M&P .40fs home defense and range ammunition???
Hey guys, just got my M&P40 FS this week. Wanted to pick up some ammo for home and range. Thoughts on what your .40FS likes best for each of them?
I'm heading to the range next week, so I'd like to save money on the ol' process of elimination.

Your 40 shoot eat just about any range ammo. Buy a box of inexpensive target ammo and see.
As far as self defense ammo, opinions and preferences vary. But in the end it's your choice. Pick a premium self defense round, make sure it functions properly and is accurate and stick with it.
With todays technological advancements in self defense ammo, the playing field is just about even. None of them are magical. Shot placement is more important.

Great info. I will try some when I get to the range. I agree that shot placement is key. I just wanted to hear about some tried M&P .40 ammo that I can try to use first as opposed to just trying different boxes out.
Thanks for the post...

To be more specific, I shoot the least expensive range ammo I can find that I KNOW is good quality. Which most of it is.
Tulammo at Walmart, I know nothing about except that it's very dirty. Winchester white box is good. I've also shot Magtech, Fiocchi, Sellior & Bellot, CCI Brass, American Eagle and others with no problems.
Wish I could be more help but I've never had any jamming or feeding issues with any of my M&P guns. None.

I've had good performance with Winchester white box, but to save money I was shooting Miwall reloads from Crossroads of the West. They shot fairly well but I started reloading and it saves money and I have full control of consistency. I'm loading 6.2gn of Unique behind Rainier 180gn SWC plated bullets w/CCI primers. This load has some snap but is very accurate and I load 100data rounds for about $14.

For home or SD I like to use what the local leo's use. They have put more ammo to the test then most and use a very good all around ammo. By all around good ammo, I mean they no what will over penetrate or under penetrate, what will go thru a car door what won't, what will work in the summer when people are dressed lightly or the winter when they have many layers of clothes on ect ect . And if you ever find yourself on the defense for pulling the trigger on someone when asked why did you use x brand of ammo its nice to say "cause that's what the police use". I really like the Idea of being able to use that line when a prosecutor is trying to make you look like the bad guy.

I buy plinking ammo from this place, shows up in a nice 30 cal. military ammocan. Decent stuff too.
Georgia Arms - .40 S & W
For home defense my MP 40 loves 165 grain and 180 grain Golden Sabers and they seem to be on sale at a few places here lately. See if you can find the Golden Saber Bonded, it's a popular LEO round.

I have used the white box Winchester from Wally World for my target practice and I keep Hornaday HP loaded at the house for HD.

I generally use Winchester white box, PMC or American Eagle. They all shoot fine and arn't too dirty. I do not shoot Remington UMC anymore, it is too dirty.
For defense, I use Hornady Critical Defense 165Gr

+1 Winchester White Box, Federal, and PMC. PMC is fairly dirty though. For home defense, I use Federal LE HST.

I've shot Winchester white box, Remington UMC, Lawman, CCI Blazer Brass, and American Eagle through my FS 40. Everything goes through fine.

My M&P .40 Pro seems to like Winchester white box best for the range. I have had no problems with any ammo feeding or functioning, but so far it seems the most consistent for shooting paper. I have used Federal, Blazer and Tulammo, which must use very cheap non-clean burning powder. Although for home defense I would say my choice is also Winchester PDX1 ammo, just from what reports I've read and since it is the ammo the FBI uses from their ballistic tests. It is a bonded jacketed hollow point that expands into a rose petal shape.

Although I run HST in my 9mm, I feel the Speer Gold Dot 165 gr. bullets are where it's at in .40 S&W (same maker as HST, btw):

I like 180gr FMJ at the range - any factory loads will do, but I draw the line at brass cases - no steel. Winchester white box is fine, but I find it dirties up the gun more than others. Federal, Fiocchi, PMC, Blazer, Lawman, etc. - it's all good. I haven't found any that my 40FS didn't like.
As for home/personal protection, I keep it loaded with Speer Gold Dot 180gr. Expensive for the range, but I have run a box or two through just to make sure there were no issues - and guess what? - no issues whatsoever.
Same for 9mm and 45 - any factory load should be 100% reliable in all weapons - if not, then something is wrong. The only issue I have encountered with factory ammo was certain brands would clog up the firing pin on my Ruger LC9 and cause light strikes.

Personally, I like the Corbon DPX ammo and carry that in my 9FS. It's an all solid copper hollowpoint bullet.
Here is a link to the 40:
