Barrel Shroud

Ordered a KinetiTech Barrel Shroud. Just wondering how tight are you guys putting it on. Obviously clamping the barrel cannot be done to tighten it. Plus, I dont think i would want it that tight. Is the danger of over twisting and breaking the barrel mount on the receiver possible? Snugging it up before each range time cause damage in the long run? Did you guys use a crush washer? Thoughts?

Yea I had the same thoughts with the tacticool but I just hand tighted it and it's been good... didn't even use a washer... worked for me...

I have one from Kineti-Tech on mine, I just hand tightened it, pretty damn tight, but it will still come a little loose after a few hundred rounds, and I also didn't use the crush washer...it made the shroud stick out a little further then I liked.

Yea... that's why I didn't use the washer also... gives the shroud and barrel a more flush look...

Cool thanks for the input guys. It should be coming in today. Now i just have to get the flash hider removed. I've been applying penetrating oil since friday. Without these forums i probably would have broken the tabs on the receiver.

Clamp the barrel in a vise & then give the wrench holding the flash hider a nice firm rap. That works better than steady pressure. I use vise jaws from Tacticool22. Mine was very tight but never needed any oil... just a firm hit on the wrench.

Re:Flash removal

Haven't got the vice jaws and doing this scares me somewhat....let me know how you get on with the removal, I started the penetrating oil before I bottled it on the removal, wuss I know but im going to get the vice jaws before I attempt it again, I don't wanna mess anything up for the sake of a cosmetic add-on.

Unless two parts are rusted together, an application of penetrating oil is essentially useless.

Buy the vice blocks, or make your own out of a piece of 2x4, and clamp the barrel in a vice. Put a wrench on the flash hider and give the handle of the wrench a sharp rap with a hammer. 15 second job ...

Either use the crush washer (the preferred method) or a couple of drops of BLUE LocTite on the threads. If you use RED LocTite, you'll likely need to heat the threads with a torch to break the bond when you want to remove it.

I was thinking of using the 2x4 block method. Googling it, someone suggested cutting a tire tube and sliding it over the barrel, then put in the 2x4 blocks to give a little extra grip and barrel protection.

Yea, i might put a small drop of blue. I dont anticipate removing it very much.

My flash hider came off with just a sharp rap cause I tried that beforehand. .. glad it came off so easy... as for the loctite... ummm I don't know... my shroud goes into the hand guard so if it's to tight and I was to take it off it might torck the upper... I would try it with out loctite first... thats what I did and it worked for me.

It's not a big deal. I swap around muzzle devices and suppressors all the time. Just hand tighten.

So i drilled out my 2x4, put a piece of tire innertube over the barrel to prevent marring. Gave it a not hard, firm tap and it came off really easy. With excitement, put on the new shroud only hand tightened. Here it is. I think I am done adding things. Its unloaded and safe, mags are empty, just in case people see that the safety is off. I havent shot it for 1 month. I dont like to store it with the hammer back.

I keep mine hand tight as I like to swap out from shroud to sound mod to cage to shroud to mod etc.
Depends on what I'm doing with it, range, general plinking, bunny bashing etc.
Nice to have the multiple options to choose from.

Put u some blue anti vibration locktite on it and just tighten it up hand tight. It shouldnt come lose anytime soon. At least not from use of the weapon. But it will come off pretty easily with ur hands if ever theres a time u need to remove it.

MFI Barrel Shroud

Bear with me as I know this is a FN PS90 and is not a Smith and Wesson, but I do have a really awesome barrel shroud on it. It came with four screws that had a protective plastic coating on the bottom in order to protect the barrel. I have had it for two months and I am extremely satisfied with it. It looks good and protects the barrel, which for me is a huge win-win for me. It hasn't come lose or caused any problems, and I've had it on for a few hundred rounds, and I handle it almost every day as I work at a gun range. I used a drop or two of blue loctite after having to re-hand tighting the shroud after two range sessions. Did the same with the end caps.
