I'll be the first to admit that, while Smith has always been my first choice in wheelguns, I have not been a fan of their semi-autos since the 3rd Gen days. For years, if it was polymer, it was Glock. If it was metal, it was Sig or CZ. And I was content. Right up until I laid hands on the new Competitor.

Funny how that happens isn't it?

Granted, I've been following this pistol ever since I first heard about it and the initial reviews were fairly good, And it seemed to be what I was looking for having decided to start shooting IDPA and Steel this coming summer. But it wasn't until I actually handled it that I decided to lay down the cash.

And in classic fashion, I cleaned it, and immediately screwed something up.... The Takedown tool was unbelievably tight. Tight enough that I managed to wallow out the hex head channel and damage the polymer "lever" before getting it free to change the grip.

Here's when the great customer service comes in. I called Smith's CS line, looking to buy a replacement, and they don't even have them available yet. So the CS Rep (wish I remembered his name) went to the production line and grabbed one out of the parts bins, then overnighted it to me free of charge! That's amazing customer service.

The Wife and I hit the range the following Sunday and proceeded to put a bit over 400 rounds through it, and some of the local Team shooters put another 200 through it as well. It happily ran everything we fed it (115/124/147 grain ball, some random hollowpoints, and even some 90 grain frangible stuff).

The only issues anybody had were one of the team guys dropping the mag inadvertently when shooting left handed, disappointment that the mags were just 17 rounds with the extended baseplates, and surprise that, despite the slide cuts, the pistol was not ported.

Having just recently become a fan of red dots (amazing what they can do for aging eyes), and a brand new M&P convert, I'm looking to add an optic that can be used for both IDPA and Steel Challenge. I make no pretense that I'm going to be anything more than average, but I would like something with a good sized screen (I'm shooting a CMore RTS2 in Rimfire Challenge for reference). Additionally, are the mounting plates that come with it satisfactory or should I order a C&H once I decide on the optic?

Congratulations on a beautiful pistol. I'm glad to hear that it is all working out for you.
It's good to hear that someone actually cleaned and oiled their new M&P and took the time to get familiar with it's operation and take down procedure before shooting it. Too many people don't read the instructions, don't clean or oil it before use and wonder why they're having problems.
I've been considering purchasing a Competitor in the two finish and your experience has helped to push me even harder. It's only a matter of time.

I purchased the M&P 10mm a few months back. I would highly recommend C&H. The plastic plates did not work for me even with loc-tite and the proper torque.

I was able to shoot one at our monthly ASI match. A member in our squad had one and was gracious enough to let me shoot a few rounds through it.

Was impressed with the trigger on this particular gun, and was able to keep all the shots in the head of an IDPA target at 10yards with the factory iron sights.

Gun felt comfortable in the hand. If I was in the market, I might just consider this.

Is that the Metal Competitor, or the Metal Competitor 2 ?

Been doing my research and found a "New" Metal Competitor 2. Wondering if there's a difference between them.

I'm talking about the Performance Center. SKU:13718 and SKU:13199 or are these two completely different from yours ???

Update. "Seems" I may have found part of my question. Different number -different colors. It must have just came out ?? new color combo ?? Was hoping the Competitor 2 might be a ported version. Oh well.... eventually maybe.

New question. Is that wide mag well removeable so you can use regular M&P OEM mags or is this going to be a mag specific handgun (being it comes with 4 mags) ?

Must be it's new enough, priced a bit high (for some people). Can't find out much for any real "Hands On" info, mostly speculation. If it is mag specific, the best time to order OEM mags, is when you order the weapon...

Being you have one in hand, I might get some better info. I AM going to get one through my LGS, that's a given.

I have the two-tone 13718 sku. I actually prefer it to the all tungsten colored variant. I blame my love for two tone pistols on those 80’s magazine covers with all the 2-tone guns. 😆

The mag well is easily removable. They were thinking when they designed this one. Just pivot the takedown tool, pull it out, slide off the mag well, put the provided “standard” takedown tool in place, and regular length mags fit flush. The 4 provided mags just have hollow extended baseplates for use with the magwell. (No additional capacity.) So far, I have not been able to find these baseplates for purchase, but I figured I’d probably just order some +3 capacity aftermarket ones anyway.

