*For those that want to say "It's a slide stop" don't waste your time commenting. Just move on to the next thread.

Saw others sanding/filing the slide stop so that they could manipulate it with their thumb. I didn't want to walk that tight rope of getting it just right so I created an extended release. The part itself only costs $10 so it was worth a try. I made a small welding jig and then sanded a bunch till I got it to look nice. I still need to fill in the gaps with some JB weld or something and blue it, but it's working great.

This picture of the jig was after a bunch of sanding obviously.

Hooray for slide releases!
Your fix seems great for you. Skill, materials, experience, patience. Nice effort. No problem with a holster?

Before I learned the sanding method I used JB Weld on a few slide stops to extend them for better leverage. I’ve done the same with a couple of mag releases. However, I don’t trust JB Weld to work permanently as an extension for other than direct inward pressure like on a mag release.

I’ll stick with sanding since I don’t have your equipment or experience. Takes me five minutes to adjust it to release easily. I once went a little too far. Another two minutes to roughen up the surfaces a little and I was all done.

Some call it the slide release, some call it the slide stop and some call it the slide lock, all are acceptable terms.

Nice idea, very innovative. It appears that you have put
a lot of thought into that Extended Slide Release.

I like the Video too. Neat simple jig also.

Thanks for Sharing. The Best to you and your Endeavors.

Here it is filled and painted. After playing with it a bit, it probably doesn't even need the finger extending beyond where the switch width originally was. Just having a bit extra to grab onto seems to be plenty. If I do anything else, it'll just be a light sanding so it looks more matte instead of so shiny.

Next thing you know, California legislators will want that gaudy loaded chamber indicator to have a flashing LED bulb inside it.
And what the heck is that glob on the back of the slide ?

Wife was having trouble racking the slide so we're trying the Recover Tactical slide assist. Definitely makes things easier to operate for her.

Nicely done. I like your diy attitude. On another forum there is a pistol where the slide release etc stick out too far in stock form. There are 2 options one can buy. I taped off all the openings, held it against the belt sander, and did the finish sanding w/ my dremel. Never even disassembled the gun. Having those levers attached to the gun made it easier to hold them than they would be by themselves. BTW we got a similar slide racker for my wife's Glock 19. It is surprisingly helpful.

I just saw this thread and see it’s 2 years old but I think still relevant. I’ve been shooting M&P’s since they first came out. My agency was one of the first agencies in the country to issue the M&P. I have always bought another slide stop/release and then I cut the tab that you put your thumb on off. I then JB Weld it on top of the tab on the pistol. It makes it double thickness and works great. Never had an issue with it.

How did you weld it? What process and material? I don't care about the slide stop, but adding an extension to the thumb saftey is vital to me. I did my early Shield's safety with JB Weld, which works but doesn't seem terribly strong or durable. Metal would be better, but after all these years no one makes an extended Shield thumb safety. I have a spare safety lever and have been considering trying to weld it up. I only have flux core and MIG available.
