Default Why I like my Shield 1.0

I still like my shield 1.0 and since I live in Calif the shield plus is now available on the roster. I recently looked at one and was about to pull the trigger on a new purchase, however the one I held was sold and more were coming in next week. I went home and looked closely at my 1.0 with the extended 8 round magazine. The grip fits my hand perfectly, the Plus was basically the same grip length as my 1.0 with the 7 round "flush" mag. I do not shoot nearly as well with the flush mag inserted. I do like the 'plus' versions 10 round capacity, but have decided to keep what I have. To me it is better to CC what you shoot well VS. simply having two more rounds. Not everyone will agree with that thinking, so what ever floats YOUR boat. For reference the 1.0 with the 8 round extended mag measures 4-3/4" high, the dimensions given on the S&W site all appear to use the specs for the flush magazines and that makes it hard to compare apples and oranges!

I guess I have smaller hands. I like the grip and feel of my Shield 1.0 with the 7 round magazine and it conceals better than the 8 round mag. I installed a Magguts +2 spring kit on all my 7 round mags. That gives me 9 +1 rounds. Good enough. I also added Talon grips to it. Makes a world of difference.

My Shield 1.0 is reliable and a MagGuts +1 in the 8 round mag gives me 10 with one in the chamber. A Houge grip sleeve gives it a great fit in my hand. No need to change, I'll stick with something with well over 2K rounds through it that's never missed a beat.

My shield 1 is going now where, Funny thing about this gun is I could never shoot it well and if someone would have offered my 150 bucks it would have been theirs. One day at a buddies shooting a lot of different pistols and we were packing up when I remembered the shield and brought it out telling my buddy I can't hit squat with this gun. Funny I couldn't miss for trying. Ever since I have shot it well, we have become very good friends.
I shoot it better with the 7 round and the 8 round catches on the bottom of my grip hand when I try to do a reload so it won't drop free, the 7 round drops right out.
Carry on....

I don't believe you're missing anything over the Plus. S&W QC has gone downhill since the 1.0 Shields, IMHO. The 1.0 wasknownw for being a solid reliable carry price, and IMHO, the Plus is not. I've owned a 1.0 in 40s&w, two 1.0 in 9mm, two Shield 45s, and the Shield Plus. I don't trust and will not carry the Shield Plus. The gun you shoot well and have confirmed is reliable is better than the current flavor of the month that may or may not be as good.

While I still own a 1.0 in 9mm, I haven't carried it in years. It never did really fit my hand well. I purchased the Shield 45 Performance Center when it was first released released as my first 45acp primarily because there was a $100 rebate during that time. I still carry it to this day, and I'm not even a fan of 45acp. The size is perfect, it fits my hand well, and it points naturally. From the first time I picked it up, I could point the it and the sights would be aligned perfectly everytime. I own a Hellcat, Shield Plus, and several higher capacity subcompact, but, like you, I'm not going to give up a good gun because I'm worried about 2 or 3 more rounds. If I feel like I need more ammo, I'll carry an extra magazine.

100%
Having 2 extra rounds to miss with just endangers more innocents.

We should all be carrying 1. What we shoot best, 2. What we carry well, 3. All the opinion ****... in that order.

I notice no difference in how I shoot nor carry my Shield Plus vs my Shield PC 1.0* (*Note: I replaced the ported PC barrel with a non ported barrel. I did not like the ported barrel).

The internal trigger in each is on par. Different, but on par in functional quality. Though the trigger in each is noticeably better than the 1.0 non-PC. I am also a fan of the new external trigger (I call it the trigger shoe, but just found out that's not what y'all call it).

I'm also relieved to not have to deal with the Talon Grip Tape. While it works well and is nice when it's fresh, it degrades and needs to be replaced. And it's annoying between the time it needs to be replaced and the time when I actually replace it. I really like the 2.0 textured grip.

I also appreciate the extra capacity. Though I get that's a non issue to those who live in a 10 max capacity state.

As for quality... I can't argue that QC of today is not what QC of yester-year was. But it hasn't slipped to the point the new releases aren't safe to carry.

Default Why I like my Shield 1.0

The 1.0 shield is a great reliable gun, mine has over 2500 rounds without a hiccup. That said the grip texture is too slick, the trigger is horrible at 7lb. Mine sits in a safe and never comes out.

The Shield plus is better in every way, better grip texture, a little wider, a way better trigger and more rounds.

Op you know Pearce makes a pinky holder for the 10 round mags.

Interesting points.

With respect to the OP - I suppose if 10 rounds is your limit then yes - you get the extended mag grip with the single stack shield under 10 rounds. That would be 8+1 = 9 rounds. Otherwise you are at 13 for the next extended mag size up in the double stack = won't work in CA.

Markmiela, thank you for that. I checked out the pierce extension and now I will take a second look at the shield plus. Thats what I like about this forum, always great info from like minded enthusiasts!

I know the feeling... I've been carrying a Performance Center M&P40 Shield 1.0 since 2021 when I happened upon it completely by chance online at a fantastic price, and I love it.

Whats your latest purchase? "guns/accessories"-20210107_132530-jpg

Nowadays it's actually my warm weather carry, otherwise I carry its big brother the M&P40c 1.0.

I like it so much that I've modified it so it's more fun and pleasant to shoot as well.

