older parent, it means everything to me to teacher her to take care of herself in this uncertain world when I am gone. I'm drilling it into her to get a good education so she can take care of herself financially, as well as survival skills. She already know my AR15 will be hers someday. That was one of my main motivations for buying the 15-22, to teach the AR15 platform to her.

You got one of the best training weapons out there...use it often and she'll become an expert very quickly, just make sure you teach her how to clear her own malfunctions.
