I'm quite new to this so hoping you all will indulge a newbie question. I recently purchased a M&P 22lr and a M&P Shield in 9mm. Bought some extra mags, extensions, Talon grips, and a nice range bag. Ammo I store separate from the weapons in a small safe. The guns I store separately in a locked range bag. I go to a local indoor range about once a week. My question is, does it make any difference, when I put the guns away for a week, if the slides are racked or unracked. I'm wondering is there any effect on the recoil springs of the slides.

doesn't really affect recoil springs anyway.

daily carry guns are almost always in a cocked/racked position without issue.

remember, springs wear out due to repeated cycling. Not from just being compressed and held in that position.

Springs go bad from up and down usage more than anything. So if u arent actually using it. U can store either way u want. Its not going to affect it as much as actually using it would.

From a safety standpoint, I store my semiautos with the slide locked back and an empty magwell. Like the others said, it doesn't affect the springs whether they are relaxed or compressed so this way I I have one more indication that the guns are unloaded when I pick it up. Makes me feel better than to pick up a gun with a closed slide where I have to rack it to ensure it's unloaded.

My guns, mostly revolvers, are stored unloaded. I have a Glock 23 and an M&P .22C that are also stored the same way with the slide forward on an empty chamber.

The guns I carry and/or keep ready for personal defense are kept with a round in the chamber. That one second it takes to cycle the action could cost you your life. You need to get to a point where you understand your weapon enough to trust it. You're safe gun handling needs to be intuitive. You need to be able to trust yourself.

I keep my guns in a safe hanging on handgun hangers. The slide is closed. I wouldn't recommend storing in a closed bag because that sounds like a recipe for corrosion.

The action slamming open and closed when operating is going to have an impact on the spring's life - not how it's stored. I would be more concerned about dirt and my dog's hair getting in the gun if the slide was left open rather than the the spring being damaged.

It doesn't effect springs one way or the other, so whichever way you go, pick one way and stick to it. Changing how you do things can lead to confusion.

Action closed, hammer down, short and long guns. No charged mags inserted. Some firearms in bore stores, the rest are not covered. Some ammo is in there too.