My Shield 9 1.0 is one of three in my EDC rotation going on 9 years now. Only additions were TruGlo Tritium Pro sights, CT LL-801G green laser/light, and Talon Black Rubber Grips. I carry 8+1 and 2 spare 8 round mags. Did a little gentle hand polishing to remove some tiny burrs from the manufacturing process, resulting in a smooth take up and a pull of just over 5 lbs. Never had an issue of any kind so far and don't think I'll ever part with it. Incredibly accurate given it's size.

I have a 1.0 Shield (and a 1.0 Compact and FS). Since we're still under a 10 round mag limit here in CA, I see no need to replace my Shield with a Shield Plus (or 365, Hellcat or other newly added micros to the CA roster). I do have magguts +1 in some of my mags.

If/When the time comes that mag limits are gone, I'll consider it.

I inherited a Shield 1 in 9mm. It came with Two 8rd. Mags and a 7rd. It shoots and carries pretty good for me. I’ve been carrying and shooting 2” J-Frames for so long it takes me a while to get my hold and finger placement on the trigger. I just need more time at the Range to make it natural that I grip it correctly. I don’t see the need for any larger mags. With 24 rounds (3 mags + 1) and a J-Frame in my pocket.

Just got back from local shop, put the shield plus on layaway until my birthday. It was still in the shipper box to the dealer. Wow, what a difference in the trigger! Came home and shot the 1.0 until it started raining. I am sure the new one I will shoot even better. I also had a chance to handle the sig 365, it is just too small in MY hand. If I need something smaller than the shield, I will just carry my sig 238 for THAT particular occasion.

Love my 1.0, especially after converting it to 4” with a PC slide and extended safety lever.

I purchased a Shield 1.0 early on and then did an Apex trigger kit and Ameriglo sights on it. As far as I'm concerned, the trigger is better than any of the later iterations of the Shield. I have had mine for sale at a local shop with several 7-8 Rd mags for months and it has not sold for some reason. Everyone seems to want the Shield Plus I guess.

I inherited the Shield 9. I like it OK but I think I shoot my Glock 26 better. The lower capacity of the Shield doesn’t bother me, it came with 2 8rd mags and 1 - 7. I left the Glock home for the winter and brought the Shield to Florida. I need a little more practice. It seems I shoot it to the left a little more than the thicker guns I shoot, including J-Frames. Being thin It carries better than the Glock.

I find the 365 grip is too small around for my long skinny fingers.

I'm just popping in again to say that I feel sorry for you all. Clearly, having 8 (7+1) or 9 (8+1) rounds rather than the invented and pulled out of thin air EXTREMELY arbitrary 11 (10+1) rounds of 9mm will get you killed. It's clearly not enough, and you should spend $450-$600 for the gun and even more in spare mags by buying a Shield Plus or a P365. Yes, pay $450-$600 + $30 per spare mag for just to have 2 more rounds because you need to reach the magical number of 10 edc rounds. If you don’t, you won't live to see another day.

I never could understand that. Need for high capacity gun. Just get another mag. That’s why everyone says one of the reasons a semi is better than a revolver, easy fast reloads.

I already stated it is not about 10 rounds, it is about the trigger, the texture on the grip, the two extra rounds are a bonus. The slightly wider grip fits My hand even better as well. Not everyone will agree with this thinking, so what ever floats YOUR boat.

I’m thinking I like the way the. Fatter guns fit me. Even with the Hogue slip on grip on the Shield I don’t seem to shoot it as good as I’d like to.

I had and carried a Shield 2.0 9mm for some time. Never really felt undergunned with the 7-8 rounds but I wasn't completely satisfied with the grip fit.

After the Shield + came out I spent a year considering it. Handled a few in shops and liked the feel and fit of the grip. Finally broke down nd bought one. No regrets about it at all. I carry with the 10 round mag backed by the extended magazine. As far as quality, my plus is fully equal to my prior 2.0.

For those who are satisfied with the single stack 1.0 or 2.0 press on, it will serve you well. Each of us pays our money and takes our chances.

This is where I am with it. I carry the Shield 9 when I'm more concerned about concealment. It has 9+1 in the gun and I have other mags with the Magguts extension for spares. If I want more capacity I'll just carry my M2.0 Compact or one of my CZ's.

After all these years, I still carry my M&P Shield 9 (1.0) with my N8 Tactical IWB holster along with my 442 in my pocket.

Even with the evolution of the 2.0 Shield 9 offering enchantments and more capacity, I have yet to be motivated to replace it.

The first S&W I shot was my friend's Shield 1.0 and it got me looking at S&W M&Ps.

I found the trigger on the Shield 1.0 wasn't bad but wasn't the best. The mag catch button was kind of hard to manipulate. That was something we both noticed.

The M&P 5.7 / M2.0 / Shield Plus don't seem to have that issue with the mag catch as they are easy to manipulate.

Out of the box the Shield 1.0 seemed to shoot left a tad. I was hitting the bullseye right away at 10 yd but felt it could use a slight adjustment. I looked at my Shield Plus iron sights and can see the factory moving that rear sight to the rightmost edge of the slide. I noticed the front sight favored the right side on both the Shield Plus and M&P 2.0, so I wonder if their process for installing the front sight pushes it too much to the right causing it to shoot left a hair more at 10 yd.

BTW, Apex makes a nifty part that replaces that obnoxious Loaded Chamber Indicator and still leaves a perfect visual inspection port.

The good news is you don’t have the equally obnoxious magazine caution stamped on the slide.
