Can someone post picks of the differences between the two? Being new to S&W semi-autos and starting with M&P's, I just discovered the SD9 and want to know more about it. How different is the design. Sear and trigger design-wise.

Thanks.

The S & W website has a comparison feature you can use.

As for the differences, the triggers are completely different.

The current SD9/40VE models have stainless slides and plastic sights. The original SD9/40 models had melonite slides with metal M&P rear sights and Trijicon front night sights.

The SD's are about the same size as the Glock 19/23, while the M&P 9/40 models have longer grips and capacities similar to the Glock 17/22's.

The SD's are probably one of the best values out there if you want a semi-auto pistols. The most important thing to be aware of is the "self-defense" trigger, which Smith has designed to be very hard to shoot by accident. My advice is to try one before buying. M&P's, on the other hand, tend to have better than average striker fired triggers.

And the SD is lighter in weight and shorter in length.

The exact reason I got the SD9VE rather than an M&P. I wanted more of a full size gun as my CCW and my instructor told me the obvious: large guns are harder to conceal, and the surprising: some states have limits on lengths for concealed weapons. For the price, I could not justify spending the extra money for a M&P or a Glock with the SD9 or SD40 were priced at $320.

Of course, I was concerned about size because I was going to carry it. The M&P was probably the most comfortable guns I have ever shot. The grip feels great, the trigger was great, I also thought it looked pretty darn awesome. The SD9VE is obviously a cheaper gun. VE meaning Value Enhanced, so it is not going to have that same build quality or the high quality parts as the M&P. The trigger takes getting used to because it is "long" but there are kits from Apex that will make it more like the M&P as far as required force.

What's better:
Grip: SD and M&P are both great, slight advantage to M&P
Trigger (without mods): M&P
Length: M&P is longer
Price: SD is much cheaper
To Carry: SD
Accessories: More M&P accessories available as far as sights, laser and flashlight mounts but companies are starting to accommodate the SD's more and more.

Thanks guys. I take it the sear blocks and trigger mechanisms are completely different as well.

You have to watch or specify what model your talking about.

There is an SD9 which is different than the current model SD9VE.

Just like M&P'S there's a lot of different models of them too.

Thanks, 3

I was curious about SD9 and SD9VE... And how different they were to the M&P. I'm good now. Thanks -all- for the help.

I would have bought a SD40 instead of the SD40VE if I could have found one.

Gotcha Atticaz, just making sure .
