New 10mm M&P

I have been looking for a 10mm Ruger GP 100 for a while. Plan B was a M&P 10mm. Today I ran across a M&P and pulled the trigger, pun intended. It’s one with a 4.265” barrel and no thumb safety.
Speaking of pulling the trigger, I’ve just dry fired it so far. What I’m seeing is a very long, gritty take up, followed by a gritty let off and little over travel. I know it’s not a target pistol, but I’d like it to have bit better trigger.

I have a whole bunch of .40 ammo. The only .40 I have to shoot it in is a 4006. Wondering if, someone made a .40 barrel for the 10mm, if perhaps it would function with only the barrel change, or perhaps barrel and recoil spring change?
I know some guns will fire .40 in a 10mm by just depending on the extractor to headspace the round. Not wanting to go there.

I’m also thinking seriously about putting a reflex sight on the gun. Gonna try it out with the iron sights first. Recommendations for a reflex sight? Don’t need the most expensive, most tactical thing on the market. Something serviceable. Not sure about 3 or 6 MOA? Interested in your thoughts.

I want to get a .357 SIG barrel if someone starts to make one. Firing a .40 in it is up in the air.

Some red dot sights have a lifetime warranty, others don't. For a 10mm slide, I'd go with something with a lifetime warranty. I got a used Burris Fastfire 3, which has a lifetime warranty for my M&P 10mm. Still waiting for my background check to pass to bring it home. I'd get a Fastfire 4 next time. Maybe for my Glock 40 longslide.

Agree concerning the barrels. Someone would have to manufacture barrels chambered for the .40 before I’d try it.

For other manufacturers, a 10mm magazine is also used for .40 and .357 SIG. Might just be a barrel and recoil spring change. That's all it is for my 1911a2 Rock Island 10mm. Likely the same for the Glock 40 long slide.

Might be a long time before anyone makes a barrel.

Eventually the aftermarket will kick in, just as it did with the 10mm Glocks, and you’ll be able to purchase “drop-in” tubes in all the 10mm-derivative calibers: 40, .357Sig, maybe even 9x25 Dillon.

I’m interested in the no-safety/4.6” M&P. But no RDS for me. I just want to be able to swap-in “normal” height night sights, like the fixed Trijicons on my Glocks or like the Novak’s on my 3rd Gens.

Yep, likely only the barrel.

I’m interested in the no-safety/4.6” M&P. But no RDS for me. I just want to be able to swap-in “normal” height night sights, like the fixed Trijicons on my Glocks or like the Novak’s on my 3rd Gens.

The front sight may interchange with the standard height. I’ll have to measure to tell for sure. The rear sight is going to be a problem from its looks it is a much narrower dovetail than the standard S&W rear. Looks closer to a Kimber cut. But, knowing S&W, it will be proprietary. The tall sights were sort of a turn off for me also, but after handling and playing with one fora bit, I think I can live with them. Not sure if they are going to be a problem for a holster. Have to check that out.

Regarding the rear sight dovetail, on other gun boards, I’ve read where guys wanting to put in a standard height sight are having to narrow it by grinding or milling to get it to fit.

So yeah, if S&W decides to offer standard sights, they’ll be proprietary.

The best bet here is likely going to be someone like Dawson Precision stepping up and offering replacement sights. I suspect a lot of owners are going to want to go with the optics and there may not be a lot of demand for replacements, especially if the 10mm is the only gun using the tall sights.

Well, well. I looked at the Dawson site and it looks like they already offer standard height and co witness height sights for core guns. I suspect the dovetails are the same as the 10mm. Don’t know if they have night sights, but they have FO in several configurations.

KKM makes a .40 cal-to-.357Sig drop in barrel that fit my M&P Compact 2.0 (w/4" barrel). Shop | KKM I don't see a 10mm-to-.40 cal barrel, but you can call them. Who knows? They may have one in the works, or might use your order as the impetus to build that product.

My Gen 3 Glock 29 runs .40cal beautifully with only the barrel change and no recoil spring change. KKM made my conversion barrel and if I were in your shoes, I’d ask them if they plan to make them for the M&P 10mm. The more folks that ask, the more it helps them to gauge interest.

Barrels are literally what they do… so it seems to me that they likely will.

I’m definitely with you… the extractor is an absolutely key component of any/every semiautomatic and it’s not designed to hold improper ammo and it’s no help to any extractor to slam it’s tip in to rounds because they didn’t stay where you had hoped.

If I’m stuck on a deserted island with only a 10mm pistol and .40 S&W ammo, okay. However I’m not, so none for me, thanks.

You can get rid of the grit by by doing some targeted polishing if you don't mind taking it apart. You can also smooth it out more by rounding the striker block.

Other than changing sights, I’ve never done much work on M&P’s or Shields. I presume there is a utube video done by someone knowledgeable?

I went through more than a few budget reflex sights on one of my 9mm's. I discovered a lot of the budget red/green dots can't take the recoil of being mounted to a 9mm pistol slide, let alone 10mm. They might be ok if mounted on an AR or PCC. The only budget reflex sight I found that is still working today is a TruGlo TruTec...the other 3 I tried either broke or couldn't hold zero. I tend to have bad luck sometimes though lol.
