Just got it this afternoon and the instructions call for removal of the laser unit before cleaning. They give pretty detailed instructions on the removal of the unit, but I could not get it out of the frame. I did not force the issue and thought I would ask what the secret is to getting it out. I followed the instructions to the letter backing out the screw in the rear of the unit, and trying to push it out from the bottom of the frame hole closest to the trigger guard. I could not get it to move at all.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Had the same issue.
Called the mother ship.
Authorized return.
Took about a month.
Good luck!

You shouldn't have to remove the integrated laser for cleaning. Did you try depressing both ON buttons and then pushing it out? I have the LG489G which mounts differently so I'm guessing.

I pushed so hard the allen wrench started to bend...nothing moved. The screw would not back out from the plastic laser housing, so it wouldn't move at all.

I tried pushing the buttons too, but that did nothing.

I called S&W this AM and the first person I talked to blew me off...said to take it back where I bought it and have them look at it. I mentioned the screw not backing out at all and he told me that it was designed not to come out at all. I asked how it would ever come out if the screw was still in the threads. No answer.

I called back after I tried to remove it one last time and got a very nice woman who told me that it is a known problem and she sent a prepaid FedEx label to me to return it. Said it would be about a 3 to 4 week turn around at current levels. I am not happy to be without a brand new purchase for that long, but if they get it straightened out, it will be worth the wait.

As to removing for cleaning, it is stated in the manual to do so. They are worried about liquids getting inside of it, like cleaners etc. that would supposedly harm the electronics. They say to do this every time prior to cleaning the pistol.

If you break it, it is your problem.
Call customer service.

Already dropped off at FedEx will be back at S&W Friday.

Yep...I figured it was a mothership issue and since they paid for shipping, I just sent it back to them. I sure did not want to screw it up worse than it was.

Did you have the red or green laser? If you had the red you should see how much to upgrade to the green while they have it.

Our eyes' sensitivity peaks at around the wavelength of green light. So, you could have a red and green pointer, both with a power rating of 1mW, but the green one would look about 30 times as bright. ... It strengthens the impression that green lasers are significantly more powerful than red.

What's the difference other than color?

The green is sooooooo much brighter, and easier to see in the daylight! Mine cost $34 to upgrade to green - a heck of a good deal, and even came with a new battery!

They will only do it for a purchase that is a year or less old!

I highly recommend it, if you can - you just send them the laser, after you get a return authorization, and they send you the new one, along with another tool for installation.

Edit my previous post. The cost to me was $34, and it is done thru Crimson Trace, not S&W. The transaction was fast and easy. Good folks at Crimson Trace!

Yes. Some have said it needs to be done while under warranty.

Cost me $32. Difference is local tax.

Smooth exchange. Glad I did it.

I called them today. They were very nice and helpful.

I should have the green unit next week.
