Range Bag?
New to the forum but I recently picked up a M&P 40FS so I've been on here for while doing some research etc.. Couldn't decide between the M&P 9 and 40 when I decided to get one but I'm very happy with my 40. I am hoping to get some info on good range bags. We have a pretty nice range not to far away from where I'm stationed right now and the big advantage is that they have short/long range pistol, short/long range rifle, and archery. Each area is a little spread out but we like to take advantage of each when we are out. I normally have 3 pistols, mags, ear pro, ammo (pistol and rifle) paper targets, stapler etc. What are yall using and what works best?
Thanks for any info

I bought this one from the S&W store, it is high quality & durable with all metal hardware much better than what they sell at BPS or the Academy.. they come in a couple sizes, this one is the smallest as I only own 2 pistols, it works for me. plenty of room for both guns, couple hundred rnds of ammo for both, my ears, magazines etc...

Midway range bags rock, best bang for the buck IMO. Just got one of their rifle bags for my AR, just as nice.

I just picked this one up from LA Police Gear.
Available in black, OD, foliage, and desert tan.
Great reviews and only $19.99.

I use a non-descript canvas tote. Holds all my stuff. It's by one of those WalMart suppliers, not sure which.
The last thing I want is a bag that screams THERE IS AN EXPENSIVE GUN INSIDE.
YMMV, of course.

I like padded bags that do not have any "branding" on them at all. I do not like to advertise that I have guns, etc inside. Something I would caution you against.. do not get a bag that is too big. You will end up putting tons of stuff in it and it will weigh a ton! Trust me, been there, done that. You would be surprised how much stuff you could get into a smaller bag. I saw a backpack style bag that I really liked.. In the bottom half of the backpack, it unzipped and inside were 3 gun rugs. The top half had lots of pockets for ears, etc. Something like this might work for you..

Are you leaving your guns in your car or truck or something? Because if you roll up to the range with a Gucci bag or something it's not like people won't know what's in it.

+1 to CaptRon956. I too use the range bag from the S&W site. Works great, no complaints. It's not cheap, but it is well made & doesn't look like some bargain brand bag.

Bought a large Expedition bag from Amazon. Almost too big, but I have no complaints (until it gets heavy-LOL). Also bought a Winchester Deluxe Shooters bag off E bay for 22 Bullseye League night. This worked well for me. I think it came with 2 gun rugs and just has 1 large main compartment.
As mentioned before, the larger the bag, the more stuff your apt to put inside. A good medium size bag should work well for you. :-)

I personally just carry a padded The North Face backpack (same one I use for hiking) and my ammo box haha. Nothing too fancy. My backpack holds my ear protection and a couple pistol cases inside. That's all I need.

another user of a backpack here; one that is a little stronger so it can handle the weight of ammo boxes in the bottom, a couple handguns in their soft cases, plus the odds and ends pockets hold my 'eyes and ears', etc. Nice that i can throw it over my shoulder if needed, works well for me anyhow and as others have noted it is more nondescript.

Back when S & W came out with the M & P's they gave away range bags similar to the one you pictured with each purchase. I still have three of them and gave away a couple.
I have used my original since I got it for my regular range bag The others are back up or light suit cases for short trips. They have held up well, especially the one I use as my range bag. They will probably outlast me.

I ordered mine here http://www.shop.hafnerbags.com/ They make them there (in the USA). They have a large selection of styles and will customize the interior or make any changes you need. Nicely padded and well made.

I bought a Blackhawk Sportster Deluxe from Amazon. I find it large enough to carry 2 or 3 guns, ammo, targets, cleaning kits, ear protection, etc. If I remember it was $39.00.

I have the exact same bag as dgunnut. I like that it holds a ton of stuff and has padded areas to hold multiple guns. What I don't like about it, is the fact that after you load up multiple guns, ammo etc. it gets really heavy. I found that I was "storing" stuff in the range bag. So even when I was only carrying a gun or two, it still weighed a lot. It is made well and I have no complaints about its quality.

Another vote for the MidwayUSA Bags. I have the (Full Size) Competition Bag and my Wife has the 'Compact Competition' bag.
They are built well, Sturdy hardware and lots of great features.
We've had are bags for over 5 Years now and except for being dirty, are looking just as good as the day we got them.
MSRP is a bit higher than others, but Midway usually has a sale going. The '1st Generation' Compact Range Bag is only $25.

