Hey friends,

I have a brand new shield 40 that I got the other day. Right after getting it home when cycling ammo through it to get the feel of it (insert mag, chamber round, release mag, clear chamber). More often than I would like my DRT hollow points seemed to be causing issues. When chambering a round, it can get stuck crooked in the chamber and it does not completely close (see picture).

On top of this issue, upon clearing the chamber the round tends to jam itself sideways on the way out. Now I didnt make a full judgment until I cleaned and fired it (which I did today). I fired some DRT at the range and though I didnt have any jams on ejecting rounds. I did have several where the round caused the chamber to close only about 80% of the way (picture). It would fire a round, cycle to another one from the magazine and not set completely. Thinking it might be the gun not liking DRT in particular. I fired 100 rounds of FMJ through it completely perfect. No issues, no jams, nothing. Completely perfect. Bought some Remington hollows on the way out and dry cycling at home has the same results as the DRT.

I talked to someone at the range behind the counter and he was telling me it might be an issue with the way the front of the bullet is shaped and it could be a defect from the factory. Since it is a saturday and Smith customer support wont open until Monday. I figure I would take to the forums and get some opinions.

So, what do you guys think?
Has anyone had this issue?

I do not want to say none of this was my fault. But after 100 rounds of fmj flawlessly (and 2-300 i fired through on a rental before purchasing), I feel that I was not getting any jams due to operator error. I made sure I was pulling the slide ALL the way back, magazine was fully seated in the firearm etc.

thanks in advance!

I would guess that it is the bullet shape. I use only Speer Gold Dots in mine and they have no problem cycling properly. Try a different hollow point.

I seem to remember reading other stories regarding a couple of other .40 defensive rounds not loading properly like Hornady Critical Defense.

I use the PDX1in a shield/40. No issues some pistols are a bit Selective in bullet shape.

This is why you must shoot different ammo till you find what you gun likes and dislikes before you carry it. Some guns are picky, some eat everything. Don

The only ammo my 40 Shield didn't like was Magtech. Everything else went through it just fine:

American Eagle, Remington UMC, Winchester white box, also Federal HST and Hydrashok PD rounds, and Barnes TacX PD rounds.

That's the tough part of finding PD rounds that you like.....they are so expensive that if they don't function 100% then you just wasted money.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Ok....so, considering I am a relatively new shooter with few firearms in his arsenal (2...to be exact).....how often does this happen? im 100% confident no matter what I throw in my g17 it will fire...

Most work. Look for conical shapes. In my small pistols they work ( Kahr cm9 , shield 40)

DRT's are frangible & also are like 105gr. which IMO is waaay too light for a self defense load or better yet, too light to provide proper function in the shield...

Ammo used so far in my Shield 40 that works no problem is....

WWB 165 gr.
Freedom Munitions 180gr FMJ
Winchester PDX1
Federal Hydra shok 135 gr.
Federal XM40HC 180 gr. HST

I've run at least three boxes of HST through my Shield without issue.

Two possibilities I can think of are that there's something wrong with the extractor and it's catching the rim of the cartridge during loading or the ammo is too light for the recoil spring.

Please do not use DRT ammo for self-defense. It does not perform properly.

Check out anything on Dr. Robert's list instead:
Barnes XPB 140 & 155 gr JHP (copper bullet)
Speer Gold Dot 155 gr JHP
Federal Tactical 165 gr JHP (LE40T3)
Speer Gold Dot 165 gr JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 165 gr JHP (RA40TA)
Federal HST 180 gr JHP (P40HST1)
Federal Tactical 180 gr JHP (LE40T1)
Remington Golden Saber 180 gr JHP (GS40SWB)
Speer Gold Dot 180 gr JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 180 gr JHP (RA40T)
Winchester 180 gr bonded JHP (RA40B/Q4355/S40SWPDB1)

Ether try a more conventional defensive bullet or go back to your glock and use the drt bullets in it ssuming you have tested them in it .
