Well, finally made it out to the range with my M&P22. This is my first gun. I used Federal blue box 525rd bulk ammo. I had about 6 failure to fire out of the box of ammo, which I thought was pretty good for the breaking in period, from what I've read hear in the forum. The accuracy was pretty good out of the box considering I am a beginner and have never shot a handgun before, I was getting 4in groups. I have to say, it was a fun 2hrs bonding with my son. I see the value of using a .22 for practice, watching the other shooters shoot there box or two of ammo in less than 30 min aand leaving. For $20 dollars worth of ammo to be able to shoot for 2hrs. I'm hooked: I want to thank you all for the good advise you gave for getting the gun ready for the range and the right ammo to buy. Now just have to clean it and get it ready for the next trip.

PS: My poor man's $1.75 speedloader worked great

Did you clean the gun before you went to fire it?

I cleaned my M&P22 before I fired it and then ran several hundred rounds through it with no failures of any kind.....

Glad you enjoyed your outing with it! I hope to get back to the range this weekend. I also shoot a Shield 9, and having the 22 helps to extend my time on the range cheaply.

I love my M&P22....well at least after I got a couple extra mags for it.

It has been outrageously reliable for a .22 pistol. Out of about 1000 rounds I've had exactly "0" malfunctions. Seriously, none. I did clean it and lube it before shooting the first time. Now I only clean it every 500 rounds. It's also plenty accurate. I can use it to pick varmints off my garden fruits and vegetables from about 15 yards away.

It's a great training gun for me as the M&P9 is my EDC. It has allowed me to shoot weekly instead of monthly due to the cost of ammo.

My only gripe is the manual safety that doesn't work well with some of my holsters. I can get over that, and might figure out a way to remove it one day.

More mags does help (get rid of ammo quicker) but it's still cheaper to shoot.

All 22 ammo is dirty to one point or another so I have always cleaned my 22's after every range trip. I've had almost zero trouble and that's usually the ammo FTF. ...and any 22's will do that now and then.

The failures were at the end of the box, figured it was just getting dirty or just the 36 grain Federal ammo, gonna shoot another couple of boxes this weekend, that should break it in.

Mine had so much crud in it from the factory I don't think it would have ran very well.....

I shoot mine way too much to do that. I also figure that since I'm not dependent on their function for defense I'm not too worried if they happen to develop a fouling induced malfunction. I do re-lube them periodically during the 500 round period though. I don't want them getting more wear because of a lack of lubrication.

I never would have felt the need for such a thing, the button on the side is plenty big and comfortable enough to use. But, good for you. Improvising cheaply is an art form.

Went back to the range and went thru 2 boxes of Federal bulk over a 1000 rds. Loaded 87 mags, your're right though pretty easy to load, just wanted to save my thumbs cause I'd knew I'd be reloading alot. almost 3 hrs of non-stop shooting, I love this gun. I had about 5 stovepipes towards the end, the gun was getting pretty dirty. Still happy with my purchase.

The outdoor range my son and I go to also has a .22 only plinking range. Surprisingly, the plinking range is rarely crowded. We usually start the first 1/2 hour or so at the 10/15/25 yard pistol range with the 9s and 22s. We then end up spending the rest of the time shooting the 22s at the plinking range. Between the two of us, we usually get through 2 boxes of 550 Federal bulk packs in about 2 1/2 - 3 hours. Yeah, 22s are loads of fun and quite inexpensive.
