Hello,

Was cleaning my Sigma 40F this morning (bought new in 1994) and noticed a big crack right down the middle, frame, lower front. First, I've never had any guide rod in it other than the original and second, I've never shot a hot or + round out of it.

Any thoughts (experience) on Smith & Wesson replacing or warranty honoring? There are no mods to the frame .... EXCEPT I stipled it (grip only, furthest you could possibly be from the crack on same pistol) ... and (rolling my eyes) .... betting S&W gets whacky about the stipling and warranty ???

What do you all think?

Thanks

My guess is S&W would have honored the warranty had you not stippled the frame. It would still be worth a call to S&W to find out as you might get an SD as a replacement. Just tell them you need a label for a warranty return due to a cracked frame and see what happens.

I'd still go with trying S&W. The crack is in dust cover, not in
any part of the grip area, right?

If they say no, I'd try plastic welding it with black zipties. Sounds wacky,
but they're Nylon 66 (without glass reinforcement), so it will cross-link
with the frame polymer.

Crack is here ... at very end, frame, right where muzzle would be directly above. And wouldn't you know it, seeing a close up with the pic, it actually looks like more cracking running down the middle? I got a return label from S&W today. Yes, the stipling is on handle only.

That's interesting...

There are also cracks at the left & right forward edges of the serial
number inlay...

This was one of S&W's early forays into polymer frames and the
gun's around thirty years old. Hmmm....

Might just have to drag my SD40F out, and take a look.

I checked my SW40F (correct nomenclature), all's intact around the
data plate.

Still think it could be a "growing pain" problem for S&W's first polymer
frame, something they might make-good on, without any questions...

Nice they stood behind it rather than throw it under a bus and inform you that you're SOL and here's your broken gun back.

Y'all got me paranoid. I pulled out my SW40F and SW40V and verified they do not have cracks in the frame. :)

Has that happened to you?

My experience from S&W warranty service was sending a 3rd gen in because the hammer was following the slide into battery when firing or releasing the slide and cracked grips under recall. The net result was waiting three months for them to send it back with the exact same problem and the grips swapped out for decocker model grips on a non-decocker model. Wound up fixing it myself by fitting a new sear release arm and installing an new sear spring and replacing them with proper factory grips from Ebay.

My other warranty issue was unrelated to S&W, it was with Rhino Liners. Supposed lifetime warranty on the lining detaching from the truck bed. It did, I had the receipt showing I was the original owner and it was installed by one of their shops. Nope, not gonna warranty it. Its been over ten years and thats our definition of lifetime. So yes, this has happened to me.

Kudos to S&W for good customer service. That is why I only buy from companies like S&W, Ruger S.A., etc. I've bought a Turkish pistol before, had a problem, "sorry, we don't have any parts". No more of that for me.

There are a host of guns they don't warranty anymore because they no longer produce the guns or parts. I don't think any 3rd gen autos are covered anymore.

I'm a little surprised they honored the warranty on the Sigma, but they do still produce a like model.

I have sent in 3rd generation in last 1.5 years and they honored it.
