What are the main differences between these two models? The TS has magpul hardware I realize where the VTAC has VTAC and VLTOR hardware and other goodies and a better trigger. Other than that, what else is different that justifies a $400 premium over the other?

I am new to the rifle world and don't know much. I am likely going to go with the TS model, but beforehand wanted to compare it to the VT since it appears as those these are the two cadillac models that M&P makes. I am also going to get a 15-22, likely the new MOE SL version to compliment the 15.

Thanks guys.

The TS is a carbine length gas system vs. the mid-length gas system of the VTAC.

The VTAC is longer and a bit heavier.

The VTAC comes with a sling and, I believe, a dedicated flashlight mount.

The TS comes with two 2" rail sections which are fine for mounting a light.

You can see which one I opted for in my signature below. ;)

Cool man, love it.

I am sticking with the TS, my original plan. I can buy a sling and a flashlight to mount to it.

What are your recommendations for a flashlight, scope, and red dot? Also, are they all interchangeable with the MOE SL version of the sport 15-22?

You're in luck. A friend and neighbor of mine is a local deputy and decided to purchase a TS after getting a chance to see and handle mine. (He currently owns a Sig.)

I made up a list for him of the items I added to mine based upon the excellent recommendations I have received from other members here backed up by my own research.

I don't own the M&P15-22 but if it is equipped with a Picatinny rail the rail mounted options should be suitable for either rifle.

Nice. Yeah, its got the M Loc system so it is compatible with Picatinny accessories.

Thanks for the nice list and time to post it. I really appreciate it.

Depending on how much you want to spend on a light, you could get a TLR-1 or an X300 Ultra and mount them at 12:00, you could also get one of the Surefire Scouts and a pressure switch. Having the light at 12:00 is my preference.

For dots, if you don't want to spend $700 on a T1 / T2 your can also look at the Aimpoint PRO, for $425 or so it is the best value in red dot optics.

For slings I would take a loot at the Tactical Link slings, they are by far my favorite sling. I put QD endplates on all my ARs but if you are not comfortable removing the buffer tube Tactical Link makes a QD adapter that mounts onto the buffer tube, some company also makes a cheap plastic one that you could put on the .22 trainer.

If you don't want to shell out a couple of hundred for a dot, the Primary Arms Micro Dot is a great red dot for home use and SD for right around $100. It's well regarded around these parts, love mine.

For a light I've been looking at the Surefire M300 Scout with Throntail mount.

I've got a 9in handguaurd. My support hand extends to the end which leaves no room for a light. The Thorntail extends the M300 beyond the handguard (or in more if you like). The offset design keeps it tucked in close and puts the tailcap switch where my thumb is. Impact Weapons Components sells the combo for $269. They also have other lights and mounting solutions. Great AR candy store. :)
