I read on another board a statement regarding a 40 S&W rounds accuracy. My question is, What grain round have you found to be most accurate? I normally shoot either 165 grain or 180 grain in my Sigma and have not noticed any appreciable difference in accuracy, however this is my first 40 cal pistol. I know there are other weights out there, so based on your experience, what size and type round have you found most accurate?

To many variables, what shoots best in your gun may not in the next one off the line. The 40 design is based on a 180gr bullet and most guns are set to shoot POA with that weight. But that doesn't mean it's going to be the most accurate out of the gun. You might find that one brand of ammo in a certain weight might be better than others.

That's basically what I figured also, I was just wondering based on everyones experience if one round was inherently more accurate than the rest. I was curious if anyone's found the lighter weights are more accurate and I'm missing something.

I just tried some Fiocchi 170gr fmj at 7 and 15 yards with very good results. Consistent head shots on a zombie target.

I use the 180gr because that's what I shoot in competition (easier to make major power).
Otherwise, I would probably shoot the 165gr for plinking and defense. With equal quality bullets, I've never noticed much practical difference in accuracy. The 180gr has a definite advantage knocking down the large steel poppers.

I shot some Magtech 155gr JHP today in my SW40VE, and lost a great deal of accuracy over the 180 gr Federal Champion FMJ and the Remington UMC 180gr JHP that I was also shooting. Was much louder and very noticeable jump in recoil as well, thought at first I might have bought some +P ammo but it didn't note any such thing on the box. Had some feed problems with it as well, all I could figure out was maybe because it was longer than the Remington. I will stick with the Federal for target and the Remington for carry.

I shoot both the 165 and 180 winchester fmj with great results from both. I would think the 180 would be a better round for defense. Isn't bigger better?
