Can The Manual Safety Be Added to the 2.0?

This is just out of curiosity.

We all know that the safety can be removed from the M&P 2.0's that come with manual safety. Same goes for the original M&P.

If someone purchased an M&P 2.0 without the manual safety, can it be added or are the frames on these two guns (even with same caliber and barrel length) different? The 2.0 without the safety, still has the cut in the frame for the safety and has the plugs.

The reason I ask this is because a while back I was told the safety could NOT be added to the original M&P's if your M&P did not come with it from factory. I was wondering if it's a different case with the 2.0 and the safety is simply a drop in part or something.

Thanks

I don't think S&W would sell you the parts you need and as far as I know they can't be purchased anywhere.

the saftey just hangs off the back of the sear block and hinges on the same pin that holds the block in the frame. there is a spring loaded detent kind of thing that sits in a slot on the side of the sear block that gives the switch its click. as far as I know, on the 2.0 at least, they use the same sear block for both types but I could be wrong on that... I can't remember now from taking both of mine apart. but the simplicity of the design would make it nonsensical to make two different blocks since you can take the safeties off and they function perfectly if you plug the holes.

and they use the same plug system on the 2.0 they did on the 1.0 for models without the safety to save on frame inventory. the plugs are slightly different in the 2.0 because of the changes in the sear block but you can actually use 1.0 plugs in a 2.0 just fine with a minor amount of filing on one of the plugs. thats what I did with my 5" 2.0 FDE when I took the safety off that.

Well then he can just buy your safety that you removed. Problem and question solved. lol

It can be done and the parts are available from Speed Shooter Specialties. You just need the safety itself and the Safety detent and spring which come as a package.

I don't think this is true for the 2.0. these parts that SSS has are for the 1.0 and I am almost sure they won't work. They changed the sear block on the 2.0 so the likelihood is high that the lever and detent has changed as well. although I can't be 100% sure since I don't have a sample to compare.

This is correct with at least some of the 1.0's. you needed to have the right sear block to be able to use the safety. They had at least 5-6 different sear blocks (probably closer to 10)throughout the years as they figured it all out. I don't know if they eventually started using one type of block in the later models that worked with both because I don't have any 1.0's that had thumb safeties.

I can now confirm that the 2.0 sear block is the same in both the TS and non-TS versions and completely swap-able if you have the right parts. I just installed my thumb safety into my non-TS 4.25" that I removed from my FDE 5" gun and worked just fine.
