I am looking to buy a shield for a carry can. I have an sd9ve right now and was wondering about size comparison. Does anyone own these 2 pistols and care to post up a few size comparison pics? If not, can someone measure me the overall height of the shield with the flush mag anda second measurement with the extended magazine. This would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I own both and can tell you that the shield is about 4 1/2 inches with the flush mag and would guess about 3/8" to a 1/2" more with the extended mag.

With the extended mag it is about the same length as the back of the grip on the SD. The shield does not have much of an angle at the bottom of the mag/grip area, it is flat.

The slide on the shield is also about an inch shorter than the SD.

Where you really gain on the shield is how thin it is compared to the SD.

Hope that helps you. I can take some pics but the lighting in my old abode is not that great.

Does anyone have the actual dimensions of the SD9VE? Everyone says it's the same as a Glock 19, but no one seems to have the length x width x height. I've seen pictures of the slide compared to an M&P9 slide and it looks thinner, but according to Smith's site, it's actually wider (1.29" width for the SD9VE and 1.2" for the M&P). I wish Smith would do a better job of listing the specs on all of their guns. Looking at Smith's site, I get the impression that the SD9VE is actually larger than the M&P9 FS.

My main thing i want to know is the grip of the shield with the extension, longer or shorter than the grip of the sd9. Carrying the sd9 in jeans with a tshirt the bottom of the grip prints some and can tell there is a firearm there. But if the grip is shorter i think i would be fine (im talking appendix iwb). If you could, take a pic of the shield with the ext mag and sd upside down side by side and show the grip length difference. Tat would answer my question perfectly.

The height of my wife's Shield from the top of the sight to the bottom of the extended mag is 4 7/8".

You will have issues pocket concealing a Shield with an extended magazine and a self defense pocket draw in slacks is out of the question. The opening of the pocket is not enough to accommodate the distance between the base plate and the rear sight.

In fact I traded out the stock sights for XS Big Dot because the stock rear sight kept catching on my pocket with the flush magazine when I attempted a self defense draw.

The XS Big Dot has rounded edges that will not catch on the pocket opening and a lower profile vs the stock sight.

Trey, I will support Russ in that the Shield is a really not a pocket carry gun. Yes, there are people that can, but overall, my Shield is just too large, with either mag, to sit comfortably in my front pants pocket. Regardless of holster type.

If you are intent on front pocket carry, I would look at any of the myriad of other options out there.

Sorry guys, when i said jeans i didnt mean pocket carry. It will be holstered aiwb style. Hope to clear that up

I thought we were talking pocket carry which I do with my Shield but honestly it is not the most ideal at 24 oz loaded.

I am thinking for pocket to pickup either a Ruger LCP which is 1/2 the weight loaded or the Beretta Pico if it turns out to be reliable after it is released..

If you plan to carry iwb the Shield will be a wonderful choice.

I prefer the flush magazine for concealment but each to their own.

Enjoy,

Russ
