I've been on the fence about buying an M&P for a loooong time as my interest in S&W pistols has been with the 3rd Gens.

I bought the original SW40F Sigma when they came out and my experience with it spending more time at S&W repair than at the range being shot the 1st month I owned it, really soured me so I went to and stuck with the 3rd gens.

S&W's decision to abandon CA pushed me off the fence to give an M&P45 a try before it falls of the CA roster on 1/31.

So now I'm playing catch up with you all... in reading through the various threads, it looks to be a no brainer decision for doing the Apex upgrades.

I' trying to figure out all of the Apex alphabet soup seen in forum threads... DCAEK, FSS, AEK ??

The trigger replacement looks to be a "must", which is included in the FSS kit. But the DCEAK has the hard sear.

So what's the "usual" thing that people do? The DCEAK and a trigger?

In a nut shell, what's the difference between the FSS kit and the DCEAK in what it does for the gun?

I'm not using it in competition, just want improvement over the factory stuff... I was less than impressed when I checked it out at the LGS when I bought it.

The gun is in the CA 10 day waiting period jail, I want to have the apex parts here when the gun gets paroled.

FSS reduces take-up, other than that, the FSS and DCAEK (w/AEK trigger) are pretty similar.

I have an M&P .45 and I think it's a great gun. I wanted a trigger that was more like my 1911 so, I got the Forward Set Sear kit. It's a lot better than stock, but still not as nice as a 1911.

Take your time and read up some more on the Apex stuff. More importantly, don't do anything until you shoot it some. You just might find that the stock set up is fine for you.

A little polishing of the nasty machining will net you a good trigger at the expense of about 5 minutes work.

As far as comparing triggers? A 1911 is a single action trigger. My M41 is a single action trigger. You can't compare a single action trigger to a duty gun.

I wouldn't want a 2 pound trigger on a gun with no safety I'm jamming in a holster and carrying in my pants all day. ;)

1911's have safeties.

What parts to polish to make improvements?

Also, M&P45 drops off the roster on the 31st. If you want one call Canyon Sports in Martinez. They had one in stock today for $499.

I've just ordered the Apex DCAEK for my MP40, watching the videos to make sure I know how to install it seems pretty straightforward.

Has anybody got/seen a list of specific tools I need to make sure I have before I start, though? Size and type of punch, hex wrench size(s?), and the like?

Thanks!

The punch you will need is exactly the same size as the tool in the handle. In fact, you can use that tool to push out any pin necessary to do this install. I just chose to use a regular punch I got at Loews. A pair of needle nose pliers might help. A small hammer is useful.
