I just picked up a new m&p 15 sport and was wondering if anyone knows what coating if any the barrel has? I know its a newer one with a 1 in 9 twist. Thank you.

Should be Melonite, or thew same thing under another name. Supposedly better than chrome.

The barrel isn't coated. The barrel is given a hot salt bath nitriding treatment. Think Melonite/Tennifer. The hot salt bath nitriding process alters the metal, imparting hardness, heat resistance, and wear resistance similar to chrome lining, at a depth greater than a layer of chrome lining.

For the average civilian rifle used for common range work the difference between chrome, unlined, melonite, is negligible. For the very skilled civilian marksman, there are differences to be eked out. The differences are:

Chrome lined: Additional material is added to the chamber and bore of the rifle. This can negatively affect the rifle's potential for accuracy. The trade-off is enhanced wear, heat, corrosion resistance.

Non lined: No material is added to the chamber and bore. This gives a non-lined barrel a greater potential for accuracy. The trade off is barrel life.

Melonite/Tennifer : No material is added to the chamber and bore. The hot salt bath nitriding process imparts similar properties to chrome lining. Win-Win.

I own semi-auto rifles with all three barrel treatments. With my marksmanship skill level and the ranges I am able to shoot regularly, I've not seen any practical difference between the three evidenced by shots on target.

Have you found Melonite to be any easier to clean after firing?

Honestly, I don't notice a difference between any of the three. If you've visited my cleaning thread sticky, you know I'm a cleaning nut. I used to be more OCD than I am now.

Cleaning Barrel = dry patch, wet patch, dwell time, wet patch, wet brush, dry patches, end with a lubed patch.

Cleaning Chamber = Chamber brush, swab out.

It's the same pattern, same amount of patches, no matter what. What makes a difference in cleaning is a Nickel Boron treated Bolt Carrier Group. It just wipes clean. If you have a standard phosphate coated BCG, then the CAT M4 tool makes cleaning easy.

The gas tube keeps itself clean. The hot gasses burn off any carbon deposits.

If you want an easier cleaning barrel, use Dyna-Tek Bore Coat. It works as advertised, but you really have to have the barrel cleaned before use. Otherwise, it doesn't take.

Google it for reviews.