Amazon.com : Smith and Wesson M&P Pro Series Tactical Range Bag, Black : Hunting Duffle Bags : Sports & Outdoors@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4118FY4eqwL.@@AMEPARAM@@4118FY4eqwL
I bought this Smith and Wesson bag off Amazon. It holds a ton. I went to the range earlier this week with four handguns, 300 rounds of .45, 200 rounds of 9mm, 200 rounds of .22, eyes, ears, various bore snakes, a speed loader, a screwdriver set (for sight adjustments), five extra mags, a roll of black duct tape (for target repair), and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.
Yeah it gets heavy if you bring so much, but it's nice to have it all in one hand when you want to do a lot of shooting.
There are two outer pockets and one inner pocket for guns. My Ruger SR1911 came in a soft case, so I leave it in the soft case and pack it in the same pocket with my M&P 22. I don't think I would want to have much more than four guns in this range bag.

I think I paid $22 at Walmart. It's got two zippered soft sided (padded) pistol pouches that detatch, and four zipper side pockets. One of the SMALLER end pockets holds 3 boxes of 50 rounds of 9mm. One of the longer side pockets has 6 mag loops. I only have 5 mags so my LULA mag loader fits in there too, and there's more room in that pocket. The main center compartment has the two pistol bags, I only have 1 pistol but there is room in there for two big sets of ear muffs also. It's thick and tough, big sturdy zippers. Two "hand handles" and a detachable shoulder strap I took off. It's small enough to be managable at the range, and I haven't found anything to put in those other two pockets yet.

I ripped the guts out of a Dell Laptop bag (didn't need all the flaps and compartments) and it works great and nobody knows what's in there. I like flying under the radar.

I found a safe guard range bag at a gun show for $40, when I got it home and unwrapped I was not happy at first. The rubber piece on the strap and the buckles felt cheap. I was feeling ripped off. Turned out that I was wrong I have been using this bag 1-2 times a week for 8 months and not the slightest bit has messed up with this bag. This bag normally weighs between 20 and 30 pounds when I go to the range with 3 or 4 pistols and ammo. I was thinking about switching to one of the tactical super dude operator bags that cost 175 bucks, but the bag I have is holding up to what I am using it for and I am happy with it.
On the other hand I got one of the pink rang bags by NcStar for my wife and it is falling apart. Pull tabs coming off, zipper breaking and so forth.

Got one of the 'large' Midway bag a few years back. Surprising quality from China(far as I know..)
When it's FULLY weighed down with alot of ammo, guns and gear, you can tear a disc out toting it.....

RANGE BAG
I use an app 13 y/o Cabela's duck hunting bag. It's in camo, has tons of pockets, a strong flat hard plastic tray bottom. The medium size is plenty big. It holds A LOT OF WT & has a good padded shoulder strap. I used it duck hunting, for years as a visiting nurse, now as a range bag. Only problem after all these years is a couple of the elastic pockets are stretched out from stuffing WAY TOO MUCH stuff in them.

There have been some nice bags listed here. I would just like to add a couple comments in general about range bags.
First, be careful about size. A bag that is too large becomes unwieldy and heavy. It's really easy to pack it full of stuff that you don't need every time. Then you can't lift the thing or it starts to tear itself apart.
Second, DON'T BUY A BLACK BAG! Yeah, I know, it's actually kinda hard to find one that isn't black, but there are a few very good reasons not to get that color.
Every try to find a small part in a black bag? Man, those things just disappear in there. It feels dumb to have to get out a flash light in broad daylight, but I've had to. So, a color like Coyote is much better.
Then, everyone has a black bag. If you ever go to a competition and set your bag down on a bench, it gets lost in the pile of other black bags. A different color helps solve that little issue right off.
As an instructor I use a range bag three or four days a week. It is a tool that is just as important as my magazines or ear protection. Here is the one I use:
LA Police Gear Jumbo Bail Out Bag
It's only $30 and is big enough to carry what I need without being too big. The Coyote color makes it easier to find stuff in the bottom. I've been using this one for over a year now and it's holding up well.

I have one of the NRA bags, too. When I take two pistols to the range, the bag is just enough to carry everything. I've tried a couple of times to take two pistols and a rifle. Ran out of space in the NRA bag. I probably would not find any bag that could carry all my stuff when I take two pistols and the rifle. I need something with wheels for all of that. Or, make several trips back and forth to the truck.

That's true enough.
However, for me, walking in and out of our apartment through the parking lot, or back and forth to the car, or our back and forth to our RV, I would prefer not to be carrying something that says HEY, I AM WALKING HERE WITH A GUN.
It's just my opinion, YMMV, as I said.