Ran another 200 rounds through it today and I’m still quite happy with it. I need to pick-up a good IDPA holster for it and an optic.

Gave me what I needed to know. Thanks for the info. Mag well will be the first thing to go (into storage bin), might come in handy later. I've got OEM M&P mags coming out my ears. Next, the mag release will get a good look at, nice it comes with a stock standard short one just incase.

Now, it's which one of the two models I'll get, IF they have both. I'm leaning to the Tungsten, but like the two tone too. Bottom line is the one that's instock. :) Then, if/when they do a ported, Ill go for opposite of what I get first.

Again, Thanks for the help.

With these cuts already, you’d think they have ports already planned.

Agree. I thought that when I first saw the "slits" on both sides of the front of the slide. Those Top Slots, maybe barrel cooling. ????

I have played with different barrel heat on my rifles and different "sweat" spots...

Gotta give them "boys" at S&W on the M&Ps credit. They're keeping us on our toes. :)

LGS has a couple on the way now.

Again, Thanks for the info.

Still waiting, decided on both when they come in. Just waiting on the Manufacture getting them to the distributors, to get them to the Dealers.

Picked up an SKU 13194 all Metal. Nice little tack driver, very happy. VERY nice trigger right out of the box.

Was real lucky and picked up the first new M&P FPC 9. Very impressed with that too. Takes the same M&P FS mags, comes with a 17 and two 23 round mags. Added foldable iron sights (staying minimal) and a QD sling. Makes for a nice addition to my M&P collection. FS Hand gun, Foldable Carbine, same mags, same ammo.

Love the look of these. I'm planning on picking one up this week online. Unfortunately I've seen -more than I like- of less than stellar reviews and comments on them since I've been looking at them. Which makes me hesitant.... But I'll probably still give it a chance.

I'm glad there aren't any barrel ports and I think when guys say, "Why didn't SW port it?!" They don't really understand how many "competition" classes that would bump you out of! - It would really limit you in USPSA atleast, and you aren't going to be that competitive in Open... To me this shines as a Carry Optics gun (cant comment on IDPA classes as I dont shoot IDPA).

To me, smart move with the slide lightening cuts, and doubles as already giving guys the option to port the barrel without the added cost of having to also have the slide cut for it.

Being it's so new and STILL hard to get, "early" reviews are never that great by the few that might have one and there's the ones that have only SEEN or watched a video about them NEVER actually handling one, but complain anyway. I don't mind the actual videos of the "pros & cons", but I can make my own mind up and never had any real issues with THEIR cons. #1, I ALWAYS check out the weapon before I lay down any cash. #2 I NEVER buy on line.

I listened to all the complaints from all the other model "Fan Boys" about them (M&Ps). Got a great deal and bought my first FS M&P-9 around 20+ years ago and never looked back. I now have a collection of M&Ps in ALL the calibers except the 40s. It was a little too snappy and they were having some issues with the frames (the 9s are built off the 40s frame). I've had zero issues with any of them.

I'm old school, clean it, lube it, shoot it. I got board trying to run my first one into the ground, didn't remove the storage lube, just shot it. Ran all kinds of 9 ammo through it, dirty, clean, it just kept going (I DO NOT recommend doing that by any means). Gave it a good scrubbing to get rid of the storage lube, gave it a proper lube and went back at it. Then, the collection grew from there. Just picked up the new all Metal M&P and it's great. ALL have had a good break-in, reliable, dependable and run great. Being "Old School", if I shoot it, I clean it.

So, no second thoughts about buying this newest one, it never crossed my mind. It's New, means Fresh Tooling, THAT'S the biggest thing (for me).

AND, lets not forget. "Most" weapons are only as capable as the person behind them. ;)

Just the opposite for me and my S&W M&P 10mm 2.0. I've had no issues with the S&W #1 plate and my Holosun 507C red dot (used the Holosun long screws with fresh blue Loctite and proper torque). I don't believe that you would have any issues with a 9mm and the S&W plates. However, C&H does make excellent plates for $50 if you choose to go that route. Good luck, and enjoy!

