I am trying to decide on a red dot. I can see the field of view advantage to the open red dot sight, but a lot of guys use the tube type. What is the advantage there? I have never used either.

A red dot sight is generic -- sort of. I have 3 UltraDots AND 3 CMore sights. For Bullseye shooting it doesn't make much difference.

When buying a dot sight , quality costs money. I have one of those 'monster' 2" inch tube things (once) on an AR15. The sight is junk in large capital letters. I would suggest a minimum price of $100 for something worthwhile owning. Larry's Guns sells Ultradots delivered for ~$156 -- an excellent sight for a good price. Ultradots are normally mounted on the slide of a 1911 45 ACP. That will give a sight a recoil workout.

For me, reduced glare and durability we're reasons to go with a tube style red dot. Also, the option to get one that took AA batteries was a plus. With both eyes open, you still get a complete field of view.

I find in speed shooting competition an open reflex sight is slightly faster. And I do use both type of sights, everything from C-Mores ($210) to Burris SpeedDot 135s ($299). If I was shooting bullseye I would buy an UltraDot. If not I would not put the UltraDot on even my top 10 list for speed shooting. In spite of the fact that its FOV is no smaller than an Aimpoint Micro that my friend BJ Norris has used to win world titles. Under $100 the only 2 I currently feel confident using are the TruGlo Dual Red/Green reflex and the Pentax HS20 red dot. Both are under $60. Basically it is what your eyes feel good using. In my case I have used shot timers and found I shoot faster with an open frame reflex type. You just have to make sure it gets bright enough for high daylight dot visibility. The ones I mentioned pass the test.

Thanks guys. Extremely helpful answers! Sounds like it depends partly on application and partly on personal preference. I appreciate the insight and advice.

Just FYI, more $$ does not equate to better. I spent $65 on a TruGlo red/green that is very good quality, rugged, has anti-glare flip-up covers, and has been dead on from day one.

Aye Truglo is great bang for the buck. Have a scope that illuminates which helps my eyes able to adjust to the target and the scope at the same time. Then I have the Truglo reflex at a 45 off set and it is great, glare resistance, its bright and can change the moa dot as well as the preferred shape/design of the dot to accommodate for the target you are shooting at. As well as red or green which is easier on you as well. Ill toss a link of what I got and they run for 60 I believe great bang for buck IMO, but that is opinion. I say just do a little digging as I call it aka research on what the size is, how it will sit, where your cheek weld could be, works for your eyes as well as price and etc. After I did that I went to my local gun shops (LGS) and just asked to see there demo models that were out and played with them till the one was fit my profile.

Ok it is not 65, but I got it at Gander mountain when they had a huge fire arm/fire arm accessory sale. Good luck sir!

Hey Turdducken, do you have a pic of that Truglo an a 45? I have a bug buster on mine now and was thinking of doing exactly what you are talking about. Thanks.

I use the TruGlo red/green system...with a 1/2" riser i it indexes nicly with the iron sight............best regards Plum

Hi,
If you want to try out a reflex sight with a red dot, I found this on Amazon and put it on my 10/22. It took a little fiddling to get it zeroed to the range I wanted (nothing major) and it has kept its zero since I bought it in January. It has 7 levels of adjustable brightness and 4 types of crosshairs - a cross, a dot, a circle combined with a cross and a dot with a circle around it (which I prefer). I think it's supposed to be for airsoft, but it is very bright, it cost me ~$35, and it just works beautifully for plinking. I can't complain.

I also agree...

I like a reflex or halo style sights becouse Target acquisition is much better than a red dot...

I have at least 7 different sights

BSA Red Dot... Cheap and very good for under $40
Bushnell Tube red Dot... Nice but Target acquisition is terrible
I have the Same AIM Reflex.. Not Bad kinda small good for the price
Tried 2 different EoTech Hallo Knockoffs... Both broken outa the box... so DONT buy these...

my two that are currently on my Guns
Sightmark Ultra Shot Pro Spec Holographic Sight... Once I found CHEAP replacement batteries I again LOVE this site.. it does Eat Batteries faster than my other sites but online I found em cheap.. It is on my 15-22. Target acquisition is awesome and Fast... it is a 1MOE dot w/ 5MOE ring....

On my Ar15 I have a EoTech 512.... LOVE this site, yes its $500 but well worth it... the Sightmark worked Good on my AR15 but eventualy failed.. and got it warrantied and then got the Eotech

Bottom Line... get what YOU like... bsic red dots are Nice... Reflex have better Target acquisition but some just like the SCOPE aspect of red dots...

anyways... Enjoy and have fun
