I am new to this forum and thought there were some comments about the new Bodyguard recoil springs but I can't find them. I apologize up front for my incompetence.

I disassembled my pistol and when I went to reassemble it the recoil spring is jammed and will not compress. Is this a known problem with a solution? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

There are several threads running on this. If you look at the front of the spring it probably is over ridding the flange or lip.

If you push the end of the spring back behind the flange and get it to stay there it should go right together .

I've learned, thanks to a post from Dr.Rich here, to just take a screwdriver and "pop" the errant last loop of the coil back under the recoil spring flange and the assembley will slip right back in place with no problem.

I'm going to call/write the factory and see if I can get a new spring, when I get around to it.

They probably have got thousands of them that have the problem. It takes time to get a new one redesigned, made and in the pipeline. Some people who say they have contacted S&W about and have been sent a new one say it's the same. Which is why I haven't bothered to call yet. The "pop it back in" system works for now. Maybe in a couple of months.

One would thing S&W could easily rectify this problem, so what gives?

S&W is indeed aware of the problem and the current solution is to send out, free, another recoil spring. Unfortunately at this time, they are the same as the one that came with the gun. I received my second, requested recoil spring and, with a little modification, it now works, too. I put the original one back in the gun and will save this 2nd one "just in case."

I appreciate the comments and I did find some threads on the topic. Frustrating as it appears the recoil spring assembly is a weak link.

However, my issue is the assembly won't compress. It's not an issue of placing the front in the slide but the entire assembly is locked solid. I can compress the larger spring as indicated in other threads but it doesn't free up the entire assembly.

I did call S&W this morning and they said they would send a new assembly - didn't even ask me any questions. Guess I will play the waiting game to see if it arrives and if the new one is any better.

That's the same issue I was having. The recoil spring assembly felt like a solid rod and would not budge. After reading Dr. Rich's post, I examined the end of the assembly I was able to see that the end of the coil was sticking out. That was acting like a wedge to keep the guide rod from contracting. Once I got the end of that coil back under the end cap of the guide rod it went right back into the slide and compressed easily. As long as it's in place in the slide, it won't come out, but when you remove it, the end of that coil is able to slip out. It's just a very tiny amount.
