Saw where Clark customs offers the hard chrome for the M41. Any one out there ever have their model 41 hard chromed , and if so , how do you like it ?

I had a S&W model 28 duty gun that I had hard chromed in the 70's. Florida weather is hard on big guys and sweaty arms and hands leave rust on a duty gun even when wiped down every day. The hard-chrome finish looked like stainless steel and resisted rust completely. In my experience, hard chrome is a very durable finish. It doesn't wear or flake off like nickel. For a target gun, I don't see any advantage, but it looks cool.

"Silk Shot" - Nickel/Teflon® (Formerly Nichromold Plus)

"Silk Shot" is the absolute best Nickel/Teflon® plating (Formerly Nichromold Plus) that I have found for my
slides, barrels, guide rods, slide stops and internals (you name it) coated with.
Power residue/carbon/lead fouling just wipes off.

A friend of mine has been an employee there for more than 12 years, and they are gun friendly.

This is from their web site:
"Accelerated salt water testing at the U.S. Naval Testing Laboratories showed no evidence
of corrosive effects after the equivalent of 66 weeks immersed in salt water."

This is the plating that Ruger uses on the cylinder, trigger and the internal parts that you can't see in the "LCP".

There is also a high end custom gun shop in Connecticut that uses this plating on there hand fitted 1911's and AR's.

I am not affiliated with this company, just passing on great information IMO.

I have an "A" prefix gun 7" bbl. that I bought used that was HC. I like it and the frame looks cool with a Bully Barrel.

Tom:

I find the very small, very stiff thumb safety of my Model 41 to be a problem for a field gun. It really slows down the first shot. Have you done anything to yours to help with that?

If someone made a "speed safety" for the model 41 that had a larger "platform" or pad for the thumb, I would buy one in a heartbeat.

The 41 and 46 have the same safety (finish different). Basically a little fitting and polishing can help ease operation. There was supposedly a larger safety offered as aftermarket, but I have never seen one. If Larry is still visiting this site, maybe he will chime in??

How does this compare to NP3?

I've had problems with the 41 safety as well. Mine is kinda hard to completely disengage. It will appear to be down and yet I have to give it a little more umph to hear & feel it click off. It's definitely not like a 1911, or any other gun that I have. I wonder if this problem with the safety is as common on the newer "red dot" safety guns. On the newer guns the safety doesn't recess and hook into the slide like the old ones. I actually sent my gun back to S&W for this and they sent it back saying that that's just how the older guns pre "red dot safety" are. If you try and get it too loose this will happen: GunTalk-Online.com :: View topic - mod 41 safety

The thing about the safety as noted by johngalt is that they are seldom used, so people over the years have not insisted that S&W design a better one.

Old 41s tend to lose the blue where your fingers and the web of your hand touches. The slide and barrel seems to hold up well. I have seen one hard chromed pistol, the slide was still blue. It looked OK, but unless you carry it like Tom does, I am not sure why it's necessary.

I suppose that if I felt the need I would just re-blue, At least my old 41s would not require much polishing if any so re-blue would restore it close to original.
