I had to search and go through about 10 different threads on here to make up all the answers i needed before buying and installing the PRS on my rifle.

First I bought the A2 Buffer Tube
DPMS Receiver Extension Buffer Tube AR-15 A1/A2 Stock

Next Called Smith & Wesson and ordered the Buffer Tube insert
1 (800) 331-0852 ask for (part number 432270000)
--- My only issue was it took me a month and half to get it. I have not looked into it but not sure why the standard buffer with the build in extension couldn't work. maybe someone else can give some input on this.

Then the PRS itself. These are scattered around at various prices. Be sure to get the AR10 version
--- The AR15 will fit but the cheek rise gets in the way of allowing the charging handle to pull all the way back.

Picture of my rife before hand.

Laid out with the all the components

Removed the stock the spring and buffer

Remove the Buffer tube. This wasn't hard other than they stamped the castle nut from Factory.

Install the A2 buffer tube. ( be careful when taking stock tube out the buffer retainer will jump out keep a hand on it so you do not lose it. Then besure to press it down with you install the new tube.

Putting the PRS on the tube was fairly easy just twisting sliding hitting. but went right into place.

Remove the rear butt pad and see the exposed hole for the screw.

And thats it!!!!

Feel free to ask anything, always happy to help.

and if anyone has any other suggestions post up.

Really hope this helps a few others.

Great details and thoughts Jones424. I have the Magpul PRS on my M&P10. I use the Enidine 308 AR-Restor rifle buffer with the original M&P10 carbine spring. When I first installed the PRS stock, I used the DPMS LR-308 rifle spring. The DPMS spring was too strong and the rifle short cycled. The original M&P10 carbine spring is about .75" shorter than the DPMS and the spring wire is a thinner gauge than the DPMS. I have also added an SLR-DA7 adjustable gas block to fine tune cycling. Please note that I do not believe that Smith & Wesson supports or encourages the modifications that I have listed (and I do not fault them for it). Also, I do not encourage anyone to attempt the modifications I have listed without the service or oversight of an experienced gunsmith. That being said, these modifications work effectively in my M&P10.

Yes I also stuck with the factory M&P10 buffer and spring just used the spacer i talked about above.

Mounted my M&P 10 w/ a PRS Magpul stock with no such spacer.

Works perfectly fine.

I really think the idea of using a spacer is an urban myth everyone falls for.

Assuming you use good to high quality ammo, no spacer is needed.

This may be true I like you said read that it was needed so went with it.

I could see it possibly being an issue less tension on the spring more room meaning will not recoil as much and have as much force racking the next round.

Vfin, when you installed your prs without the buffer spring spacer, did you use the original carbine buffer or a rifle buffer? If you used the carbine buffer, it would be of interest if you updated in the future whether or not you have battery issues somewhere down the line.

I did not use the spacer with the Enidine 308 buffer, which is a rifle buffer. When compressed, the Enidine buffer is about .25" shorter than the DPMS rifle buffer. The variance in length between the compressed Enidine buffer and the carbine buffer is approximate to the length of the new spacer that S&W specifies to use when installing the MP10 carbine buffer/spring in the A2 style buffer extension tube.

On the subject of the buffer tube insert taking forever, there is an alternative that kills two birds with one purchase. If you buy the AR10 version of the J-P Captured Spring Buffer, they include a polymer buffer insert for the A1/A2 buffer tubes as part of the package - this also does away with that cheese grater spring noise some AR's are prone to. It's not cheap though...Brownell's has them in stock for $125.

That is a great alternative but the spacer is just 14$

Good point - has anyone measured the overall length of the S&W spacer? I was just wondering if the spacers that came with the J-P Captured Spring buffers I installed in my AR15's are the same length?

Waste not, want not, right?

Did a bit of digging in the archives and found the overall length of the spacer was 1.990 inches. The supplied spacer with my AR15 buffer was 2.656 inches...

So where is the difference made up or does it matter. almost an inch is a big deal. Ask my girlfriend

Pertaining to the JP Captured Spring/Buffer system as it might be used with a PRS stock on the MP10, I don't perceive the JP system's spacer to be an issue. The A2 rifle buffer extension tube stays the same length regardless, and the unit is designed to install in the A2 rifle buffer extension tube with the provided spacer. My concern would be the center guide rod on this system because it does not compress with the spring ... hence, if the back of the firing pin is within the 4-3/8" segment of the bolt carrier that protrudes into the extension tube during the firing cycle, the back of the firing pin will collide with the spring's guide rod and result in some sort of damage. This condition of clearance must be checked carefully prior to experimenting with the JP captured spring system in the MP10.

I have a silly question. I have all parts except the spacer which I'm still waiting on. Can I install everything and put in the spacer when it comes in or does the spacer get secured in the tube somehow during the install?

Spacer just drops in the end of the tube. You can install everything but the spring and buffer and drop them in when the spacer comes.

Yes like stated above you can just drop it in when it arrived. I just waited so i had a functioning rifle till the time came.

but when id does come in you could be ready in less than a second!

I did this mod to my M&P 10 over the weekend, with a factory spacer, and it worked like a champ. Thanks for sharing!
