Defense ammunition
Has anyone heard anything about the Liberty civil defense ammo? I picked up a box of 50 gr. hollow points rated for 2000 fps. There is a you tube video about them and they were wicked in ballistics gel but was curious about practical use. Any ideas about those rounds?

Off-brand garbage ammo with inflated ballistic numbers are to be avoided in a defensive pistol. Stick with known name brand factory ammo. Save that junk for the range or better yet leave it on the shelf at the gun shop.

I can't say if the ballistics were inflated but on the you tube video the round was chono at 2191 fps if the video is authentic. The round is supposed to not have any lead and is supposed to fragment like the RIP defense round. Take a look at the video and let me know what you think. Thanks.

I'm not a ballistics expert by any stretch of the imagination but like to read up and research, like mention before I believe this ammo is all marketing with no real effectiveness in real life. What experts say in order to find the right carry load you have to find the balance of penetration and expansion, there are to many variables to determine what is best for you in the end you have to do your homework. I prefer medium to heavy projectiles for my carry load, once again like mention before stick to proven loads rather than sensational advertising loads.

If you want a round without lead try the 115gr corbon dpx. Better round and a lot cheaper.

I am going to try a few rounds before I make a decision. I am still carrying hydroshock rounds in my M&P SHIELD 9. My son is a police officer and they carry the M&P 9. But the dept. switched to a different round. Was just curious what the scuttlebutt was on the Liberty civil defense round was. Thanks for the input.

50 grains is just a little heavier than a .22LR. Not a round I'd choose for self-defense when there are so many proven rounds out there.

In one of the videos I found the person who tested the round mention that .22LR penetrated deeper than the round in question.

There are sooooooo many vetted rounds out there. This stuff may end up being the best there ever was....but I'm going to let the market, and the emperical evidence decide that over several years before I "believe" it.
That goes for all "new and improved" ammo.

According to the FBI the ideal defensive round should travel fired 10 ft away through 4 layers of denium and fully expand and most importantly stop between 12 and 18 inches in balistic gel and retain most of the bullets original weight. (RIP or other bullets that fragment upon contact will not be as effective as a bullet which fully expands and retains most of the original weight because alot of the fragments which Brea away from the bullet will not travel the minimum 12 inches. To maximize tissue damage you want as much of the original weight to stop between 12 and 18 inches and less mass equals less tissue damage that is why a 230 grain 45 will inflict more tissue damage than for example a 124 grain 9mm that traveled the same distance.)
If the round you carry will satisfy the above criteria you are good to go.
The challenge I have encountered is the majority of 380 rounds will not fired from a 2.5 inch barrel meet the FBI standard and carrying FMJ as a defensive round from my research is a bad idea. In a 380 round it will travel clean through the average human body increasing the risk of hitting an innocent by standard and the tissue damage will not be as great as an expanding bullet.
Checkout Lehigh ammo if you pack a 380. However if your round is a 9 mm or greater most defensive round brands will meet FBI standards.
