Shield 9mm Cleaning 'Kit'
Hello! First post here on the S&W forum, but not new to forums in general. Though I am new to owning firearms.
My first purchase is a Shield 9mm. Before its first use I want to clean and lube it per recommendation in the manual. I have read a bit on various sites and such about the topic. Since this is an SW forum and this subsection specifically for M&P variations I thought this would be the perfect place to ask what works best for you in yours? Should I consider anything other what is listed below?
Right now I am simply looking at an inexpensive Hoppes 'kit' but replacing the aluminum rod with a Hoppes one piece stainless steel rod.
Hoppe's No. 9 Cleaning Kit with Aluminum Rod, .38/.357 Caliber, 9mm Pistol
&
Hoppe's Bench Rest 1-Piece Stainless Steel Rod, Universal Pistol
Thanks for your time and suggestions!

You don't need a lot of clean and maintain a handgun. You need a decent cleaning rod (and there is a lot of discussion about what is the best material for that), some tips and brushes, some chemicals (Hoppe's #9 is just fine) and patches. Some people like a little bit of gun grease, some people use only oil for lube. Some people swear by CLP, others prefer RemOil or whatever.
The thing with the rods is an open question. Some people like brass or aluminum as it will not scratch the bore. Some people like stainless as it is hard enough that crud won't imbed in it and therefore lessens the chance of scratching the bore.
Some people like brass brushes, some people like nylon, some people like stainless steel. If you are aware of the characteristics of each you can make an informed decision.
Personally I like brass brushes (stainless can scratch the bore if you are careless), Hoppe's #9, Tetra gun grease and RemOil. Other choices are also valid. Remember, RTFM. It's there for a reason.

Thanks for the prompt responses! I do not intend to start a debate only to see if what I have picked is sufficient and what works best for owners of the same pistol!

My cleaning kit consist of the following, all from Walmart:
- Rem Oil for cleaning the entire firearm ($8)
- Hoppe's elite oil for the high contact area ($4.50)
- Paper towels and Q-tips
- Old Toothbrush
- 5 minutes of time
Disassemble, spray rem oil, toothbrush, Q-tip, paper towel clean, roll paper towels into a small spiral and pull through the bore twice (I don't bother using a bore snake), Hoppe's elite oil on friction point/metal metal contact, reassemble and wipe off excess residues.
If you are one of those that babies their firearms, spend a few hours reading and research online about the products and equipment for firearm cleaning.
Personally, I'm lazy and like to be quick and efficient. If I have to spend more than a few minutes cleaning with a ton of products and tools, I'd probably won't shoot very much.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have got the idea.
I use Hoppe's #9, a one piece brass rod, brass brush, patches. I also use Ballistol (a great product, IMHO).
Just bought a Viper bore snake for my Shield as well. Haven't used it yet

Welcome from North Carolina
I would use a brass rod rather than stainless. Stainless is harder than your barrel and could damage it. I like M-PRO 7 cleaner and oil. They are non toxic and you can even use them inside. Their company makes Hoppes Elite

Anyways, read over the manual again. Looks like S&W recommends brass as many of of you have stated. So duly noted!
Any opinions on Outer's cleaner and oil?

I got an Uplula for my full size MP but it really helps on my new Shield mags.
As for cleaning my 9's, at times i dig in a little more and use a brass brush etc but often its a quick spray, run a boresnake thru the barrel and qtips & Rem oil to finish.
Though I'll add that my Shield is the new ported model so gets dirtier quicker so I may need to find something for a quick wipe down while spending time at the range

For a good little tutorial on handgun cleaning, do a YouTube search for "Gun Cleaning 101" by "fmgpubs". It will cover all the basics on what you really need and how little time it truly takes.

That's Hoppe's #9 lubricating oil. It should have little or no smell. What does smell is Hoppe's #9 bore cleaner, a different product: Hoppe's 9 - The Gun Care People
Both products perform their intended functions very well.
Gun guys tend to love the Hoppe's #9 bore cleaner smell. Their wives tend to hate it. So if you're married, be prepared.

Outers is a fine product. I've still got a bottle from the 50's. Hate to use it as it is a memory to my childhood.

Second on the quick to soil with the ported shield. I finally tried the bore snake - cleaned well with a single pull, and amazon had it to my place the same day for 9 bones. Just sent a wad with hoppes solvent through first, then zipped the snake after with some oil at end. We will see how it holds up, but count me impressed...

Hi there!
As far as cleaning goes, if you perform routine maintenance on your M&P then pretty much any of the cleaning products out nowadays will suffice. I've used everything from Hornady Tap One Shot to RemOil spray and they've worked great on the frame and cleaning the bore.
Some advice would be that Ebay and Amazon are your friends! compare prices and shipping everywhere and you will find an awesome setup in no time.
My current cleaning setup is Gunslick Foaming bore cleaner ($11.99 for 12oz bottle), the non-aerosol Ballistol (17.99 for the 16oz bottle), and the Ultimate Gun Bore Cleaner - which is essentially a bore snake with a lifetime warranty ($9.95). I purchased all 3 from Amazon and as a prime member I got them in 2 days flat.
With these 3 and some generic paper towels you should be good to go for over a year. I have been using this for more than a year and still have a ways to go before I re-order. You will find the aerosol versions give a lot less than what is advertised and a small amount of the non-aerosol Ballistol goes a long way!

I use Hoppes cleaning solution, Frog Lube, or Clp. I prefer brass rods over steel and brass brushes. I get the shotgun patches and cut them in half. I like bore snakes too for quick range cleanings.
