Hey all, I'm wanting to get some higher capacity mags for my awesome 22. I've heard that both Plinker Tactical and ProMag have made 35 and 32 round magazines, before getting shut down by Smith. I've also seen some stuff like better quality safety selectors, charging handles and stuff like made by indipendent compaines back in the day. Just curious to see if anyone has any extras or something they'd be willing to sell. Appreciate It!

It's too bad S&W got their panties in a wad over the aftermarket mags, especially given the fact their mags aren't that great. Compared to my HK416 mags, the S&W mags suck. The HK holds more rounds and rarely malfunction, something I can't say about the 15-22. The Smith mags are about $8 cheaper than the HK's, but when you compare the two side by side and try using them both, the HK's are well worth the extra money. I'd love to Magpul come out with one.

You might want to consider posting a WTB ad in the WBT section of the forum to see if anyone is willing to part with theirs. Make sure you read the rules for posting there first and like all forum WTB sections, be weary of scammers. They are drawn to WTB ads like bees to flowers.

Tom, it sounds like the HK416 mags work in the S&W 15/22, is that a fair assumption?

I never tried, but I doubt it. Without going to the gun room to check, as I recall they are very different in design. Most, if not all of the parts on the HK416 22 are not interchangeable with AR15 platform.

If you can find a Plinker Tactical charging handle get it. Bought one about 10 years ago when I installed a Nikon P-22 scope on my 15-22. A good product. Aluminum rather than original plastic and easier to use with a scope.

So Promag doesn't make magazines anymore for the 15 22? Sorry but I haven't looked in years for extra mags. I did a review on them here on this forum years ago. They are good magazines. The only weak point that I saw was the plastic button used to compress the spring. I ended up buying some aluminum buttons and swapped them out. I also used these buttons on S&W mags as well.

I have been using S&W magazines in my 15-22 for nine years, shooting a match every week, and have had to replace one magazine due to worn feed lips. I think that is acceptable service for plastic magazines.
By the way, I use the McFadden loader. Great tool!

I also us the McFadden loader and it is great. My luck with the mags are way different than your's. On my first 16 mags after a few years of shooting the feed lips started to go so I thought no problem I'll just start replacing them as needed, then the problems started. The replacement mags, and I tried the different colors ie black and desert tan and it was 50/50 if they would work. I ended up with 10 bad mags and I called smith and got the go ahead to return for replacement, that was cool but out of the replacement mags 6 of them are bad along with a couple of others that I had purchased so now I have 10 more that are bad again. I want to add that 99% of these are the 25 round mags so on a whim I bought15 short 10 rounders thinking that would fix my issue but I have have 2 of those go bad already. The plastic is warping along where the load assist button runs and binds up, I have tried using with out the button and they still bind. I think that who ever is building these for them may have changed the formula of the material that they are made of. This is with no chemicalcleaners or lube and it's not heat as I keep them in a cooler or insulated bag. So as far as I'm concerned the new ones are 50/50 junk.

Here is a couple pics of the mags, all 12 need to go back.

Are you saying that the replacements were that bad from day one?

Does S&W make their own mags or do they use a subcontractor?

I heard a rumor it's Magpul.

I wish they would make a 30-40 round mag.

YES they are that bad. Some worked once or twice and failed others failed right out of the gate. So if you are buying new or replacement mags, if they will let you, take them out of the plastic bag they come in and grab the load assist and stroke it full length of the slide if there is any friction or binding don't get that one.

S&W replaced the five mags that had broken feedlips. I ordered 10 more. All work.
