After 13K plus rounds, my M&P 2.0 9mm compact (4 inch) no longer locks back on last round. New mag springs, multiple mags, verification of proper grip and multiple shooters were the troubleshooting steps.

Gunsmith at the range suggested changing the slide stop assembly as the next step. I ordered this: Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 Compact & M&P45 M2.0 Slide Stop: MGW

The new part I ordered is the just the blued steel as shown in the image. The original has a spring on the left side that is not easily removable. It is like the spring has some of the blued steel pressed around the spring to lock it in place.

If I am good at the links, here will be an image that shows the spring I am trying to describe, though on a slide stop meant for the 1.0 model.

How do I get this spring from the old part to the new part? I found an old closed thread on another forum that said the 2.0 does not use that spring and does not come with one (but my old part has it) so I am concerned that I am misreading the other thread.

My 4.25” and 5” M2.0 Full-size 9mm don’t have that spring which appear to tension the slide stop in the downward position. My two 4” M2.0 Compact 9mm both have that spring on the slide stop. I don’t really know what function it serves but my full-size pistols work fine without that spring.

The 2.0s don’t use the spring. The other difference is the tab that actually locks the slide. In the 1.0s, it’s flat. On the 2.0s, it’s rounded to match the notch in the slide. The 2.0s use a detent to hold the slide lock in place.

Based on that, I think you misread that thread. Can’t explain why your original one had the spring. Perhaps you can post a pic of it?

On the left (bottom as rotated in the attachment screen) is the original, replacement part on the right/top. The spring is bent to the center as a result of my efforts to remove it.

Here is a picture of an identical 2.0 compact that is about 3 years newer. It does have the spring.

What's the spring called (I can't find it on the Brownells' parts diagram) and how do I remove it to put it on the new part?

*edit - add photos being disagreeable, but at least I can add attachments.

As far as I know, the spring is not sold separately. It's part of the slide lock in the 1.0. Again, I can't explain why your original 2.0 slide lock would have the spring. Perhaps you should call S&W.

I would simply install the new one (no spring) and then function check.

For function checking I would install the new lock, then, without installing the slide, press the lock up and down to make sure it "clicks in". With the lock down, insert an empty mag. It should push the lock up. Try this several times. Then with the lock down, reinstall the slide. Hold the slide back and lift the slide lock to verify it locks. Then rack the slide to ensure the lock drops and the slide move forward into battery. Now reinsert the empty mag and rack the slide. It should lock back.

My 9mm 2.0 Compact slide stop assembly does have this spring. Yes, I know it's needs a cleaning :)

Do you know what year yours was made?
I got it from Primary Arms as part of a brand new shipment about a year and a half ago. They were out and then they got them in and I got the email notice.

I reassembled without the spring. Passed the function checks Saudade described with flying colours. Should be able to make a brief stop at the range tomorrow for a true test. I'll report back.

I was thinking it's probably not strictly necessary. Like the sear disconnect lever.

What vacuum cleaner bag do you store it in...?

Cheers!

P.S. All kidding aside, I can't imagine a slide interior in that condition outside a 5000 round torture test!

Answers provoke more questions.....

Looking at the MGW site: Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 slide stops

I see both variants for the 2.0, one with and without the spring. Since it doesn't specific size, I assume it's the full size. The one marked "Compact" does not have the spring.

It gets better.... The one on the right (no spring) "Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 9mm & .40 S&W Slide Stop Assembly" says "Models Fit: M&P M2.0 9mm & .40 S&W Models. WILL NOT fit the compact or .45 caliber models.

The one on the left "Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 Slide Stop Assembly" says "Models Fit: Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0" (note, there's no caliber specified)

The Compact one in the middle says "Models Fit: M&P M2.0 Compact 9mm, .40 S&W & .45 ACP Models, M&P M2.0 Full-Size .45 ACP Models
WILL NOT fit the full-size 9mm or .40 S&W caliber models.

So it appears that full size can use either the spring or no spring one. Yet the Compact and .45 are unique to those models/caliber.

Even "funnier" is that the fullsize and Compact 1.0s take the same slide lock.

My *wag* is that the spring was included as part of the initial production. Once S&W realized it wasn't necessary due to the detent, they dropped it out in later production years.

Still, it's becoming more challenging order spare parts when terminology changes, version changes, even small updates occur. Don't even get me started on my p320.

Short range session today. 100 rounds with no problems, I short loaded all the mags for testing so about 20 slide locks backs.

Since this is my IDPA pistol and not a carry pistol, (too many rounds on this one to fully trust) I'm content to declare it working.

Thanks for all the help!

Saudade - you went down the same rabbit hole I did before ordering the replacement slide lock. I'm glad I did not notice the spring issue before ordering because I would have talked myself into ordering the "wrong" part, though who knows if that would have been a problem.

It's seen some action :D I do need to give it a scrubbin. Runs fine though lol.

I should've thought of this before. I pulled out my spare parts collection and my spare also has this spring.

I got it from FREESTONE ARMORY . This fella KNOWS M&Ps like the back of his hand.
