Removing hand rail ?
I really don't understand how to remove my hand rail. My M&P 15-22 is new and I don't have any experience with them. For one, I know there is a clip that needs to be removed at the end of the hand rail. But it wont slide off the barrel because the flash supressor is in the way. What do I do about that ?
Also, is what else I need to do is get this tool to get off the hand rail ? http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-to...e-_-IR-_-59979
I've attached a few pics.

If you're trying to remove the hand guard, you need a barrel nut wrench.
Before you do that though, you need to remove the flash hider with an appropriate wrench.

Why do you want to remove it? If you want to put on a standard fore grip you will need more parts to convert it to a delta ring set up. I left mine on, shortened it three inches and left the end cap off. I put on an A2 sight by trueshottechnologies.com

Make sure you use a Vise Jaws on the barrel and don't clamp the upper. There are plenty of threads about what can happen if you don't. Everything you need is available from Tacticool22. Like Shooting Padre said if we knew what you are going to do we could set you in the right direction.
And a warm from “wild and wonderful “ West Virginia at least that’s what they tell us.
Here is one of many threads about it. Look at the bottom of the pages and you will see some related threads to the topic your looking for. There are also some videos on youtube.

Removing the flash hider ain't rocket science.
Get an armorers wrench, lock the barrel down and turn it. off it comes.
Then, use that thing in your Brownells link, slide it down over the barrel until it bottoms out on the barrel nut and turn it until barrel nut comes off. Slide barrel nut out the end toward the muzzle then pull the hand guard off. The barrel pushes out the back of the receiver, so remove your bolt and charging handle.
I can have it done in less time then it took to write all this.

Okay thanks, this is exactly what I needed to know. I want to clean the outside of the barrel, I'm not going to remove the barrel just the hand guard.

Just remember, once that barrel nut is removed for you to take off the handguard, the barrel is loose & will fall out depending on how you handle the upper. You don't want one of those oops moments.

If all you want to do is clean the outer surface of the barrel, just pop off the end cap and find something to run down between the fore end and the barrel. A flexible strip of plastic, etc. Use a method of attaching a small piece of cloth on the end and just swab it out. I have used that method for cleaning and oiling more than once. Quick and easy. You won't have to take off the flash hider either. Good luck.

Why? Unless you have been rolling around in the mud, there's really nothing to make the barrel need cleaning. My 15-22 has something like 30k through it and the barrel isn't close to dirty. Same deal for my two grandson's rifles, although they don't have as many rounds through theirs.

Same difference really. Once you remove the barrel nut to get the handguard off, the upper receiver slides right off the barrel. And be careful. If you hold it up by the reciever muzzle pointed up the barrel will fall through the reciever and harpoon into the floor or maybe your foot. . Though I suppose you could just leave the lower on the rifle if you were not going to remove the barrel.
