Installing PRS on M&P10 (Detailed)

I just received my PRS stock and installed it tonight with the new A2 buffer and spring. I have not fired the weapon yet, hope there is no problems.

I got mine from the link you guys posted thank you I wouldn't of been able to find on that cheap. I installed it the other day and wow it is so nice being a longer guy with this stock on, it feels great. I'm still waiting on my spacer from smith I ordered 2 weeks ago they said there's a 2-4 week wait.. So I'm hanging tight, bout the start picking up some reloading supplies for the 308, so I can go play more. I apps want to pick up a QD sling mount from Troy and see if it works with the prs

I was just helping someone else with this topic.. Please make sure you get the AR10 PRS stock, if you get the ar15 version the charging handle will not fully extend and you will not be able to cycle. Also I got my spacer from S&W, it was a pain to reach someone as they were supper slammed, but the spacer was cheap and arrived in two weeks. In fact, my gun smith put everything together for me, and also found the spacer to be quite an easy, and ingenious fix to the rifle not cycling correctly. You can see my rifle and all its glory for sale in the Gunsforsale section of the forum .. ;D

you are correct and i tried to state that in the OP. why selling?

Why am I selling - my son is graduating here in a few months, then going off to boot camp for the Marines.. As a graduation present I am giving him my AR15, and because I love shooting my ar so much, I am selling my .308, going to use the money to buy a new ar, and a bolt action .308 (Remington 700).. Over all I want my son to have a nice rifle as he has worked very hard, money is tight at them moment and I cant afford to get an ar any other way. The M&P is in mint condition, and I just had it looked at by a gun smith monday, and he said with the work I put into the rifle, 1500 would be a VERY fair price, but because I know there are so many on here that like them and have helped me, I could sell it at 1400.

Buffer tube insert dimensions

S&W 6-8 weeks out I want to know the dimensions to have one made.

The spacer is almost 2" long. You can drop a piece of wood dowel or poly bar stock into the tube and use a quarter or metal washer for a spring seat.

Tried that and it is still short stroking, and stove piping. Turned my perfectly good gun into a bolt action. Any suggestions before I ship it to a qualified gun smith?

Just put the carbine stock back on and enjoy shooting until your gunsmith can have a look.

However, if you are familiar with the mechanics of the AR, go through the basics starting with a reasonable pre-fire inspection to determine if you are short stroking/stove piping from an impingement/blockage, gas leak, fast cycling or defective extractor. You might start by pulling the bolt all the way back with the charging handle and setting the bolt catch. If you can't hold the bolt with the bolt catch, shave 1/8" off the spacer until the bolt catch can be set. After that go to shooting range, load one (1) round into the magazine and fire. Charge the round into battery and fire. After this "last round in the magazine" is fired, the bolt should retract back into the buffer tube and stop on the bolt catch on its return forward. If this doesn't occur, you have some gas issues to further diagnose. If the bolt retracts, but doesn't extract the spent casing, there is a problem with the extractor.

Jones, thanks for the write up. I myself just purchased one a few weeks back. The current stock is too short for me and living in the People's republic of Ma, I cannot adjust it so I am considering a PRS stock. Now, my question, do I have to change the buffer tube for the longer rifle one no matter what? I don't have any AR tools myself so I would have to get some to do this job but I was just wondering.

Thanks in advance

Brand new to the forum, and I have to say you guys have lowered my stress by a ton. I installed a Magpul UBR stock and had all kinds of short stroking. I changed gas tube, gas block as I am running a Midwest Industry SS 15inch hand guard and though I may have had an issue with the low profile kit I installed. Now I just have to figure out which spring will run it if I am reading things right. I run a lot of AR-15 stuff, and while this MP-10 is similar in many ways, it has it's own list of parts that have a learning curve.
Thanks again everyone. Hopefully I can contribute something to make up for the range disgust I have been dealing with lately.

Welcome aboard Chris. I noticed you mentioned that you replaced your gas tube ... do you have any information on what you replaced it with? Only asking because a lot of are lead to believe that the M&P 10 requires a proprietary length gas tube.

Regarding the spring, you can use the original spring and buffer. You might need to create a spacer to do this. To figure out if you need a spacer, use a measuring tape to measure the internal length of the original extension tube and the internal length of the UBR's extension tube. If they are the same internal length, no spacer is needed. If the UBR extension tube is longer, you will need to create a spacer equal to the difference of the internal tube length of the original and the UBR.

Update: tried everything under the sun and no luck. Sent rifle to S&W see what they come up with.

S&W is not a reputable company

Just received my rifle back and due to the low profile block being replaced when I installed the free float handguard from Midwest they voided the warranty. What a joke considering that this is a ongoing problem with this rifle. That is why I bought a LWRC REPR. Should have known better.

Good news on all fronts. After trying out a couple different things, I have a working AR10 that is dead-nuts accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I will give a full breakdown and a few pics, just because they are worth a thousand words and I am not the worlds best typist.
I went through several different configurations before reaching a working gun. I started by adding a UBR stock with the stock carbine length spring and buffer. I also installed a Troy Hand guard, using a Troy gas block (.075) and a standard rifle length gas tube. I only used the new gas tube because as I had to drill the pin out the stock gas block as it was red Loctited for some reason. I went with an AAC muzzle brake also, to calm down recoil and I intend to get a can down the road. With this setup I had issues with short stroking on the first run and I honestly did not like the overall feel of the gun. Also the AAC brake made shooting almost unbearable as it felt like someone was hitting me in the head with a hammer on every shot, even with ear pro.

I then removed the UBR stock and put the stock buffer and stock on. The gun ran like a champ, so I knew the gas tube and block were fine. I went ahead and ordered a Magpul PRS stock. I cut down a piece of Delrin I had laying around to make the spacer and put everything together with the carbine spring and stock buffer. I also added a MI 15 inch handguard as I liked the look much better. I also swapped the AAC brake for their 3 prong flash hider. I then went to the range and ran through a magazine. Things ran well on the first mag, but as soon as I reloaded, I got the short stroking again. I should mention I was running both DPMS and Magpul 20 round magazines.

After the short stroking came back, I ordered a DPMS full length spring and made another trip to the range. I am happy to report that the rifle ran fine. I used both mags and fired at different rates of fire with no issues. I wasn't shooting for any kind of accuracy but was putting all shots into a head sized target at 300 yards with a garbage scope and no real effort. This gun is a keeper and will receive a better optic now that it has proved it can run with the best of them.

Can u please post a link to the spring you purchased after installing a fore end and low profile gas block my rifle started short stroking I'm hoping I can fix it easily using a different buffer spring.

It was just a standard DPMS 308 Buffer Spring, which I could not find on Amazon or Brownells, so I couldn't link it. I got mine from one of my wholesalers as I have my FFL. I am sure, without reading the fine print, that outside sellers are not allowed to hock their wares here, so PM me and I will get you pointed in the right direction.

Nevermind, found it: http://www.brownells.com/rifle-part...gs/buttstock-buffer-spring-std-prod42988.aspx
