I'm thinking of getting this for my MP15:
[ame]https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01B2FI3VY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1[/ame]

I'll mostly be using it at an indoor range thats 25 yards and occasionally if hell doesn't freeze over here in PA when it gets nicer go to some outdoor ranges that go out to 100 yards (still looking for ranges to go beyond that).

Personally, I want to keep the iron sights since I prefer them. but I take my friends with me to shoot most of the time and was going to use the scope (maybe even the laser) to help them get on target a bit easier. So I'm assuming a 1" riser would raise the scope high enough and let me use iron sights if I want to right?

Also, anyone modify their front site so you can distinguish the middle sight from the sides....I was thinking of putting glow on stuff on the front sight to make it easier. I found that last time at the range I was mistaking the side of the front sight for the middle.

You'd be better off taking the $40 they want for that "optic" and buying lottery tickets.

All it takes to differentiate the front sight post from the sight wings is a bit of practice.

It’s called co-witnessing. You get a riser that puts the red dot in line with tip of the front sightpost. That way if your battery dies, you still have usable sights.

You can't "co-witness" iron sights with a magnified optic... doesn't work that way.

I agree with MistWolf. Wouldn't waste my money on that optic.

Buying merchandise is like buying oats. The oats that have been through the horse are cheaper. Don't expect that scope to hold zero for very long, if at all. Also, the optics are so cheap, don't expect to see anything in dim light.

So would guys recommend a red dot instead of that sight? I have a red dot on my MP1522 and Sig Saug 522 that works great. When I have my friends at the range with me I can just tell them to put the dot on the target and squeeze the trigger. I figured I'd get a scope for the Mp15 so they can see the targets at 25 and 100 a little easier.

So any recommendations for a red dot or sight that works well with the MP15 and would let me still use the iron sights if needed?

If you want to be able to use the sights without removing the optic, a non-magnified optic, like a red dot, is the only way to go. Judging from the last optic you asked about, I would say that a Bushnell TRS-25 would meet your needs. They have 2 models, one with a riser, and one without. The one with the riser will provide lower 1/3 co-witness (if memory serves). The model without the riser will require you to purchase a riser separately, but allows you to choose absolute or lower 1/3 co-witness, depending on riser height.

If you want a magnified optic, then the option would be to purchase a quick disconnect mount that will allow you to remove the optic for using irons without losing zero. However, a quality QD mount that works as advertised is not cheap.

Thanks guys.....since I'm only an occasional shooter, and mostly indoors, I'm trying to keep the costs down for the optics on this one. I have higher calibers that have much better optics because I eventually want to be able to shoot beyond 100 yards (still looking for a long range near me).

Found this:
[ame]https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HICPHW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1[/ame]

Checked out a couple reviews on it and it seems to fit the bill well. Its got a disconnect and I can keep it on for my friends and remove it for when I want to shoot iron sights.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I would definitely recommend a red dot over that scope. A very good inexpensive red dot is the Bushnell TRS-25 or one of the Primary Arms red dots.

If you really want a cheap magnifying scope, at least go with the UTG Bugbuster.

I have the TRS-25 on my Beretta CX4 and love it. I got it sighted for 15 yards (usual distance my friends shoot at), plus I can see the sights without issue.

Will look at Bugbuster as well....thanks.

FWIW, I run both a scope and red dot interchangeably on my 15-22 ( and a couple of other rifles).

I leave a quick detach riser attached to each optic which allows me to swap back in forth (or to iron sights) in 60 seconds or so as the need dictates. All I have to do is make sure the riser goes back in the same (marked) slot and it's plenty accurate for plinking out to 100 yds or so.
Both NStar and UTG make a decent one that will work for your stated purpose for about $18.

Spiderpig, if you cannot afford at least $200 to set up an optic, buy ammo instead. There's no reason you cannot shoot 100 yards with iron sights. Shooting with irons will make you a better shot. Shooting with cheap optics will take you backwards.
