So I was at the gun shop and after it was explained to me that the 15T has no delta-ring I asked how I get the quad-rail off. The sales person was taken aback and asked why I would ever want to do such a thing.

I responded by saying that I know of no other way to clean/oil the exterior of the barrel. He asked why I would want to do that.

"To prevent rust" I say. He says that would only be a problem in a really wet or humid environment.

I then pointed out that he just described the state in which we live...Mississippi. He kinds of stares blankly and says "well...yeah..."

I dropped the issue at that point and determined to figure it out on my own after I got the gun home.

A quick look in the owners manual showed me that a single hex-head bolt holds the bottom portion of the quad-rail on. I take that bolt out, slide the bottom quad-section forward, and BINGO...it comes right off and I can access the barrel.

I had seen a lot of discussions online where people are taking the barrel nut off so they can remove the whole quad-rail just to clean the barrel. Is that the procedure you have to use on older guns? Or are those folks just overlooking the hex-head bolt that takes the bottom portion off?

Great Post, I dont have a "T" and living in a very arid place I dont have the same problem but thank you very much.

I have an OR with a YHM free float quad rail added. It threads onto the barrel nut, and is held in place by two screws.

I haven't removed mine because the OR gas block with the rail would have to be removed.

Tonight I broke it down further. I removed the bottom rail with the single chrome allen screw...then I undid the 4 remaining allen screws that flank it...and the rest of the quad rail came off easy as pie. I can clean and oil the exterior of the barrel with maybe two minutes worth of work.

Time to go back to the gun store and 'splain some things to them.

Stu just like you I go rust really whats that LOL, I have an 84 Dodge 4wd Pickup that still doesnt have rust on it and they always rust. No disrespect Stainless I am just glad I dont have to deal with it.

None taken. Many days the humidity here is so bad that when I walk the 10 feet from my garage to my truck I'm already sweating. Sunglasses fog up immediately when you walk out of an air conditioned building into the parking lot.

If you do anything outdoors here you have to take a shower when you're done...it's not uncommon to have to shower three times a day.

It's unreal.

This doesn't really have to do with the 15T, but it's about removing hand guards and i decided it didn't warrant a new thread (I've created enough in the past few weeks thanks to my new-toy induced fervor).

Is there any handy little trick to getting a D ring depressed enough to remove a guard without buying the actual tool? I know it's somewhat cheap (i think i saw it at cabela's for fifteen bucks), but why waste the money when i have so many other things that i want!

That being said, i was able to get the stock one off of my OR with a little help from my girlfriend and got a cheap quad rail for now. I also got a new CMMG .22lr upper though, and i want to put the s&w hand guard onto it because they really hit a home run on a good fit compared to the CMMG stock guard.

LbulletM, for me it was just a good firm grasp and start with the bottom half of the handguard. I never did buy the tool and in the old days in the corps they didnt issue us one either. You just pulled hard and removed the bottom one first.

Yep...I think of those days every time I have to take that dag blasted thing off. I usually think "dang...I was a lot stronger back then!"

Haha alright, fair enough. Maybe my hand just needed a break after fighting with the first one. I'll have to give it another try!

Sometimes until you have removed it from your rifle a few times it is good to have help, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Yep...I just rock one side down and slip the end of the hand guard out. Then heave on the other side until I can get it out. One at a time is what you're shooting for.

Thanks for the advice guys. I was trying to pull down the entire ring at once. I'll definitely try the one half at a time.

Thanks for the info as you can see in my avatar this will come in handy !! I live in Missouri , very humid here too ......yuk!

Just to let you guys know, I got it! I did the one side at a time thing. I won't say it was easy, but it worked! The one from the smith and wesson is just so much better than the one that came on the cmmg upper.
