Hi,

I plan to use my gun for mostly small game hunting. However the chances of seeing a coyote is pretty good. Normally for a coyote hunt I would go with a .243 but since I love shooting this thing so much I could see having this in my hands 90% of the time Im at the ranch so if history repeats itself the chance of me seeing a bobcat or a coyote wile this is the only gun I have at the ready is pretty good. Id like to find a devastating round that shoots well out of my rifle for these alrger game animals.

To start with Im planning on checking out:
CCI Velocitor
CCI Stinger
CCI Segmented Hollow Points
CCI CPHP Mini Mags
CCI CPRN Mini Mags
Aguila Super Extra High Velocity

1st and most important concnern is making sure the round groups well out to atleast 70yds. I wont know this until I shoot some out of the rifle. Always testing through a clean barrel as that is how I will be shooting each time.

2nd concern is then about delivering a high ft/lbs (FPE) and having a round that either segments or mushrooms so it delivers as devastating an injury as possible.

If you guys can give me any input on the ballistic impact of these or other rounds I should check out I appreciate it.

There is a cool video on youtube that focuses on CCI.

Whichever groups the best. If more than one meets your acuraccy requirement, then decide on the basis of your expansion/ disruption desires.

I have killed a coyote with a SX LR 40 solid but if I had to use a 22 it would be with the 40 grain Power Point. It was designed in Australia for use against the larger varmints. it consistently shoots the best groups out of all of my rifles.

Im guessing that you are suggesting the winchester super x in Round Nose correct?

Personally, I'd keep the rifle slung before I'd use it on a coyote or bobcat. They may be varmints, but we owe them a quick death that's as painless as possible.

While I agree a coyote is at the end of the spectrum for a .22lr a bobcat is well within the lethal area. it comes down to a well placed round and waiting for the right shot however the question of ethics was never a discussion point of this post lets leave that for another post.

Any more reccomendations on rounds?

The reviews Ive read on the velociter have been pretty good,it's faster and seems to group much tighter than the stinger for most shooters.Id stick to close in (50 yard) head shots though.

I would avoid the Stinger and Velocitor in the MP15-22 or any other hot hyper velocity round. You will be saying good bye to your extractor, plunger and spring in short notice if you do. just my 2cents worth.

Not bad advice. These rounds are designed for bolt actions and single shots, not semi-autos.

Using any .22 LR round on large predators should be a last ditch situation, not the round of choice.

As I stated in the very first post my round of choice is a .243, now as to the topic at hand I have also heard that the stinger and velocitor have been the round in most chambers when there is a blow out.

Is there any improvment with the newer blue spring models? I have a newer model and I was hoping it was safe to shoot these longer rounds.

Thanks for the help.

I don't understand why hunting ethics should be excluded as a discussion point in this thread.

IMO, Aguila's 40 gr. Interceptor is the most powerful 40 gr. 22 LR round.
Hardest hitting, penetrates very well, and makes the most muzzle energy. I've used it a lot and never had a mis-fire. Shoots well out of my Marlin 39 Mountie. Also shoots well out of my S&W 63. But for large predators I think 22 WMR 40 gr. would serve the need better and I would be at 50 yards max. with a rifle for coyote sized animals.

The CCI Velocitor is my chosen .22 hunting round. Works very well on coyotes inside 75 yards or so...
Western coyotes are much smaller than the eastern coyote, which is a wolf-dog-coyote hybrid that can get to be 50-60 pounds. No doubt a .22 LR in the head would drop any big coyote, but around here the serious hunters use .223 or larger artillery.

My 15-22 has the blue bolt spring. It blew up on the 2nd or 3rd round of either Stingers or Velocitors I put through it not realizing hyper-velocity rounds are a no no in the 15-22.

To put it simply becouse it allows the topic to be infultrated with views and opinions that have nothing to do with the question at hand.

To share views on such things as hunter ethics is to take this discussion off topic. The topic being what round has the best ballistics for hunting. This topic alone has days worth of data and information to be discussed. As does the ethics topic.

So with that said its easier to share those views on ethics in another post (Feel free to make one) so that we can concentrate on the topic at hand for this post which is hunting rounds and their ballistics.

Did you watch the video?

The RN Mini Mag makes an impressive cavity while maintaining penetrating power The segmented round is aso impresive with how quickly it disapates energy into the target.

The expansion of the HP's is impressive however I wonder if the disipation of energy from the segmented rounds and the cavity from the RN mini mag woudnt be more fatal to alrger game.

I guess Ill be excluding the velocitor and other hyper velocity rounds. Im guessing any round under 1300fps should be okay to shoot through the 15-22?

Heres a video showing the interceptor from a 10/22. I dont think it matches the rn mini mag or the segmented cci round but you can see that it does create a good sized cavity. However this round is also a no no in the 15-22 I guess since its FPS is over 1400 and its only recomended for bolt actions.
