First, Welcome to the forum! :D Next, let me ask why you want to change the BCG, is there a problem with the one from Smith? It's your rifle, so do what you want, just curious.

That aside, no, you shouldn't have to change anything else.

Good Luck and good shooting. :D

Beat me to it. I was wondering the same thing.

Nothing else to change, just make sure you check the headspace with the new BCG.

^ Bingo.

I swapped out the factory BCG on my 15-Sport for a FailZero NiBx BCG. When checking headspace on a installed barrel, you have to remove the extractor and ejector from the bolt or you'll get inaccurate readings from the headspace gauges.

I bet the OP wants a bolt that is confirmed "milspec" full auto bolt with all the tests and treatments: HPI, MPT, Shot Peen, Grade 8 fasteners, Carpenter Steel, etc.. etc.. etc..

OP, if you're going to go through the trouble of checking headspace might as well make it worthwhile. Get yourself a NiBx Full-Auto BCG. :)

Since we're on the subject, has anyone had their stock BCG fail?

Nice segway back into the rabbit hole... :)

Nope. The only reason I swapped mine was because I wanted to try a NiBx BCG for myself and see whether or not all the claims were true or hype first hand.

And? The answer is?

It works as advertised. Even with the NiBx treatment, I was worried about running the NiBx BCG dry. I degreased the upper receiver. The only lube was a thin coat on the top of the charging handle. I fired 250 of my reloads that use CFE223 propellant.

It worked as advertised. No FT-Feed, FT-Fire, FT-Eject. Cleanup is a breeze. Field strip the BCG and wipe it down with a rag. Fouling rubs right off the NiBx treated parts. I could make it easier by suing a solvent moistened rag. No lube = nothing to attract fouling.

The FailZero NiBx BCG is pricy. IMO, practical value is really in a NiBx bolt. The bolt is the part that really gets fouled. Put a NiBx bolt into a standard carrier and you've got a winner at a lower cost.

OK, John, inquiring minds want to know.

WOW, I'm just to slow.

No problems with S&W carrier just like to upgrade what is considered a critical part of the weapon. Thanks for the quick replies Learning a lot on this forum ShooterJD

Sorry, but I fail to see how this is an "upgrade". Is it different? Of course, but I just don't see "better". Calling it an upgrade, to me, would be like calling a change from a Bently to a Rolls Royce or vice versa an upgrade. No...just different.

Change can be good especially with an AR...just put a black nitride BCG in my Sport. Why? Cuz I wanted to! Gives the same S&W dependability only for $130 more...such a deal.

You make my point..."Gives the same S&W dependability...$130 more".

You paid $130 to get...the same thing...

Agreed, you're not getting more dependability as the BCGs on S&W ARs aren't known for being undependable. Nothing wrong with switching out a part if that's your preference, but to do so thinking you're getting something in return for doing it, when you're really not, is worth pointing out.

That is exactly my point, I have sixteen AR's....each one different because that is the way I want them. Although the Sport was accurate, well balanced and totally reliable out of the box I have changed it to meet my needs so don't be confused it was my money. The OP wants to make changes to his rifle, if he (and same for me) wishes to change it back it takes little effort, well shooting with one bolt and then going back to the old one might not be such a good idea...but you get my drift. As for spending the money on more ammo.....I have my shooting needs (including rimfire) met for many years to come.

AIM sells some good quality BCG's, Spikes, BCM, DD, Rainier Arms all sell quality products as well............I would shop around, you can find stuff on sale all the time and keep your M&P BCG as a back up, or run it into the ground then change it. Just a guess, but by the time you need to replace your BCG, your barrel would be something that might need replacing as well?
