Law Enforcement & The M&P

[offtopic]
 That had to be, uh, entertaining... How did you cope with it?
[/offtopic]

It was cause I was watching. I had loaned the pistol to a friend who wanted to shoot it. We were shooting at a 50 yard target. You had to prop and press your left hand against an upright board, while standing, to steady the pistol
( simulated edge of a barricade). The board was stuck in slot in the ground. There was some give in the board. My friend pulled the trigger and got a three round burst. Fastest triple tap I ever saw. The only thing I can figure was that the pistol which advertises the best polymer trigger went into a bump fire mode as a result of the board being flexible - kind of like the slide fire stocks you see advertised to make the AR shoot faster. I believe the PPQ has a precocked internal hammer in it.
Much more disturbing was the inadvertent magazine release which I believe is caused by an ergonomic defect. This has happened to a few others.

Oh, so it was more Robocop and less Jamie Lee Curtis... that's comforting.

I found myself wondering exactly what I'd do if a semi pistol just spontaneously decided to do a mag dump on me.

Well I caught the magazine before it fell out of the pistol both times. It also did that to my friend, who I gave the pistol to to shoot. I posted on the Walther forum and noticed two other people had the same problem. I was told, on that forum, if I wished to shoot that pistol I had to change my grip to thumb over thumb instead of thumb under thumb thumbs forward. I said that was a ridiculous grip for semi autos. That apparently upset some people who said I had a " textbook grip." I then posted some pros, who recommend the grip - combat vets, pro teachers, LEOs and championship shooters not academics. That got them more upset. The pistol has an ergo defect. FN had the same defect and cured theirs by making their mag release smaller on their pistols. I said I was going back to shooting my S&W M&P. They thought that was just awful I had to go back to a terrible pistols. Like the PPQ is in widespread use duh.
If you look at the mag release on the S&W it is made flush with the grip. Most other pistols are the same way or have a small mag release. The mag release on the PPQ M 2 sticks up and is rather larger. They could easily correct this; but I doubt this will happen.

My PD switched to M&P 40 calibers, with detectives having the option of full size or compact models for carry. I have heard no negative feedback. I was skeptical at first, but have found the pistol to shoot and carry well. I like it enough to have purchased a full size 45 caliber model for personal use.

High round count is fine but the ammo used is important. The nypd tests was with +p duty ammo. Makes a difference over target ammo

Springfield police carry the 40 and MA state police carry the 45, that I've seen...

Worcester police went from the M&P 40 to the M&P 45. Always funny to see a petite, female officer with the FS 45!

Never have seen a cop carry an M&P. only guys I've seen them with is the ones running a brinks truck.

ANY LEO chosen firearm is as much political as practical. Massachusetts and New England is the land of S&W so of course the full court press is on for PD's to pick S&W.
But having said that, the M&P line is a great pick!

#3 on reasons I won't buy a glock is...glock owners.

They are tiresome, aren't they? To the subject. The Detroit Police Dept. transitioned to M&P's, (from Glocks), some years back.

Hey I resemble that remark. I am ofter torn between my M&P's and my Glocks. I like both. The age of plastic guns is a great age.

Gentlemen; Early M&P's had some issue's that S&W corrected, Mag latch springs, Breaking strickers, soft trigger reset, dead trigger issues. Oh, and the 9 FS had a notorious reputation for just being flat out inaccurate. All of these problem have been addressed as of 2013.
I carry and .40FS on duty and have for over 4 yrs. Only problem I have had is soft reset, and I fixed that w/ an Apex RAM. Roughly 1200 rds thru it, no probs.
I do know that the M&P had a rough "shake out" for the first couple of years, but all seems fine now. And of course, love the fit to my hand.
I also believe that the Texas Dept of Safety(State Police in Texas), are switching to M&P FS's in (believe or not!) 9mm! I think for several reasons: Adaptability for hands, Price of ammo(DPS was carrying SIG's in .357 SIG. Neat round, but very pricey and not wildly accepted), and with +P 9mm, the ballistics are only a little less comparable to the 357 SIG.
So, time will tell if it works down here. I will advise when I hear anything.

JL, the version of the switch by DPS that I heard was that the 9mm M&P would become an "option," but that guys could keep their Sig .357s if they wanted. I figure it is a way to start easing out of the expensive Sig/round without making everyone switch at once and create dissension from guys that prefer the hotter round. My bet is that eventually they will issue only the M&P and grandfather in Sig .357 carriers.

I recently just started carrying the M&P for duty. I retired from the state police after carrying a Glock since 1990. I was issued an M&P 45 from my local PD and found it to be an easy transition. The only real problem I have is getting used to the trigger. The Glock trigger reset seems to be more defined. I found myself not resetting properly during a recent qualification course. Other than that I really like the M&P.

Greetings from Idaho! Twin falls County Sheriffs Office issues the M&P .40 to line staff and the M&P .40 compact to admin and investigations. Twin Falls City police issue the M&P .45 to all officers. I believe the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office (also Idaho) is also issuing M&P's in a choice between 9mm and .45acp. I like mine pretty well. I have found them to be quite reliable although the triggers leave much to be desired. A bunch of the other officers seem to have mixed feelings. In my opinion they are a good gun. It's probably my favorite polymer framed pistol.

Another class...another 1,000ish malfunction-free rounds through my 2012 M&P!

Good thing I put a thin coat of froglube on the lens...Otherwise it'd be a pain to clean! This is with new batteries and the light on;

I work in armed protection, not L.E.

However a month or so back I bought a M&P .45 for duty. Got a great deal on it, traded a broken glock :-D

Gun seemed great, well weighted, fired nicely, accurate and no hiccups.

Only reason I went with a sig 229 over it was holster selection.

Safari Makes the ALS/SLS duty rigs for it. However that is ALL I could find. No 070's or leather options. Just kydex with a hood, or thumbswitch. I'm a fan of REAL level III retention such as the 070.

Not enough people make duty rigs for them, so I opted for a pistol that I shot just as well if not better, and a very sturdy rig :-D

However if they hadnt discontinued the 070 and still made em for the M&P.......I'd buy another and give it a shot :-D or 300

I used packing tape in class that day....easy to take off and no cleaning anything off the lens......:)

Oh...and I order a backstrap from Chris Damato...well worth 15 bucks shipped since I didn't want to alter any of my original equipment....the S pattern looks nice and feels great.