BTW: A few years back, prior to the S&W Metal Competitor, I decided to go the SIG route for competition. I chose the SIG P320X5 Legion for Limited class, no red dot and no ports. Ports are not really needed on these heavier pistols. I probably would have chosen the S&W if they were around then, but I'm extemely happy with the SIG.

I am asking for this gun on Fathers Day. I will probably buy early and look for reimbursement :D. I have the Metal 4.25" and absolutely love the damn thing. Other than 2 of my 1911's this has been my best (reliability/accuracy) gun out of the box. I am preparing to start shooting a few low level matches at my LGC and would use the Competitor or a 1911.

FINELY !!!

You are quite welcome. Glad to be of assistance.
With these cuts already, you’d think they have ports already planned.

FINELY have it !!! Had some bad weather running through here, set things back a little. Tornadoes popping up all over the place last Friday, more slated for this afternoon.

Anyway. It's a DANDY !!! Cleaned, lubed and put 50 rounds through it with ZERO issues. Another M&P tack driver right out of the box! Cleaned it again, dumped the Magazine Well Flare (never needed help swapping mags before). It WILL take any 17 round M&P Mag like you said. Love the flat trigger, Extended Mag Release wasn't a problem, so I left it extended (it's more than enough out of my way), no "bumping" issues, but easy to get to dumping a mag and reloading. Those rough grips are perfect for my hands. Sights are dead on (for me) coming up to aim, no future plans for any red dot sights. Also works just fine shooting left handed. I'm also ambidextrous. Not much if any slide "slop" like some other's were complaining about. Still planning on the two tone when one becomes available. :)

I see there is a M&P Competitor SKU-11710 45 ACP, ported, with a polymer lower that looks just like the "9" in black. Must be just out or about to be. Added that to my list. :) My M&P 45acps are great, figure this would be another nice addition to my collection.

Now, back out for more break-in. Thanks again for the help. Stay Safe. :)

Congratulations on your new Competitor. I've wanted one since it was first introduced but have held off for a while after hearing about the slide slop problems that another forum member has had.

In the meantime I've been doing a little research and just about everyone has been giving it rave reviews, so much that I decided to get one.

I finally found a two tone at a good price and it should be at my FFL tomorrow. I will be checking the slide slop at the FFL before I sign on the dotted line.

Hearing that yours is working out so well is good news. Now I feel better about my decision. That bad weather that you've been having must have come in my direction. Storms, possible tornados, and hail are all possibilities in the weather forecast tonight and tomorrow. Hope it misses me.

PS If you are still looking for a two tone, PM me. The store that I ordered mine from still has them in stock.

Thanks. And thanks for the offer too.

I gave it a good going over at my LGS, it was plenty tight, locks up tight and shoots great. Hasn't been ammo picky. I'm at and to the point of running it till it starts having any issues (like I do with all of my weapons) and see how far I can "push it".

A little slop isn't always bad thing on semi autos, means they won't be so ammo picky like some of the "tight" high $$$ end models. I have an old Colt Combat Commander 1911 (first handgun I bought in the 70's when I turned 21 and legal age to own) that rattled like a bucket of loose bolts and has always been reliable, with a little work, hits what I shoot at. It's semi retired after all the competitions it's been through and kept me at the top of the pack. :)

Tried a few of my friends high end models, never really cared for them. Ran into the S&W MP line and never looked back. Also, some of my friends having problems, were more shooter problems, not the firearms.

Thanks for the offer, but my LGS does a good job finding what I'm after and I get good prices. Been with a few "local" LGSs for decades now. I'll get a photo from Shot Show and a "You want one of these ?" If I do, it's ordered on the spot and I'll get fresh first run when they start distributing them. Missed Shot Show this year with what's been going on, other wise I'd have both by now. My two tone is coming, just waiting to fill a back-order to get it moving.

The 4 mags (I believe) that come with the Competitor are "Purpose" built with that extra polymer length on the bottom. They are less prone to damage being dropped during a timed mag swap with that extra polymer to absorb some shock. JMHO.

Good luck with yours, keep us posted. Glad to help. Safe Shooting. :)

Real nice guns up above this post, especially the OP. I hope they shoot as well as they look. I'm in the process of looking for leather for a couple guns, especially the 27-9. I hope your gun shoots as well as it looks! Great find. Enjoy the snot outta it!
